With the unfortunate cancellation of the planned stage (due to an issue with narrow roads) the race organisers have transferred the riders to our new stage 5 which will take us to Toulon Mont Faron. It is a similarly hilly sort of stage that also takes in the Col de Gardes. The stage is only 119.4km long, meaning that we should have some quick riding, and that could be an interesting mix with the very strong winds out on course today.
Here is a look at the finishing profile today:
Five riders make up our initial attack:
Brian Vandborg
Nick Nuyens
Dmitri Grabovski
Roman Kreuziger
Julien Simon
Given that the race starts on a fairly long hill no teams are willing to push too hard to chase them down and so they create a gap. That isn’t to say that the pace is sedate, however, and some riders are clearly hurting. In fact the bunch splits pretty quickly as the road flattens out again and several GC leaders have missed the 52-man cut:
Andy Schleck
Sergio Henao
Andrei Amador
Justo Tenorio
And also the yellow jersey Thomas Faiers.
Santander and Heineken decide that this is a good opportunity and so they start to push the pace for their leaders. The stage has just begun but we already have a cracking pace. The gap is out to 1’30”
Up front the break reach the first of the two sprint points of the day, which is easily won by Vandborg ahead of Grabovski, with Nuyens rolling over in third. The lead is only at 1’20” thanks to the fast pace involved in the chasing behind.
But the chasing may not last too much longer as Porte leads a big group back to the first peloton. This has all of the GC riders mentioned above except for Tenorio, who is actually in yet another group 3’32” behind the first peloton. Our race leader Faiers is back, however.
It seems that this rejoining takes some of the heat out of the bunch and so they sit up somewhat, and with 77km remaining Tenorio is brought back by a lot of his teammates, allowing his manager to breathe a sigh of relief. Only a handful of riders sit behind the pack now, but their gap is growing to dangerous proportions, already beyond 10 minutes.
Two teams are present at the peloton as the gap steadies at 5 minutes – Lotto and Vesuvio. They are working for their leaders Cunego and Schleck today.
Their work is clearly quite effective as the gap is down to 2’21” as the descent towards the final climbs begins. There are 32km remaining but they are the hardest kilometres of the stage.
Simon wins the sprint ahead of Kreuziger and Vandborg this time. If everyone finishes on the same time today Vandborg will move up into the top 5, but with this finishing climb that may prove difficult.
The tough uncategorised climb right before Col de Gardes is up now, and Pendleton’s is the team most present on the front. The peloton stretches... and snaps! Only 82 riders remain in this main group but none of the GC contenders have missed this cut.
We now get a short lull as people look around for their team leaders. Seizing the opportunity Augustyn attacks away from the reduced bunch. He has no major results to his name this season but he is a strong puncheur and climber, so this could be dangerous from 20km out. The gap to the leaders is only 1’41” now.
Four riders bridge up to him:
Igor Anton
Tanel Kangert
Kristjan Koren
Gianluca Brambilla
But Guldhammer is not allowing any large gaps to form here and they can only pull out about 25”.
Simon lead the break over the Col de Gardes and onto the descent which will take us to Mount Faron. Grabovski comes second here ahead of Nuyens in third. However, their gap is only at 1 minute to the chasers and another 30” to the 58 man Peloton.
Samwel is clearly in better form than he has been showing for much of this season, as he leads the bunch over the climb, shedding lots of riders in the process and keeping the attackers in sight.
The chasers catch the break at the very bottom of the roughly 7km climb, setting up a ten man lead group just over a minute ahead of the charging pack.
Grabovski and Anton put in an attack near the start of the climb. Most of the break can follow this, however, and it doesn’t go very far.
It doesn’t matter a lot, as it happens. Monfort puts in a huge effort back in the bunch and he brings the entire break back into the fold, meaning that the stage favourites can fight it out for honours today!
And on that note Cobo and Tenorio attack away with 5.5km to the summit in a section of the climb in excess of 12%. These are two of the strongest puncheurs in the race and both had been mentioned as stage favourites. Could Lotto have been tricking other teams into thinking that they were actually working for Cunego?
Brambilla and Augustyn, both part of the earlier attack, now try to bridge up. Anton, another member of that same attack, controls this movement and brings all the other attackers back, leaving us all together once again with 4.5km to go.
That won’t deter the wild attacking spirit of Cobo, however, who now launches a solo effort.
His previous partner Tenorio tries to bridge up to him but he hasn’t got the power and sits in no man’s land about 25” back. But that’s not the most exciting thing – race radio blares out new attacks! Two race favourites are going for it:
Damiano Cunego
Aleksandr Pluchkin
Pluchkin can’t hold the Italian champion’s wheel. Cunego powers past Tenorio and sits only 15” behind his teammates Cobo. He has 18” on the bunch, which is now down to 54 riders.
Brajkovic and Ponzi try to get away from the bunch but Madrazo controls this move. He really needs to shut this gap down before it gives him too much work to do in the mountains.
With 2km remaining Cunego bridges up to his teammate Cobo... and then he promptly drops him! He has 31” over the bunch and really needs to keep his pace high!
With this gap growing slowly but surely Madrazo realises what needs to be done – he attacks the rest of the bunch! There are only 20 riders left here and they are:
Pluchkin, Guldhammer, Grivko
Sicard, Kangert
Faiers, Kohl
Brajkovic, Koren
Ponzi
Velits
Tenorio
Schleck
Amador
Lloret
Henao
Pedraza
Intxausti
Abal
Pinot
Pluchkin realises the danger here and he jumps onto Madrazo’s wheel, and the two of them pull out a gap with about 1500 metres remaining.
Cunego gets to the 1km remaining marker and here is the situation:
26”
12”
20”
Cunego
--->
Cobo
--->
Madrazo / Pluchkin
--->
Peloton
Schleck leads a late surge in the bunch and catches Madrazo and Pluchkin. He looks a bit less comfortable than the other contenders for the overall win today.
Damiano Cunego, however, goes uncaught and crosses the line solo. What a dominant win from the defending champion – his fourth win of the season! Not only that but Cobo crosses the line in second place take make is an amazing 1-2 for their team.
But what’s this? Madrazo, Pluchkin and Schleck seem to have a gap over the rest of the favourites group.
And Madrazo goes one better – he crosses the line in third place, 42” down, but with an 8” gap over Pluchkin and Schleck, who take fourth and fifth respectively.
Sicard looks strong in sixth, another 10” back (and 1 minute down on our winner today), with Guldhammer a rather surprising seventh, Brajkovic an eighth, Ponzi only managing ninth and Amador rounding out the top ten.
But it looks like Faiers has been dropped along with some of the GC contenders!
Everyone here loses a further 28”. Intxausti, Abal and Henao are the three biggest names here, which isn’t really that surprising given that they are three of the worst GC riders on the hills.
Eleven riders withdraw from today’s stage:
Terpstra and Vanoverschelde both suffered crashes on the descent towards Mount Faron and were forced to withdraw from them. The other riders were simply outside of the time limit, having been dropped much earlier.
So let’s have a look at how the jerseys are shaping up with a key GC stage out of the way. Damiano Cunego puts on the yellow jersey and he will surely look to hold this all the way to Paris to become the first defending champion of the TDF in Man Game history. Simone Ponzi is 59” back in second and Aleksandr Pluchkin is exactly 1 minute back now. Angel Madrazo has some work to do in sixth place 1’16” down and Andy Schleck even more 1’33” back. Cunego also takes the lead in the mountain competition. Ponzi sneaks ever closer in the points competition and could be one to watch out for in that. After today’s 1-2 it is no surprise that Lotto take over the team’s classification lead. Meanwhile Guldhammer just manages to hold on to the young rider jersey.
