Today’s stage brings us two long and hard HC climbs – the Col de la Bonette and the Col du Parpaillon. The former is a long 25.9km @ 6.4% while the latter is 17.2km but a much harder 7.9%. After the Col du Parpaillon there is a technical 36km descent which brings us to the finishing town. Finally, the race finishes on a 1.1km uncategorised climb which averages around 5%.

With the long descent to the finish it looks like a perfect day for a break. The first one to really give it a go is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Serge Pauwels. He has 6 mountain points which could be useful with the 40 on offer today but others may have the same thought.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-2.jpg

Those other riders are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Johan Tschopp
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Stef Clement (15 mountain points)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Arnold Jeannesson (32 mountain points)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Lars Petter Nordhaug (42 mountain points)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Marcel Wyss (16 mountain points)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Tom Stubbe
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Roman Kreuziger (12 mountain points)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Mikael Delage
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Sergio Marinangeli
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Mathieu Sprick
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Ricardo Van der Velde (34 mountain points)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Tim Kennaugh (20 mountain points)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Jocelin Maillet (4 mountain points)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Brian Vandborg (4 mountain points)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Koldo Gil (31 mountain points)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Geert Steurs

And interestingly every single one of these riders is allowed to move up to the front of the race and we get a huge breakaway of 17 riders.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-3.jpg

Of the riders here i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Van der Velde is the best placed overall. He is in 28th place, 42’52” down and this is a really good chance for him to solidify a top 30 overall position.

Back in the pack i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Santander are the only team doing the work – they still have 9 riders left which is becoming more and more of a rarity. The break has a lead of 8’53” as the first of our two climbs begins.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-4.jpg

The pace in the pack is pretty gentle and the gap keeps expanding but this gentle pace is still too hard for a number of sprinters and they are shelled out the back. It is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Serrano, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Veloso and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Rienda Segura who are doing all of the work at this point.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-5.jpg

There are no major events along the climb until we reach the top. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Nordhaug, who had the most mountain points coming into today, decides to attack. He can’t maintain this advantage as he isn’t quite a good enough climber, but either way the rest of the group allows him to roll over the top in first. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Jeannesson comes over in second and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Van der Velde is in third. The gap to the pack, which is reduced to 94 riders, is 10’41”.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-6.jpg

The crowd is really out in force on the Col du Parpaillon. The break reach it with a gap which now sits at 11’01”.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-7.jpg

This entire race has been marked by spates of bad luck for a variety of riders and now it is the turn of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Peter Velits. As the bunch is reduced to 67 riders and the pace increases the Slovakian rider punctures and has to wait for a team car. His 11th place overall is looking in serious danger.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-8.jpg

Almost at the same time, with 13km to the summit i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin decides to launch a bid for glory.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-9.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin gets a good gap so i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Amador and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Intxausti look to bridge up to him. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic follows them while i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Abal and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Pedraza follow at a distance, trying to get into this chase group.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-10.jpg

Seeing that this is a powerful group i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio hits the front. He is clearly being forced to sacrifice his own GC ambitions in order to defend the overall lead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Abal and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Pedraza are caught by him and the bunch is reduced to 37.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-11.jpg

With 7km to go for the peloton it is clear that the pace is extremely high. In fact the gap to the bunch has been more than halved since the start of the climb. The gaps are:

5’14”32”25”23”
Break--->i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin--->Gr. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Intxausti--->i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard--->P (36)

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard is dragged in with 4.5km to the summit and just as that happens i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck launches an attack!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-12.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo follows his attack. These two then catch up to the group of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Intxausti to form a strong group of five riders. Their gap goes out and they gain a minute on the bunch behind them. Note that i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin is still ahead of them.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-13.jpg

The group behind is now down to 15 riders:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio, Valls, Lopez Garcia
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Kohl, Faiers
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Abal, Anton
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Pedraza
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Duarte
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Henao
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Costagli
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Medvedev
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Augustyn

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard sees that this move could be hugely important so he tries to bridge up to the five riders ahead of him. There is still no reaction from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego yet.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-14.jpg

Up front i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin ends the hopes of a number of riders as he catches the break.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-15.jpg

Not only does the Moldovan champion catch this group but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo’s group catches them and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard solos up to them as well. The group has now grown quite large. There is some confusion as riders try to find their way through and teammates move to those who have bridged up and thanks to this slight slow-down i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Abal is able to bring the remnants of the bunch back. There is just over 1km left.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-16.jpg

His first attempt having ended rather abruptly, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin now attacks. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Amador and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic also give it a go but they can’t quite follow i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-17.jpg

Now i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck manages to get a gap. The climbers are determined to use every inch of this mountain.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-18.jpg

The riders go over the top and the gaps are:

27”13”24”
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin--->i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Amador--->i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Braj / i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck--->P (31)

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-19.jpg

On the descent 13 riders break clear from the peloton, including the main GC riders who were there except for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Faiers, who is behind.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-20.jpg

With 14km of descending remaining the front four riders all join up together 30 seconds ahead of this first part of the bunch.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-21.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego may have kept his powder dry throughout the climb but with 4.7km left he decides to go for it – he attacks on the descent. The bunch is also swollen by another 13 riders joining up though once again no sign of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Faiers.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-22.jpg

With 3km to go i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego has pulled out 18 seconds on the bunch – this late attack could be working! By the 1km mark he has almost closed the gap to the 4 leaders!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-23.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck leads the front group under the kite with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Amador on either shoulder and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin at the back. Unless i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego has a superhuman kick it looks like these four will be fighting it out for the stage win today.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-24.jpg

It is just down to two – i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Amador!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-25.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Andy Schleck just edges out the stage win here on the first Alpine stage!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF18-26.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Amador will have to be content with second place. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin recoups some pride and some time by taking third place. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic was the weakest in the lead group in fourth. But what’s this? i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego has tacked himself onto the rear of the group for fifth place, but more importantly the same time gap as the others!

37 seconds later the GC riders come through, lead in by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo himself. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio was doing a lot of pulling in the finale and takes seventh. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Intxausti gets eighth place ahead of i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard and the best of the original break i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Van der Velde.

So with that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego narrows the gap to 56 seconds going into the final two mountain stages. That should ensure some fireworks! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego will also now wear the points jersey as he moves into the lead there by three points. Other than that there are no changes in the jerseys and the GC remains largely the same as it was this morning but we can expect some changes tomorrow.
