Stage 2 of the Tour de France takes us into Saint Brieuc on a 186km stage. We get 2 category 2 climbs along the way to give us a mountain jersey leader but other than that it should mostly be smooth sailing with a sprint strongly tipped. The ending isn’t completely straightforward, however, with a moment of steep climbing before a bit of a drag to the finish line. Could this hurt some of those who need pan-flat rides? Not only that but the wind could well be a factor – it is blowing very heavily today with cross-winds shifting back and forth as we trace the countryside.
So of course with the opening day of the race we get a large number of riders looking to get into the break. The attacking riders are:
Oliver Kaisen
Nick Kinney
Benoit Vaugrenard
Michael Faerk Christensen
Jan Ghyselinck
Lucas Schadlich
Sep Vanmarcke
Timothy Vangheel
Ruben Zepunkte
Brent Bookwalter
Kristjan Koren
Anders Lund
Andre Steensen
Aidis Kruopis
Dimitri Champion
Of course not everyone can get away and from these the following form the break of the day:
Benoit Vaugrenard
[https://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png[/IMG] Brent Bookwalter
Kristjan Koren
Anders Lund
Andre Steensen
Aidis Kruopis
Remember that Vaugrenard won a stage of the Tour in 2011, so he is certainly a dangerous sort of rider to get away. There are some teams, particularly the two wildcard teams, who will be disappointed to have missed out here. Regardless with this sort of stage, particularly so early in the Tour, some of the teams will be looking to set this up for a sprint.
And of course it is those teams who are working on the front. Puma did a lot of the earlier pace setting then calmed down once the break got away. Pendleton’s are here to defend their yellow jersey while Festina and Pokerstars are working for their sprinters. Vesuvio is up the front as well, clearly trying to keep Andy Schleck well placed and out of trouble during these nervous early days.
The lead goes out to a maximum of about 6 minutes and starts to slowly decrease, but the break still have a chance to make today interesting with the two fourth category climbs. Each awards points as follows: 5-3-1. However, curiously, no one is interested at the first climb and so Lund leads over with [https://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png[/IMG] Bookwalter in second and Kruopis taking the single point for third.
Remarkably, the same lack of interest is shown at the second mountain climb. Maybe the wind is discouraging attacks? Either way Kruopis leads over this time with Steensen and Vaugrenard right behind him. This means that Kruopis will wear the mountain jersey tonight. With about 80km remaining the gap is already down to 3’52” and it is steadily dropping.
An intermediate sprint follows soon after this and it is much more likely – the bonus seconds on offer may allow some of these riders to sneak their way up the standings. Koren proves to have the strongest sprint, followed by Steensen and then Vaugrenard. This puts Koren 20” down and Steensen 19”.
Looking back at the bunch it is now just Pendleton’s doing the work. The dedicated workhorses today are:
Ivan Mauricio Casas
Philip Deignan
Carlos Oyarzun
Peter Kennaugh
Matthieu Ladagnous
They get the gap to under 2 minutes with 50km still remaining – they are not taking any chances today with Bradley Wiggins in yellow. Remember that finishing position amongst their team could affect who will wear the jersey tonight, as they are all on the same time. Seeing the gap so low, with about 25km remaining Koren decides that he has to go alone.
Steensen desperately tries to follow but he can’t keep up with the big rouleur and so he drifts back. The bunch swallow up the rest of the break but Koren is riding well - very well, in fact, as he extends his lead slightly. With 18km remaining he still has a minute.
But alas, it is not to be as Koren is caught by the charging Festina and Puma led peloton.
The fast pace, combined with the high wind, has finally taken its toll and with just under 10km remaining lots of gaps are starting to open up, with dozens of riders falling off the back. No leaders are there yet, but they will have to be careful.
The first train is set up with Pokerstars straight up against the left barriers. The line is:
Van Goolen
Dupont
Dumoulin
Mohs
Ciolek
Van Heerden
The road drops down quickly to take us to the quick little rise which will conclude the stage. Dumoulin is now the only man ahead of Mohs! Meanwhile Puma have got themselves organised and are looking for a way through. Their train is:
Gasparotto
Kvist
Bennati
And with 2km to go we crest that climb and Mohs is forced to go already! This is a disastrous lead-out! But he isn’t the only one with trouble, as Gasparotto drops Kvist and Bennati. Van Heerden and Ciolek are well placed and Ponzi has found his way up too!
Realising his mistake, Gasparotto stops pedalling and drifts backwards. But good news for his team as Kvist puts in a mighty effort to find space for Bennati on the right, overtaking Ponzi and coming up near the front.
There are still 1500 metres to the line and Mohs is already fading. Van Heerden comes past him with Ciolek in his wheel. But on his right Kvist is pulling Bennati through! Granjel Cabrera has also come from a fair way back to be competitive on the left, and Van Avermaet is there with him.
Kvist is still working under the kite, earning every cent of his pay. Ponzi hits the front, while Van Heerden appears to be hurting as well.
And with 700 metres remaining Bennati comes around and surges up to Ponzi. Speaking of surges, Vanderbiest has come from nowhere and is moving very quickly. Guerao is right in his wheel too and looks to be fighting hard.
As those at the front start to fade, Bennati just keeps powering on, opening up a bike length.
And just like that Daniele Bennati wins his 5th Tour de France stage victory and his 6th victory of the season. He made it look easy but he really does owe Thomas Vedel Kvist a lot for that one.
Those around Bennati faded but Guerao managed to grab a great second place. If he had been placed better who knows what might have happened? Granjel Cabrera holds on for this, which is a result he will be happy with. Vanderbiest in fourth shows that holding your sprint until the last second was key today. Van Avermaet provides a bit of a pleasant surprise in fifth. Gasparotto holds his remarkably long sprint for sixth. Ponzi faded to seventh, but will be encouraged by that showing. Goss could only manage an anonymous eighth, while Lavoine and a surprising Pedraza round out the top ten.
77 riders lost contact today but no big names are there, luckily. It does, however, mean that Pendleton’s are reduced to just four riders at the top. And on that note we have a new yellow jersey wearer – Thomas Faiers becomes the second British rider in two days to wear the coveted jersey! He actually has a better chance of holding onto it in the coming week than Bradley Wiggins anyway. Aidis Kruopis takes the mountain jersey, even if he did little to deserve it. Daniele Bennati obviously takes over our first points jersey and he will be glad for the chance to get an early lead there. Finally, Simply Red Bull lost more than 7 minutes today in the team competition, so are also well on their way to the wooden spoon there.
