Tour de France - Stage 6
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-1.jpg

On the back of yesterday’s truly awesome hilly stage we have another hilly stage, though this one promises fewer fireworks. The focal point of the stage is the 15.8km long ‘La Meridienne’, which only averages 2.3% with a tough initial part. From the peak of this climb there is a 7.2km long descent to the finish line. In act the hardest parts of the day are the two middle climbs of the stage – the Col de Font de Cere and Col du Prat de Bouc, both of which max out beyond the 10% mark.

With the descent to the finish and a maximum of 38 KOM points on offer the initial break is unsurprisingly popular. Our first attack comes from Dutch all-rounder i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Ricardo Van der Velde.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-2.jpg

Plenty of others look to join him up front. The names looking to strike out a chance at the mountain jersey are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Lars Petter Nordhaug
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Florian Stalder
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Nick Kinney

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Mauro Facci
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Pieter Ghyllebert
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Florian Morizot
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Brent Bookwalter (3 mountain points)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Andre Steensen (3 mountain points)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Stef Clement
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Johan Tschopp
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Koldo Gil

As we get to the first summit of the day the break is still forming so only three o these riders have a gap. The order across the top is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Bookwalter ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Ghyllebert and then i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Steensen. The pace behind is very quick controlling the attacks.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-3.jpg

The high pace claims a lot of victims and 66 riders miss this initial split tanks to the hard work of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Monfort and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Moschella. The only rider in the current top 30 in this dropped group is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Thibaut Pinot, who sits 16th overall. In fact all the GC riders seem well placed at the moment.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-4.jpg

With the gap still fairly small a number of riders try to bridge up to our leading trio:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Ricardo Van der Velde
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Pierre Rolland
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Jonathon Castroviejo
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png John-Lee Augustyn
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Koldo Gil
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Daniel Navarro
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Jakub Danacik
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Teodoro Costagli
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Wilco Kelderman

But of these only two can make it up to create our break of the day – i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Costagli and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kelderman. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Costagli is a fantastic climber, though he lost time yesterday. Perhaps this is the first indication that he may be having a shot at the mountain jersey in this race – he is certainly well suited to it!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-5.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Bookwalter takes the maximum points at the second climb too, and once again i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Ghyllebert is second ahead of i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Steensen. That puts i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Bookwalter on 15 points and puts him in the driver’s seat for wearing the jersey tomorrow. The next two climbs are worth 10 points each and then the final climb is 6 points.

Meanwhile the peloton starts to sit up somewhat and the second dropped group comes back except for a few rather poor puncheurs. After the number of OOT riders yesterday there must surely be some nagging questions in the back of their head.

As the 3rd climb starts the gap is out to 6’51”, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Lotto and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Pearl leading the bunch. As said at the start of the stage this and the next climb are much harder than all the others today.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-6.jpg

Clearly the tough terrain is to the liking of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Costagli as he takes the maximum at the summit, ahead of i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kelderman with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Ghyllebert in third. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Ghyllebert could be one to watch here - though he hasn’t won any of the three climbs, he has certainly been the most consistent.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-7.jpg

The peloton crosses 6’15” later... or at least half of it does! 92 riders have been dropped and it is quite hard to believe it... but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Angel Madrazo is in the second group! He has some domestiques around him but this is certainly not a good sign! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Ratiy and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Duarte are here too but clearly that isn’t the focus of most of the commentary.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-8.jpg

Thankfully i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Rienda Segura and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Erviti manage to bring this second group back just as the fourth categorised climb of the day starts – i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo really has to be more careful about his positioning.

In fact in the next climb a group of 81 riders is dropped and this time i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo makes the split comfortably. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Duarte is the only notable name missing the cut.

Up front i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Bookwalter very narrowly takes the maximum points ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Costagli and then i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kelderman. That puts i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Bookwalter on a total of 27 thanks to his 3 from the break in stage two and it means that it is mathematically impossible for him to be caught in the KOM competition today. The gap back to the peloton with 67km remaining is 4’48”.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-9.jpg

Back in the pack it is mostly i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Pearl working with some help from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Monfort. There aren’t really any sprinters left here except for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Simone Ponzi, though there are plenty of good puncheurs who also have a strong kick here. The only real news on the way down off this penultimate climb is that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Thomas Frei falls.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-10.jpg

But as the road starts to taper off and we get to some flat land again i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Amaël Moinard decides to launch an attack. There is a total of about 37km to go and a gap to the break of 2’44”.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-11.jpg

Several of yesterday’s aggressors now look to bridge up to him – i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Anton, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Brambilla and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Augustyn. While the last of these three couldn’t hold on, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Anton and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Brambilla in fact go past i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Moinard and form a duo ahead of the peloton with a gap of about 1 minute!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-12.jpg

The next attacks come from two Pearl riders – now we can see why they were working so hard earlier. In fact the first of these is their GC leader i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard and behind him is another well-rounded rider i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Kangert.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-13.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Monfort controls the attack of i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard but i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Kangert is allowed to get away. He bridges up to the two others who had just attacked away.

As we hit the final climb, with about 22km remaining i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Moinard and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Augustyn both launch another attack, looking to bridge up to the chase group and then hopefully also the break. The gap is closing and it could all come back together.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-14.jpg

Seeing the race breaking up on this fairly benign climb severa others decide to go for it and amongst them are some big names. The riders giving it a go are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cobo
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Amador
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Kohl
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Velits

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-15.jpg

Everything seems to be happening at this point. Perhaps hearing about all the new attacks behind i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Costagli decides to set off solo. The gaps at the moment are:

41”42”21”
Break--->Gr. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Anton--->Gr. Favourites---> Peloton

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-16.jpg

With all of those favourites in the same group it was never going to get far, so i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic sets off on an attack to gain some time, and he is followed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Velits. Behind this i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Lloret manages to bring back all of the other attacking favourites and even i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Velits is forced to drop back to the peloton as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic sets a fast pace.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-17.jpg

The group of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Anton catches the break of the day, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Costagli still 12” ahead. They are 35” ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic and another 15” up on the bunch.

It is remarkable how aggressive this stage has been as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio now launches another attack. This time i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Amador is the one who controls the attack, and it also results in i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic being reeled in.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-18.jpg

Up front i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Costagli is caught and now it is the turn of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Ghyllebert to go on the attack. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Steensen follows at some distance.

In the pack we get another attack from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cobo, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic but i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin controls it this time. It is interesting to see all of the favourites controlling the attacks themselves – perhaps some of them wish for stronger teams.

With only a couple of kilometres to this summit we get a new attacker – i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi! He has the points jersey to fight for here, as well as the stage win. No one goes with him at first.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-19.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard does in fact try to respond but can’t hold the pace of the Italian. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Ghyllebert gets to the summit solo. The rest of the break has been swallowed up and the gaps over the top are as follow:

8”20”
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Ghyllebert--->i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi--->i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-20.jpg

But 10 seconds later another group comes through and this is quite a serious attack:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Henao
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Pedraza
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Augustyn
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cobo
And of course... i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-21.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Augustyn can’t hold on to this group, clearly hurt by all his work in earlier attacks. The three riders out the front all join up to create a new lead group. The descent begins in earnest and with 5km remaining the gaps are as follows:

12”16”
3 leaders--->Gr. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego--->P (67)

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-22.jpg

The race is brought together by loyal domestique i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Samwel and it looks like we are going to get a greatly reduced bunch sprint. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Monfort, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Pedraza and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Lloret are well placed up the front but most of them will be tired either from attacking or from working all day.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-23.jpg

With 1km to go i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego is leading out the sprint with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi in his wheel.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-24.jpg

With the race leader leading out, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Sagan and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Wyss come through on his sides. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Sagan in particular is looking very quick here!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-25.jpg

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-27.jpg

And i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Simone Ponzi takes a superb victory and with it at least a day in the green jersey!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF6-28.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Sagan has to be content with second place, and certainly this is some good news for his troubled team. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Wyss puts a second i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Wiggle rider on the podium by taking a surprising third place. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Pedraza is even more of a surprise in fourth thanks to his good positioning. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego takes fifth, which means that he is keeping the pressure on in the green jersey competition too. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Velits was another rider near the front who can thank his position for sixth place. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Coppel sprints to seventh with fellow time trialist i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Koren in eighth. Finally i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Valls is ninth and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Simon might feel he could have done better than tenth.

No riders abandon today, which is good news for some. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi’s win today puts him into the green jersey though he will have to watch i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego in the coming stages. Still, consistency is what counts for most and he could theoretically score in most types of stage. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Bookwalter will enjoy his moment in the sun by wearing the mountain jersey, though once again that will likely be lost in the coming stages. There is of course no major change in the GC make up of the race except for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Duarte dropping to 73rd overall.
