Vuelta Castilla y León - Stage 1
roturn
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Castilla%20y%20Leon/mg_leon_1_0.jpg
The Spanish 5 day race starts with a sprint stage. Quite a few top sprinters participate here, so we can expect a nice fight for the stage win.

Most known and also one of the most successful sprinters so far in this season is surely
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Allan Davis

He will mostly be challenged by
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png JJ Haedo
and
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Marco Guillén

But also Santos, Trusov, Vingerling, Dall'Antonia, Lorenzetto, Marinangeli or Sabatini have to be named in a sprint finish.

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/emu.png Rutkiewicz and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cerne.png Reis are the first riders with an attack this morning.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Castilla%20y%20Leon/mg_leon_1_1.jpg

But more and more riders want in todays break.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Castilla%20y%20Leon/mg_leon_1_2.jpg

So they are joined by lots of other riders. 18 riders created a small gap.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Castilla%20y%20Leon/mg_leon_1_4.jpg

But California Giant is not happy at all with such a huge group. So they are bringing everything together again.
Pretty interesting that their leader Ryan Eastman is doing lots of work for JJ Haedo in this phase.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Castilla%20y%20Leon/mg_leon_1_3.jpg

No breakaway group until the only KoM of the day.
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/koppert.png Dieteren attacked out of the peloton and will wear the KoM jersey tomorrow. Nice start for Koppert, who start without real leader here.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Castilla%20y%20Leon/mg_leon_1_5.jpg
Santambrogio being 2nd after an counter attack with Rutkiewitz, Iannetti and Masciarelli taking the last points without fighting.

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Mauro Santambrogio used this situation to start a new attack. Almost 90km to go and no one is following behind, so he might have a long and lonely ride.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Castilla%20y%20Leon/mg_leon_1_6.jpg

Especially Pirelli and Pokerstars are doing the pace now.
These two teams are again expected to be at the front on the 3rd stage, when fighting for the overall win.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Castilla%20y%20Leon/mg_leon_1_8.jpg

But also California Giant and Hollister have ambitions today to win the stage. Still Eastman is doing lots of the work in the peloton.
It might go well for a possible sprint win with Haedo but actually he should save his energy for the mountain stage.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Castilla%20y%20Leon/mg_leon_1_9.jpg

Meanwhile Santambrogio can already celebrate. With 13km to go the advance is still at 3 minutes. Obviously the sprinter teams underestimated the Italian today.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Castilla%20y%20Leon/mg_leon_1_10.jpg

Behind the teams fail to make a real train for their stars and so a long train is built.
Dumoulin leads the whole pack with Haedo and Davis being in the best position ahead of Lorenzetto, Guillen, Vingerling, Trusov and Santos.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Castilla%20y%20Leon/mg_leon_1_11.jpg

Great solo ride by the Ferrari rider. He really fooled the sprinters today with this attack and will be the first race leader of the Castilla y Leon this season.
Totally exhausted he crosses the line not even able to celebrate a big win today.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Castilla%20y%20Leon/mg_leon_1_12.jpg

And more attacks on the last 5km. Ligthard initiated this move with Sutherland, Van Aelbroeck, Parra Bustamante and Elijzen following. What are the sprinters doing now?
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Castilla%20y%20Leon/mg_leon_1_13.jpg

No problem at all. The pace was too high and so Haedo and Davis are equal at the front. But Davis is coming from behind being a bit faster.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Castilla%20y%20Leon/mg_leon_1_14.jpg

So he takes 2nd ahead of the Argentine. With a bit more effort this could have been another season win for him, but they totally ignored Santambrogio today.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Castilla%20y%20Leon/mg_leon_1_15.jpg
Santos being 4th with Dumoulin (5th) being much stronger than Guillen (22nd) today.

The favourites had a calm day. This will surely change with the 3rd stage.
