Giro del Trentino - Stage 4
SportingNonsense
The final stage, and after Stage 3, it is looking an increasingly tall order for anyone to stop i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Domenico Pozzovivvo from winning this race.

The podium pattern behind him is very close though, between i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taaramae, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Alarcon, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Popovych, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Kritskiy and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Kiserlovski.

The race to Passo Pordoi is probably the 'easiest' of the 3 mountain stages, its just a long day of gradual climbing until the kick up to the summit finish at the end of it.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-0.jpg

There's a nice view for the break of 8 as they build a lead early in the stage.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-1.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Gottfried
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ken_zps45e45b07.png Penasa

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Ospina
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Taciak
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.png Ludvigsson
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Kinoshita
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Chaabane

Penasa won the intermediate sprint, and the break has a good 6 minutes lead with 22km to go. Is it enough? Hard to say - probably not if the peloton really race up to the finish.

And it looks like they will, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taaramae launches an attack!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-2.jpg

We're still barely climbing, so getting away won't be easy. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Alarcon and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Abal cross to the Estonian after i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Kritskiy and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Caruso were unable to.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-3.jpg

Caruso tries again, along with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mcc_zpse0e8a92e.png Vrecer, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Ardila, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Der and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.png Lovkvfist.

But with Vespa going strong, and the gradient just 2/3% theyre just wasting energy here it seems.

No gaps yet, so i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Alarcon tries again.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-4.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taaramae and surprisingly, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mcc_zpse0e8a92e.png Silva, join him - and this time they do have a small gap.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-5.jpg

Up front, the break are into the final 10km and have found the steep gradient. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Montenegro and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ken_zps45e45b07.png Penasa have a small gap.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-6.jpg

Taaramae, Alarcon and Silva are chased down. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Kiserlovski and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.png Lovkvist try, and get nowhere, so Taaramae gives it another go.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-7.jpg

Alarcon goes with him again, but despite being two of the best climbers in the whole division, they seem frustratingly unable to get a gap. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Vespa are down to just Pozzovivvo and Cataldo, but that is enough for them to still control the situation.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-8.jpg

Taaramae and Alarcon's efforts last for 2km, but never really gets anywhere. Upon capture, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Popovych and this time i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Pozzovivvo make a move.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-9.jpg

Once again, nobody goes clear. 4.5km to go and the break still hold a 1'40 lead - Montenegro and Penasa are back with the rest of the group now, after their earlier efforts were chased down. Montenegro remains the most likely winner if they do make it though - being the best climber in there.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Caruso and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Abal now try to get away.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-10.jpg

And now i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Montenegro makes a solo strike for home from the breakaway.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-11.jpg

Abal and Caruso are still trying to get somewhere, joined by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Popovych

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-12.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.png Lovkvist leads the next move - i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taaramae yet again, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Pozzovivvo.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-13.jpg

Not only is nobody getting away, but nobody is getting dropped either. The stage win seems very likely though as they catch the majority of the breakaway - Montenegro remains clear by just 30 seconds.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-14.jpg

They seem to block in Pozzovivvo and Taaramae by where they are in the road - not that those two seemed likely to get a gap - and this opens things up on the other side of the road as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Hollister surge forwards with both Rodrigues and Kiserlovski.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-15.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ken_zps45e45b07.png Scarponi goes with them, as Alarcon tries, but can't seem to keep up. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Bintang's hopes lie with Montenegro then, but his gap is ever reducing.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-16.jpg

Hollister lead the rankings already and this well timed move could see them extend that with Kiserlovski looking to take 2nd overall here. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Rogrigues gives him a strong leadout into the final kilometre, and this time a gap has finally formed.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-17.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Kiserlovski makes his move past Rodrigues but remarkably i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ken_zps45e45b07.png Scarponi is keeping up with him. Montenegro barely clear now.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-18.jpg

And its a very large peloton sprint behind. Some of the best climbers have really disappointed here. Unable to get a gap, and now even a good stage position is slipping away from them.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-19.jpg

Into the lead goes i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Kiserlovski.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-20.jpg

And the Croatian champion wins the stage. Just an extra 5 second time gap is needed on Kritskiy for 2nd overall, and that is certain to happen now.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-24.jpg

Scrarponi just edges out Montenegro for 2nd - that ride for the CT rider will see him leap up into the GC Top 10.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-21.jpg

Pozzovivvo finishes strongly to seal his GC triumph with 4th on the stage. It also gives him just enough points to surpass Meiji's Signorini in the King of the Mountains competition. He also win the Points competition.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-22.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Pellizotti takes 6th ahead of Popovych and Taaramae. That Bintang rider with them is Krasnoperov - Alarcon was nowhere at the end.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdt4-23.jpg

They finish 33 seconds behind Kiserlovski, and with such a large group on the same time, that means Taaramae and Popovych will both miss the podium - Kritskiy taking 3rd despite a quite anonymous climb today.

Only 6th for Alarcon while today's final kilometre saw Rodrigues and Scarponi go up to 7th and 8th, with Abal a poor 9th, and Zsolt Der a very surprising 10th!

If it is any consolation for Alarcon, he is the best young rider by some way, while Vespa are the best team.
