We begin the race with a fairly lumpy flat one which should favour the sprinters that have come here. It does flick up a bit near the end. The race directors have also put a sprint 7km from the end that can also complicate matters.
100 plus riders are with us for the start, for what is to be two tense days before than mountain top finish on stage three.
We come away from sea level early on and by this time a break has established itself. Ferrari left it's climbing leader Caruso at home, this has freed the team up to go on the attack as punchaer Cristiano Salerno
shows by taking the opening climb ahead of Giovanni Visconti and
Dainius Kairelis
Petr Ignatenko
Nikola Aistrup
Cristian Cominelli
Wen Hao Li
Andrew Talansky
and
Bernardo Colex
also make it in our break of the day.
It's a heavily wooded region of Slovenia and perfect for the break to build a sizable lead.
The sprints are keenly contested, breaks have been highly successful this season and these bonifications can nudge riders into the leaders position. Kairelis just holds off Salerno and Li at the first hotspot.
The second sprint is at 90 km to go and the breaks lead is up to a healthy 6 minutes. The break spread the bonuses around as Visconti nabs this one over Aistrup and Colex.
Vespa and Pirelli meanwhile look to chase things down knowing that things can start to stagnate around climbs like we have in between now and the finish.
It's a good job from these two teams as the breaks lead comes down to under three minutes with 50km to go. Pokerstars move to the front with José Rujano really racking up a very fast pace up the climb which has some steep sections.
The break hold on just about to take the points and Salerno wins it again to take the KoM jersey, with Visconti second, Kairalis third once more.
Behind though Pokerstars have surprised virtually all the GC favourites by forcing a selection on this tame looking climb. They have created a group of just 26 riders, which mainly consists of sprinters that is except Rujano.
A part list then of those favourites caught out:
Jose Alarcon
Domenico Pozzovivo
Jurgen Van den Broeck
Marco Marzano
Vladimir Efimkin
Magno Nazaret
Fabio Duarte
Przemyslaw Niemiec
Theo Eltink
Romain Sicard
Francisco Colorado
Peter Stetina
and
Sergio Ortega
It's basically any climbers other than Rujano and with 15km to go they catch the break with a lead of two minutes over the rest of the pack. With sprinters mainly in this front group Pokerstars are allowed to keep a lead. Things have reduced down to one minute and 20 seconds with 2.5km to go, a gap looks likely to remain though.
Assan Bazajev looks to improve his bosses mood by taking off early in the sprint with Lucas Sebastian Haedo following.
These two briefly look like they have stolen a march on this reduced group, Pokerstars notably are struggling to get Marco Guillén into position.
However Denis Galimzyanov brings the group back up the duo's wheel with
Kenny Van Hummel
Mathieu Drujon
Alejandro Borrajo
and
Emanuele Rizza
in tow.
Galimzyanov shows some speed here as he rockets through with Borrajo getting past Bazajev and Haedo also.
But with Bazajev obviously going far too early, Galimzaynov seems to have made an early move mistake also as the uphill bites. Rizza is the man who is coming back at him.
Van Hummel is the sprinter coming fastest of all and as the line approaches he now is closing on Rizza.
As we looking down this rising finish it looks as though Rizza has done enough.
Van Hummel though gains with every pedal stroke.
The Dutchman steals it away from Rizza at the last, what a close sprint.
Team directors though will no doubt be furious with the turn of events that sees a lot of riders lose time on Rujano today. 71 seconds to be precise, all but Pokerstars will be happy with this, as Pirelli and Vespa lead the remainder of the pack behind.
