Today brings one of the key days of the race – a highly stage through Spain culminating in a descent into San Sebastian. The 186km course contains 12 categorised climbs along the way with a maximum of 89 points available. Not only that but it appears that we are in for another windy day out on course. Five very tough climbs start with 68km. Gradients well over 10% are not uncommon in this part of the race.
Of course lots of riders are willing to brave these obstacles in order to take a shot at the mountain jersey. Looking to join the break first off the bat today is Daniel Navarro. He is a great climbing domestique and has clearly been given permission to take his own chances today.
Also keen to join the break today are a whole raft of riders. The early attackers are:
Pierre Rolland
Brent Bookwalter (27 mountain points)
Roman Kreuziger (4 mountain points)
Nick Nuyens (6 mountain points)
Stef Clement (14 mountain points)
Florian Morizot (35 mountain points)
Tim Dees
Philip Deignan
Johan Tschopp
Jan Ghyselinck
Arnold Jeannesson (6 mountain points) (+13’36”)
Teodoro Costagli (18 mountain points) (+10’25”)
Serge Pauwels
Francisco Terciado
Christophe Riblon
Amael Moinard (15 mountain points)
Jaroslav Kulhavy
Matea Kvasina
Jocelin Maillet
Woet Poels
Remberto Jaramillo
Koldo Gil (21 mountain points)
Nathan Haas
Ricardo Van der Velde (6 mountain points)
The first climb comes rather early in the day and the break is still forming. Moinard takes the 5 points on offer ahead of Costagli and then Clement.
In fact at the second climb things still haven’t settled down and a completely different group of riders leads over. This time Pauwels rolls over in first place, ahead of Maillet and then Kulhavy.
The high pace is clearly taking the toll as some riders are already dropping off the back – the pace is combining with the wind to make it hard on the flat. Adding in the steep climbs just makes this whole day even more difficult. It is clear that things are quite nervous as well as Granjel Cabrera and Maskaant both fall as well.
There are yet more attackers from the bunch now. In addition to a number of riders from earlier the following decide to give it a go.
Thomas Kedel Kvist
Thomas Frei
Sergio Marinangelli
Mohammed Mat Senan
Tyler Brandt
Lars Petter Nordhaug
Tom Stubbe
Jonathon Castroviejo (17 mountain points)
Mikael Delage
Jakub Danacik
And finally, after 56km of racing we have our break of the day. The six riders in there have really fought for this. They are:
Lars Petter Nordhaug
Florian Morizot (35 mountain points)
Jonathon Castroviejo (17 mountain points)
Brent Bookwalter (27 mountain points)
Teodoro Costagli (18 mountain points) (+10’25”)
Ricardo Van der Velde (6 mountain points)
It isn’t long before these six take on the next climb together. Morizot attacks away for the points, with Bookwalter also attacking but not able to hold the wheel. Costagli rolls over for the remaining point. The gap is at 5’41” over the peloton.
At the next climb Bookwalter manages to catch Morizot out and takes the five points. Costagli once again takes the single remaining point. The gap is now at 6’20” and all of the dropped riders have returned to the bunch. It is also interesting to see Heineken helping B&O out with this early pace.
The fifth climb of the day is longer and harder than the others so far today and hence it is a second category climb. The gap to the break starts to stall at around the 6’20” mark with those two teams working. At the peak Morizot jumps away to take the ten points, with Bookwalter once again fighting for second. This time it is Van der Velde’s turn to roll over in third.
The break roll on and finally hit that crucial 68km to go mark – the start of the five tough back-to-back climbs. The gap has marginally come down towards the 6 minute mark. This climb rises ahead of them ominously with its maximum gradient of 18% and various peaks above 12%.
This time at the summit it isn’t just the same two guys fighting for it – Costagli jumps out to take the ten points on offer. Morizot is second and Bookwalter is third, but they will have to continue to fight to keep the first and second place in this competition they seem to be aiming at.
Over the top of this climb, back in the bunch, 81 riders are dropped, and it looks like there are some interesting names back here:
Pedraza (13th overall)
Abal (15th overall)
Ratiy
Duarte
Henao
Most of Abal’s teammates rally around him and try to pace him back on the descent and into the next climb. He is a fair way back. Pedraza also manages to join his little group.
On to the second of the climbs in this set. Morizot wins the fight at the top this time. Costagli takes second place and Bookwalter is relegated to third again. Amongst the riders in the breakaway here are the mountain points:
Florian Morizot
71
Brent Bookwalter
55
Teodoro Costagli
45
Jonathon Castroviejo
23
Ricardo Van der Velde
16
Lars Petter Nordhaug
2
So as it currently sits, given that current mountain jersey wearer Ghyllebert is on 44, these three riders are the top three in the classification at the moment.
On this seventh climb the peloton is led by Grivko and Guldhammer – once again B&O’s lack of depth mean that they have to turn to their key domestiques a long way from the finish. Perhaps realising that they can’t afford to set the pace too high this early, things are slow enough to ensure that Abal and Pedraza can get back.
The gap is at 5’38” before the start of the eighth categorised climb of the day, with 45.5km to go. The break power up here but once we get to the top it is noteworthy that one of the usual attackers isn’t here – Morizot takes the points and Costagli takes second but it is Castroviejo who rolls over in third. It looks like Bookwalter has blown!
There is only the briefest of descents before the next climb, which is only a short and sharp category three. This time as the break reach the summit Castroviejo goes over first, with Nordhaug and Van der Velde in his wheel... it looks like Costagli is just behind them but Morizot has blown completely! Still he has probably done enough to pretty much guarantee himself the mountain jersey tomorrow.
Nothing much behind seems to be happening apart from the shredding of the peloton as Guldhammer decides to put the hammer down. Also Kittel falls way behind but his purpose has been served for the race anyway.
Up front onto the tenth of twelve climbs in the day, Castroviejo decides to launch an attack for the ten points. That moves him into fourth place in the provisional mountain rankings. Van der Velde takes second ahead of Nordhaug. Here are the gaps going over the top with 34km remaining:
45”
12”
3’35”
4’32”
Break
---> Costagli
--->
Morizot
--->
P (39)
Note that this gives Costagli just enough points to overtake Bookwalter and move into second.
As that table said it is down to just 39 riders back in the bunch and it is still mostly Grivko and Guldhammer doing the work.
Pretty soon we get some idea of why Heineken was working as Brajkovic launches an attack. He is followed by:
Tenorio
Amador
Nepomnyachsniy
Velits
This attack is controlled by Grivko, but it does the damage which it needed to – the touch paper has been lit and now things are really going to kick off. As if he was waiting for this moment Schleck decides to launch an attack! He is followed by:
Amador
Tenorio
Nepomnyachsniy
Of these all but Nepomnyachsniy are able to get a gap over the bunch and the race is clearly on! We are almost at the summit of this penultimate climb. There will then be a quick descent which travels down to the final climb of the day.
Up front it seems that Nordhaug and Van der Velde have succeeded in shaking off Castroviejo. It hardly seems to matter, however, as the group of Schleck is only 1’30” behind them and then it is another 37” back to the bunch.
Anton and Brajkovic try to bridge up but Guldhammer won’t let them get a gap.
Perhaps seeing his teammate fail to get away sparked something as Abal attacks on the descent with Faiers in tow.
Ponzi and Intxausti both decide that this is an interesting enough move to follow and they bridge up to them. Seeing Ponzi attack is particularly interesting as he has been judged one of the stage favourites for today.
The group of Schleck now catch the shattered remnants of the break. They have 25” over the chase group and another 11” over the peloton of 32 riders as we hit a small rise which is half way down this descent.
Lots of favourites who missed these moves are working back in the bunch in order to try to bring things back and indeed it is Pedraza who brings back the chase group. Not long after that Cunego puts a big turn in and he manages to catch the group of Schleck.
It looks as if we will face this final climb and then the descent following it as just one group but just as the climb is about to start Ponzi puts in an attack. Brambilla and Nepomnyachsniy follow him but can’t help set the pace.
Most of this climb is at about the 11% mark and so some of the more pure climbers can’t really do much beyond sitting in the group. One person who is not having issues with this is Brajkovic who attacks and gets a gap.
Brajkovic manages to bridge up to the three leaders. They currently have a 29” gap over the bunch.
In fact Brajkovic and Ponzi drop the other two and they head over the summit with a 33” lead over the 31 riders in the pack behind.
Not wanting to risk a sprint between the two, which has a tendency to be unpredictable, Ponzi decides to attack on the descent!
He gets a solid gap of about 15” around these rather technical bends, but nevertheless Brajkovic pulls him back with only 3km remaining in this stage. The bunch are breathing down their necks.
Kohl and Faiers do much of the work to bring these two back, in order to defend the top ten position of Faiers which Brajkovic threatens. With 2 kilometres to go Ponzi and Brajkovic are definitively caught and the sprint opens.
Pluchkin, Madrazo, Pedraza, Velits, Abal and Intxausti are all well placed at the front of this group, but in these sorts of chaotic sprints there is no way to guarantee a good finish.
Madrazo looks the fastest of these and under the kite he is leading, but what’s this? Cunego has come from nowhere and is moving like lightning!
As Cunego powers into the lead Pluchkin fades quite seriously – while the Italian will almost certainly be getting bonus seconds, it looks like the race leader will miss out! Sicard and Kangert are looking strong in the finish here too.
The man entered the stage as the favourite and he comes away with the win – that takes true class. Damiano Cunego takes the stage victory and the 20 bonus seconds. He can’t quite get a time gap, however, even though he wins by several bike lengths.
Kangert narrowly takes second place, capping off a great day for Pearl. Madrazo will have to settle for third place and the 8 seconds that go with that. Sicard is a strong fourth place. Once again the long-range attack of Schleck just failed to crack the bunch and he will have to be content with fifth. Valls and Lopez Garcia were well placed near the front in the sprint and so they take sixth and seventh on the stage. Amador continues his consistent race with eighth. Ponzi will have to settle for ninth. He gambled on winning the race with an attack but it didn’t quite pay off. Finally race leader Pluchkin rounds out the top ten and will watch his leading margin shrink still further.
And on that note let’s see how the GC is shaping up – Cunego moves into second place and is now only 11 seconds back. The race will continue in the mountains tomorrow. Ponzi had a real chance to take back the points jersey today but could only get 7 points, falling short of what he needed. He will also have to continue to keep an eye on Cunego in that competition. Morizot will wear the mountain jersey tonight through will the stage profile tomorrow he may not wear it for long.
And finally we come to the list of casualties for the day – a total of 18 riders abandoned after this stage! Let’s have a look to see who is here:
Some teams have been absolutely decimated by this race. VolksWagen only has 3 out of their 9 starters left! Pokerstars are down to 5 while UBS, CSC and Festina are all down to 6. With Festina and Pokerstars both short of riders it will be interesting to see if Puma can push their advantage on the flat stages.
