Vuelta a Mallorca - Stage 1
SportingNonsense
The opening stage of the Vuelta a Mallorca is in theory flat, but there is an uphill kick before the finish that will favour the many puncheurs here. Sprinters such as Hushovd and Greipel may well face a challenge from the likes of Valverde

An 11 man breakaway gets away

Marcato took the first sprint from Kinney and Ghyllebert, and also the second sprint from Pagoto and Belkov

With 31km to go though, the breakaway has been caught
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/mallorcas1-4.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Vespa.png Kwiatkowski and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Aru both crash, but up front WWE have full control, though Greipel is actually following a Saab rider, with a long train behind him of Drujon, Maksimov, Hushovd, Valverde, Gatto, Trusov, Loddo and Sonnery. Meanwhile, Masciarelli is guiding Roche to the front
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/mallorcas1-5.jpg

With 8km to go, a far more important crash - i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bianchi.png Cobo!
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/mallorcas1-6.jpg

Hong Kong champion i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Wu trips over him, and carnage follows
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/mallorcas1-7.jpg

It gets worse for Bianchi as Lloret is also involved, while i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.png Roy is also down.

And for 3, the race is over. Injuries are too much for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Simon Gerrans, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/emu.png Cornelius van Ooijen, and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pirelli.png Matthew Busche.

WWE have lost control of the peloton, and with just 5km to go, Thomas Ziegler attacks
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/mallorcas1-8.jpg

Quinziato jumps after him
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/mallorcas1-9.jpg

Theres no organisation whatsoever. WWE may have worked for Greipel, but they offered no leadout for Greipel, infact, none of the sprinters seems to have a leadout. Therefore Ziegler and Quinizato are able to create a gap, although Quinziato hasnt managed to catch up with Ziegler as the sprint begins
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/mallorcas1-10.jpg

As Ziegler enters the final kilometre, it is Gatto who is first to launch in the peloton - Valverde and Roche are on his wheel
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/mallorcas1-11.jpg

Greipel, Hushovd and Maksimov are all up there and start to respond, but Gatto has put in a strong acceleration, and now Valverde jumps out from Gatto
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/mallorcas1-12.jpg

Its all too late for them though, Thomas Ziegler takes the stage!
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/mallorcas1-13.jpg

2nd for Quinziato, and both will take a 30 second gap on the rest of the field. Gatto faded behind but Valverde held strong, but not strong enough to hold off all the sprinters - and it is Drujon who takes 3rd place.
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/mallorcas1-15.jpg

Greipel 5th, Roche 6th, then Hushovd, Maksimov, Trusov and Borges.

The crash victims finish in two different groups. 16 @3'21, 17 @4'12. Cobo and Roy are in the first of these
