Today brings the longest stage of the Tour at a whopping 247.3km! Usually these long stages cutting across country are completely flat but today’s stage brings something different. The finish is actually fairly tough. There are two climbs within the final 7km. The first of these is the 4.1km Rue de Bellac but that is mostly gentle as it only averages 2.5% (though it gets steeper at the top) and then there is a short descent to the final 1.9km long Rue de Fraud, which is about 5% the entire way to the top. At the top lies the finish line. So those climbs are tough but perhaps not tough enough to really deal with all of the sprinters. Here is what the final kilometres look like:

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF4-2.jpg

Our first attack in the morning comes from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Ronan Van Zandbeek. The Dutch rider is a strong rouleur and because his team doesn’t have a sprinter here, this seems like a good opportunity for him to show himself in the biggest race of the year.

The others who are giving it a go today are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Michael Faerk Christensen
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Koldo Gil

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Benoit Vaugrenard
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Mathieu Bernaudeau
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Martin Mortensen
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Olivier Kaisen
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Ramon Sinkeldam
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Ruben Zepuntke
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Pieter Ghyllebert

Of these the following five form our break of the day:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Michael Faerk Christensen
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Florian Stalder
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Lucas Schädlich
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Jan Ghyselinck
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Niki Terpstra

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF4-4.jpg

Of these riders i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Christensen is the best placed, being only 22” down in 5th place. Perhaps he is looking to move up in the overall? Either way, if the break manages to stay away, he would be guaranteed yellow.

The work early on is done by a variety of teams. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Simply Red Bull are here for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Juan Van Heerden. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Pendleton’s are defending yellow, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Wikipedia clearly expect something from i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Matt Goss and finally i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Lotto are either working for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Gerald Ciolek or possibly one of their several puncheurs.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF4-5.jpg

We get to the only interesting feature of the day before the finishing climbs. With 132km remaining the break sprint for the time bonuses and points. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Christensen takes them in a tight sprint ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ghyselinck, with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Terpstra in third. The lead is out to 9’18” but fatigue may start to set in.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF4-6.jpg

With 50km remaining we move on to the final clump of hills that will take us towards the finish. None of them are categorised or even particularly hard. The lead is down to 3’32” and the teams working are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Simply Red Bull, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Puma – SAP and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Wikipedia. Clearly some of the stronger sprinters are feeling that they can take this one out.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF4-7.jpg

The lead is down to 1’03” with 20km remaining and the pace is high. The constant up-and-down nature of the course is taking its toll and we get our first significant crash of hte race. The following five riders go down with 12km to go:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Vadim Ratiy
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Marcel Barth
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Pim Ligthart
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Jaroslav Kulhavy
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Cameron Meyer

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF4-8.jpg

Obviously this spells disaster for wildcard team i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png VolksWagen, who were relying on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Ratiy to provide them with a decent GC spot. Hopefully he won’t be badly injured and can strike out for a stage later.

With the gap down under 30” with 10km to goi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ghyselinck, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Stalder and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Christensen try their chances and put in an attack.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF4-9.jpg

Of course this is just delaying the inevitable and only a couple of kilometres later they are caught by i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Sebastian Minard, setting things up for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Daniele Bennati.

The second last hill starts. It is much more gentle at the start but with about 4km to go to the finishing line Simply Red Bull are swarming near the front. The road ramps up slightly here near the top of the climb. Their sprint train is:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Facci
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Jelloul
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Ciolek
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Impey

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF4-10.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Facci leads over the top and then comes off during the descent, so i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Jelloul leads out onto the final 1.9km climb. Remember that it is about 5% most of the way up.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF4-11.jpg

With 1100 metres to go i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden launches his sprint. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Ciolek are still there with him. He is a better climber than either of them on paper, but has he gone too early?

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF4-12.jpg

These three get a gap over the rest of the sprinters, as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs finds the climb too tough. One man not left behind, however is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi, who puts in a huge acceleration and is coming quickly with 600 metres to go. He still has ground to make up.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF4-13.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss pulls ahead with 400 to the line, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi is still coming quickly.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF4-14.jpg

And just like that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Simone Ponzi takes his first win of the season, and he could not have picked a better occasion!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF4-15.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss takes second, showing for the first time this race that he is amongst the best sprinters. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Ciolek climbs out of his skin to take the final podium place. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden faded to fourth but his team could well still be happy with that. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Impey was unfortunate in choosing the wheel of i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs but still takes a decent fifth. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Oss uses his puncheur skills to take sixth and the same can be said about i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Simon in seventh. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Van Avermaet once more contributes a top ten with his eighth place. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Granjel Cabrera found the hill to tough and can only take ninth while the race leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Faiers shows his strength by taking tenth.

But what’s this? A gap has opened up in the final climb!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF4-16.jpg

And some teams will be unhappy as they see the riders who have lost time:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Janez Brajkovic
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Romain Sicard
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Sergio Henao
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Igor Anton
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Bernhard Kohl
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png David Abal

All up only 63 riders are in the first group today, with the second group losing 1’41”. In the end the crash cost i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Ratiy a total of 6’18”, likely taking him well out of top ten contention. Meanwhile in terms of jerseys obviously there are no changes in yellow, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Wiggins is now the only other i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Pendleton’s rider in the top ten with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi now 11” down. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao managed 12th today to i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati’s 15th and the 2 extra points ensure that the Spaniard will be wearing green tomorrow which once again show what a brilliant race this has been for him.
