Tour de France - Stage 2
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-1.jpg

Stage 2 of the Tour de France takes us into Saint Brieuc on a 186km stage. We get 2 category 2 climbs along the way to give us a mountain jersey leader but other than that it should mostly be smooth sailing with a sprint strongly tipped. The ending isn’t completely straightforward, however, with a moment of steep climbing before a bit of a drag to the finish line. Could this hurt some of those who need pan-flat rides? Not only that but the wind could well be a factor – it is blowing very heavily today with cross-winds shifting back and forth as we trace the countryside.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-2.jpg

So of course with the opening day of the race we get a large number of riders looking to get into the break. The attacking riders are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Oliver Kaisen

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Kristjan Koren
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Anders Lund

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Dimitri Champion

Of course not everyone can get away and from these the following form the break of the day:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Benoit Vaugrenard
[https://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png[/IMG] Brent Bookwalter
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Kristjan Koren
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Anders Lund
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Andre Steensen
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Aidis Kruopis

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-3.jpg

Remember that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Vaugrenard won a stage of the Tour in 2011, so he is certainly a dangerous sort of rider to get away. There are some teams, particularly the two wildcard teams, who will be disappointed to have missed out here. Regardless with this sort of stage, particularly so early in the Tour, some of the teams will be looking to set this up for a sprint.

And of course it is those teams who are working on the front. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Puma did a lot of the earlier pace setting then calmed down once the break got away. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Pendleton’s are here to defend their yellow jersey while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Festina and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars are working for their sprinters. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Vesuvio is up the front as well, clearly trying to keep i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Andy Schleck well placed and out of trouble during these nervous early days.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-4.jpg

The lead goes out to a maximum of about 6 minutes and starts to slowly decrease, but the break still have a chance to make today interesting with the two fourth category climbs. Each awards points as follows: 5-3-1. However, curiously, no one is interested at the first climb and so i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Lund leads over with [https://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png[/IMG] Bookwalter in second and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Kruopis taking the single point for third.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-5.jpg

Remarkably, the same lack of interest is shown at the second mountain climb. Maybe the wind is discouraging attacks? Either way i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Kruopis leads over this time with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Steensen and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Vaugrenard right behind him. This means that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Kruopis will wear the mountain jersey tonight. With about 80km remaining the gap is already down to 3’52” and it is steadily dropping.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-6.jpg

An intermediate sprint follows soon after this and it is much more likely – the bonus seconds on offer may allow some of these riders to sneak their way up the standings. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Koren proves to have the strongest sprint, followed by i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Steensen and then i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Vaugrenard. This puts i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Koren 20” down and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Steensen 19”.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-7.jpg

Looking back at the bunch it is now just Pendleton’s doing the work. The dedicated workhorses today are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Ivan Mauricio Casas
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Philip Deignan
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Carlos Oyarzun
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Peter Kennaugh
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Matthieu Ladagnous

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-8.jpg

They get the gap to under 2 minutes with 50km still remaining – they are not taking any chances today with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Bradley Wiggins in yellow. Remember that finishing position amongst their team could affect who will wear the jersey tonight, as they are all on the same time. Seeing the gap so low, with about 25km remaining i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Koren decides that he has to go alone.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-9.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Steensen desperately tries to follow but he can’t keep up with the big rouleur and so he drifts back. The bunch swallow up the rest of the break but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Koren is riding well - very well, in fact, as he extends his lead slightly. With 18km remaining he still has a minute.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-10.jpg

But alas, it is not to be as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Koren is caught by the charging i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Festina and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Puma led peloton.

The fast pace, combined with the high wind, has finally taken its toll and with just under 10km remaining lots of gaps are starting to open up, with dozens of riders falling off the back. No leaders are there yet, but they will have to be careful.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-11.jpg

The first train is set up with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars straight up against the left barriers. The line is:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Van Goolen
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dupont
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dumoulin
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Ciolek
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-12.jpg

The road drops down quickly to take us to the quick little rise which will conclude the stage. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dumoulin is now the only man ahead of i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs! Meanwhile i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Puma have got themselves organised and are looking for a way through. Their train is:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Gasparotto
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kvist
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-13.jpg

And with 2km to go we crest that climb and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs is forced to go already! This is a disastrous lead-out! But he isn’t the only one with trouble, as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Gasparotto drops i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kvist and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Ciolek are well placed and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi has found his way up too!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-14.jpg

Realising his mistake, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Gasparotto stops pedalling and drifts backwards. But good news for his team as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kvist puts in a mighty effort to find space for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati on the right, overtaking i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi and coming up near the front.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-15.jpg

There are still 1500 metres to the line and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs is already fading. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden comes past him with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Ciolek in his wheel. But on his right i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kvist is pulling i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati through! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Granjel Cabrera has also come from a fair way back to be competitive on the left, and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Van Avermaet is there with him.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-16.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kvist is still working under the kite, earning every cent of his pay. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi hits the front, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden appears to be hurting as well.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-17.jpg

And with 700 metres remaining i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati comes around and surges up to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi. Speaking of surges, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Vanderbiest has come from nowhere and is moving very quickly. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao is right in his wheel too and looks to be fighting hard.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-18.jpg

As those at the front start to fade, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati just keeps powering on, opening up a bike length.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-19.jpg

And just like that i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Daniele Bennati wins his 5th Tour de France stage victory and his 6th victory of the season. He made it look easy but he really does owe i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Thomas Vedel Kvist a lot for that one.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF2-20.jpg

Those around i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati faded but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao managed to grab a great second place. If he had been placed better who knows what might have happened? i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Granjel Cabrera holds on for this, which is a result he will be happy with. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Vanderbiest in fourth shows that holding your sprint until the last second was key today. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Van Avermaet provides a bit of a pleasant surprise in fifth. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Gasparotto holds his remarkably long sprint for sixth. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi faded to seventh, but will be encouraged by that showing. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss could only manage an anonymous eighth, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Lavoine and a surprising i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Pedraza round out the top ten.

77 riders lost contact today but no big names are there, luckily. It does, however, mean that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Pendleton’s are reduced to just four riders at the top. And on that note we have a new yellow jersey wearer – i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Thomas Faiers becomes the second British rider in two days to wear the coveted jersey! He actually has a better chance of holding onto it in the coming week than i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Bradley Wiggins anyway. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Aidis Kruopis takes the mountain jersey, even if he did little to deserve it. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Daniele Bennati obviously takes over our first points jersey and he will be glad for the chance to get an early lead there. Finally, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Simply Red Bull lost more than 7 minutes today in the team competition, so are also well on their way to the wooden spoon there.
