Tour de France - Stage 5
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-1.jpg

With the unfortunate cancellation of the planned stage (due to an issue with narrow roads) the race organisers have transferred the riders to our new stage 5 which will take us to Toulon Mont Faron. It is a similarly hilly sort of stage that also takes in the Col de Gardes. The stage is only 119.4km long, meaning that we should have some quick riding, and that could be an interesting mix with the very strong winds out on course today.

Here is a look at the finishing profile today:

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-2.jpg

Five riders make up our initial attack:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Brian Vandborg
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Nick Nuyens
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Dmitri Grabovski
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Roman Kreuziger
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Julien Simon

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-3.jpg

Given that the race starts on a fairly long hill no teams are willing to push too hard to chase them down and so they create a gap. That isn’t to say that the pace is sedate, however, and some riders are clearly hurting. In fact the bunch splits pretty quickly as the road flattens out again and several GC leaders have missed the 52-man cut:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Andy Schleck
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Sergio Henao
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Andrei Amador
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Justo Tenorio
And also the yellow jersey i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Thomas Faiers.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Santander and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Heineken decide that this is a good opportunity and so they start to push the pace for their leaders. The stage has just begun but we already have a cracking pace. The gap is out to 1’30”

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-4.jpg

Up front the break reach the first of the two sprint points of the day, which is easily won by i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Vandborg ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Grabovski, with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Nuyens rolling over in third. The lead is only at 1’20” thanks to the fast pace involved in the chasing behind.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-5.jpg

But the chasing may not last too much longer as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Porte leads a big group back to the first peloton. This has all of the GC riders mentioned above except for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio, who is actually in yet another group 3’32” behind the first peloton. Our race leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Faiers is back, however.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-6.jpg

It seems that this rejoining takes some of the heat out of the bunch and so they sit up somewhat, and with 77km remaining i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio is brought back by a lot of his teammates, allowing his manager to breathe a sigh of relief. Only a handful of riders sit behind the pack now, but their gap is growing to dangerous proportions, already beyond 10 minutes.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-7.jpg

Two teams are present at the peloton as the gap steadies at 5 minutes – i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Lotto and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Vesuvio. They are working for their leaders i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck today.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-8.jpg

Their work is clearly quite effective as the gap is down to 2’21” as the descent towards the final climbs begins. There are 32km remaining but they are the hardest kilometres of the stage.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-9.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Simon wins the sprint ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Kreuziger and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Vandborg this time. If everyone finishes on the same time today i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Vandborg will move up into the top 5, but with this finishing climb that may prove difficult.

The tough uncategorised climb right before Col de Gardes is up now, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Pendleton’s is the team most present on the front. The peloton stretches... and snaps! Only 82 riders remain in this main group but none of the GC contenders have missed this cut.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-10.jpg

We now get a short lull as people look around for their team leaders. Seizing the opportunity i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Augustyn attacks away from the reduced bunch. He has no major results to his name this season but he is a strong puncheur and climber, so this could be dangerous from 20km out. The gap to the leaders is only 1’41” now.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-11.jpg

Four riders bridge up to him:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Igor Anton
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Tanel Kangert
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Kristjan Koren
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Gianluca Brambilla

But i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Guldhammer is not allowing any large gaps to form here and they can only pull out about 25”.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-12.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Simon lead the break over the Col de Gardes and onto the descent which will take us to Mount Faron. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Grabovski comes second here ahead of i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Nuyens in third. However, their gap is only at 1 minute to the chasers and another 30” to the 58 man Peloton.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-13.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Samwel is clearly in better form than he has been showing for much of this season, as he leads the bunch over the climb, shedding lots of riders in the process and keeping the attackers in sight.

The chasers catch the break at the very bottom of the roughly 7km climb, setting up a ten man lead group just over a minute ahead of the charging pack.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-14.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Grabovski and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Anton put in an attack near the start of the climb. Most of the break can follow this, however, and it doesn’t go very far.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-15.jpg

It doesn’t matter a lot, as it happens. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Monfort puts in a huge effort back in the bunch and he brings the entire break back into the fold, meaning that the stage favourites can fight it out for honours today!

And on that note i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cobo and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio attack away with 5.5km to the summit in a section of the climb in excess of 12%. These are two of the strongest puncheurs in the race and both had been mentioned as stage favourites. Could i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Lotto have been tricking other teams into thinking that they were actually working for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego?

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-16.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Brambilla and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Augustyn, both part of the earlier attack, now try to bridge up. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Anton, another member of that same attack, controls this movement and brings all the other attackers back, leaving us all together once again with 4.5km to go.

That won’t deter the wild attacking spirit of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cobo, however, who now launches a solo effort.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-17.jpg

His previous partner i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio tries to bridge up to him but he hasn’t got the power and sits in no man’s land about 25” back. But that’s not the most exciting thing – race radio blares out new attacks! Two race favourites are going for it:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Damiano Cunego
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Aleksandr Pluchkin

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-18.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin can’t hold the Italian champion’s wheel. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego powers past i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio and sits only 15” behind his teammates i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cobo. He has 18” on the bunch, which is now down to 54 riders.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-19.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi try to get away from the bunch but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo controls this move. He really needs to shut this gap down before it gives him too much work to do in the mountains.

With 2km remaining i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego bridges up to his teammate i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cobo... and then he promptly drops him! He has 31” over the bunch and really needs to keep his pace high!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-20.jpg

With this gap growing slowly but surely i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo realises what needs to be done – he attacks the rest of the bunch! There are only 20 riders left here and they are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin, Guldhammer, Grivko
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard, Kangert
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Faiers, Kohl
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic, Koren
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Velits
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-21.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin realises the danger here and he jumps onto i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo’s wheel, and the two of them pull out a gap with about 1500 metres remaining.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-22.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego gets to the 1km remaining marker and here is the situation:

26”12”20”

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-23.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck leads a late surge in the bunch and catches i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin. He looks a bit less comfortable than the other contenders for the overall win today.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-24.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Damiano Cunego, however, goes uncaught and crosses the line solo. What a dominant win from the defending champion – his fourth win of the season! Not only that but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cobo crosses the line in second place take make is an amazing 1-2 for their team.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-25.jpg

But what’s this? i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck seem to have a gap over the rest of the favourites group.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-26.jpg

And i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo goes one better – he crosses the line in third place, 42” down, but with an 8” gap over i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck, who take fourth and fifth respectively.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-27.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard looks strong in sixth, another 10” back (and 1 minute down on our winner today), with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Guldhammer a rather surprising seventh, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic an eighth, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi only managing ninth and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Amador rounding out the top ten.

But it looks like i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Faiers has been dropped along with some of the GC contenders!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-28.jpg

Everyone here loses a further 28”. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Intxausti, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Abal and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Henao are the three biggest names here, which isn’t really that surprising given that they are three of the worst GC riders on the hills.

Eleven riders withdraw from today’s stage:

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF5-29.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Terpstra and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Vanoverschelde both suffered crashes on the descent towards Mount Faron and were forced to withdraw from them. The other riders were simply outside of the time limit, having been dropped much earlier.

So let’s have a look at how the jerseys are shaping up with a key GC stage out of the way. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Damiano Cunego puts on the yellow jersey and he will surely look to hold this all the way to Paris to become the first defending champion of the TDF in Man Game history. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Simone Ponzi is 59” back in second and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Aleksandr Pluchkin is exactly 1 minute back now. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Angel Madrazo has some work to do in sixth place 1’16” down and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Andy Schleck even more 1’33” back. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego also takes the lead in the mountain competition. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi sneaks ever closer in the points competition and could be one to watch out for in that. After today’s 1-2 it is no surprise that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Lotto take over the team’s classification lead. Meanwhile i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Guldhammer just manages to hold on to the young rider jersey.
