The queen stage of the race and the question on most peoples list is just how hard will the finale up Takaka hill be? Will it be hard enough to drop Rogers and if so how long can Keizer last?
The early break takes a while to form, it is not until after the first categorised climb that we get a distinct group of five clear.
The group is made up of Hansen (P lasko), Van Poppel (UPC), Lejman (Bintang), Van de Schueren (HTC) and Rake (Risa).
The results from the two climbs are as follows:
KoM 1(3rd Cat):
1) Lejman
2) Van der Schueren
3) Rake
KoM 2(4th Cat):
1) Hansen
2) Lejman
3) Van Poppel
The net result is that Lejman is temporarily our new KoM leader.
VolksWagen with a little help from CSC manage to control the break well and have it under a minute as we get on to the lower slopes of our final climb.
This serves as a launch pad for some ambitious moves from top climbers Gamez Marchente (ING) and Ji (Meiji) who jump across with teammates Shimiza and Van Huffel.
This sets the pattern for the climb with these two excellent climbers pushing the pace dropping the former breakaways whilst having some support from their two team-mates.
The pack behind are whittling away and with 6km left the peloton is down to just 32 riders chasing the leading four.
Behind Ji, Shimiza, Van Huffel and Gomez Marchante we have:
Keizer, Prielder, Delgado (VolksWagen)
Bibby, Laksaim, Tekliehaimant (Jaguar)
Caruso, Dyachanko, Possoni (Cisco)
Rogers, Peraud, Lloyd, Lewis (Oz Cycling)
Rodrigues, Pantano Gomez, Marentes (Hollister
Marquez, Berard, Van Der Schueren (HTC)
Seeldreyers, Lejman (Bintang)
Vazquez, Ortega (Repsol)
Alizadeh, Jiriakov (Sauber)
Izagirre, Efimkon (LukOil)
Sano, Stetina (Meiji)
Serpa (Evian)
Abal (CSC)
These are joined by the now dropped Van Huffel as Gomez Marchante and Ji increase the pace.
No-one seems to be able to shut the leaders down, however with 3km to go the lead three become two with Shimizo finally relenting.
This seems to be a critical moment on the climb as the chasers are opening up with yellow jersey Rogers losing touch.
Serpa, Caruso, Abal, Keizer, Marquez and Bibby have prised open the gap.
However it is all too late to catch the lead duo who have judged their efforts very well indeed. It is between the two of the them for the stage and you fancy the race.
Ji is on the limit mind you and when Gomez Marchante moves away he cannot respond.
Gomez Marchante takes the win and the race leaders jersey. Behind Abal wins the sprint for third, but Keizer finishes in the group to hold 3rd overall.
Surpsisingly Marquez dropped off the back of this group to lead the Rogers group home. Rogers hanging on to a top 10 overall spot.
