Another tough hilly stage. Also a great stage for the KoM riders as we see a lot of them today.
Yesterday the peloton slept a bit and so Sousa was able to improve up to 3rd in the GC. Will we see something similar again?
No. Only 3 riders and surprisingly no real KoM contender and nobody in a dangerous position in the GC.
Allonca
Bucciero
Kung
Again a short overview over the first 5 KoM sprints as no rider really went for it. In the end Kung collected 22 points in those with Bucciero taking 20 and Allonca 18 points.
The gap went up to more than 8min but as all of them are at least 1h behind it`s of course no danger.
All Repsol riders in the front with 5 riders covering GC leader Kashechkin. Their 7th starter Ferrari abandoned yesterday.
But the pace isn`t high and so the gap stays betwen 8 and 9min.
The next mountain is quite special as it`s a HC rated one like some surprising hills in this race.
Allonca, Kung, Bucciero the order and so they almost doubled their daily account here.
Is it an attack or is Zaini going for the KoM only? At least he takes 10 points here and as no other rider wants the points the Repsol riders get those.
A bit surprising that neither Devine nor Sousa was interested to take the solo lead.
It was obviously an attempt to attack as Zaini is still ahead. Other riders try to follow with Dyachenko and Vrecer. So 15th and 9th in the GC.
Kashechkin isn`t really careing as his gap is big enough. But several other teams are.
The teams of Gadret, Peraud, Nicacio, Khripta or Ratiy don`t like these GC attacks and so the pace gets a bit higher.
Peraud even attacks now as well with 25km to go. He is immediately followed by several riders:
Pellizotti
Ardila
Gadret
Lejman
Nicacio
Kiserlovski
So quite a lot of riders, that are a big danger GC wise.
But in especially LukOil is not happy and catches them. A bit surprising as they don`t have the best riders here.
18km to go and still a gap of 6min. So the stage win will pretty sure go to the breakaway.
But behind some more riders try to attack the GC.
Ardila
Anton
Lejman
This also brings the trio Zaini, Vrecer, Dyachenko back into the peloton.
Last and probably also hardest climb and Jiao, Lejman and Anton have a small gap the the peloton down to 70 riders.
Zaini, Kiserlovski, Lowe, Pellizotti and also Ratiy try to create a gap before they enter the descent. Last one is most surprising as so far Ratiy didn`t show much strength in the hilly stages. Good for his manager to see him getting stronger towards the end of the race it seems.
As only rider Lowe was able to get a gap. As 11th in the GC he isn`t placed that bad even though he might hope to improve into the top10.
All others are caught and sit together in the 44 rider peloton, where no GC rider showed weakness today.
Even Stetina was able to hang on even though he was always at the end and is probably happy that there is no other climb today.
Kung leads the trio on the last kilometers.
Bucciero tries to surprise him and goes early.
Kung is beaten and Allonca did not follow immediately. So Bucciero has quite a gap.
And this way takes the stage win. Huge success for Boeing as one of the CT teams.
Allonca comes in 2nd ahead of Kung. Both can`t be happy with that outcome as they missed on the win.
Zaini wins the sprint of the favourites. In the end only 3'2 behind due to the high pace.
Lowe who still had a gap with 3km to go got caught in the end and couldn`t gain time.
And most important. All GC riders finished together and no rider had to abandon.
