The first stage of the Vuelta a Burgos is rated as flat, but that is not entirely true, with an uphill finish for the stage. Will the sprinters come out on top, or will a well-placed speedy puncheur pull off an upset?
4 in the break: Goos, Cieslak, Rovira and Ovechkin
The intermediate sprints proved to be a two-sided affair.
S1: 1. Goos 2. Rovira 3. Ovechkin
S2: 1. Goos 2. Rovira 3. Ovechkin
S3: 1. Rovira 2. Goos 3. Cieslak
Goos and Rovira picked up 16 and 14 points/seconds respectively - which could see them into 2nd and 3rd overall at the end of the day.
Ovechkin won the first KoM but was only 3rd at the 2nd, while Rovira collected a 2nd and a 1st to take the jersey.
KOM1: 1. Ovechkin 2. Rovira 3. Cieslak
KOM2: 1. Rovira 2. Cieslak 3. Ovechkin
And it just shows how hard the uphill finish actually will be, given that it is at the top of a Cat 3 climb! KoM points will indeed be awarded at the finish line, but Rovira's lead is safe so long as Ovechkin is not involved.
Survival for the breakaway does seem unlikely too. Metinvest are understandably working for Hoffman, but Bouygues Telecom are helping considerably too .. for Theo Bos!
The first achievement reached for Bos is that he was not the first rider to be dropped. But that is all he could manage as by 6km to go, he too was out the back.
Not long later, at the 5km to go mark, the breakaway are caught.
Metinvest and Hollister move forward to set up the sprint trains.
Sheydyk and Capecchi ride for Hoffman, with Giaux following the South African.
Selander and Marentes are optimistically hoping for Serebriakov to handle the uphill finish. In tow are Breschel and Bertilsson.
Some other dangerous names are also well placed: Kunshin, Moreno, Dekker, Kolesnikov, Bongiorno and Rodriguez Oliver
But Hollister fade away as Capecchi opens the sprint. Lasca has made a late arrival to the front, on to Giaux's wheel.
Breschel manages to tag on to the end of this train too, but a gap emerges behind as Bertilsson holds up some of the stronger climbers in the mix. Hollister lead out Marentes is still well placed, as Hoffman launches early to take advantage of the gap to the climbers.
Giaux and Breschel go with him, as they enter the final kilometre.
Yes, that is the entire Bouygues team in the distance, ;leading home the Bos group
They lead the way, but starting to accelerate forwards are Eltink, Kunshin, Moreno and Dekker!
Breschel is stronger on the hills than Hoffman, and this shows as he takes the lead.
But he is going to have to push on to keep it, with Dekker and Moreno going shoulder to shoulder on the inside, and almost up on terms with the Dane.
Thomas Dekker has the most left though, and he kicks again to win the stage!
Kolesnikov comes up the middle for 2nd, with Moreno in 3rd.
Breschel must settle for 4th, and Hoffman for 6th, with Kunshin in between. Rodriguez Oliver, Eltink, Krizek and Giaux complete the Top 10.
And as previously viewed in the distance, Bouygues Telecom show that they have not forgotten their regular party trick from all seasons in the ManGame, of abandoning all personal chances in favour of Theo Bos.
The break of 4 all kept in the peloton, so their time bonuses gained are relevant. Goos not only takes 2nd overall, but the lead in the best young rider competition as well.
