So here we are – the final trip through Paris. This is one of the most iconic stages in the sport’s history and a win here will guarantee a rider a contract for the rest of their life. Daniele Bennati won on the Champs Elysees in 2011 and Raul Granjel Cabrera won here in 2012. Both are here to try to make it two in their career. Only 138 riders have made it this far from the 198 who started out. How will these greatly reduced numbers affect the sprint on the Champs Elysees? The main three teams with key sprinters are down to the following numbers:
Festina – 6 riders
Pokerstars – 5 riders
Puma – 4 riders
None of these teams can match VolksWagen being down to 3 riders. Speaking of that team, they decide to try to send one of their remaining riders ahead in the form of Georg Preidler. They really haven’t been particularly involved in breaks in this race, merely happy to just try to get a few riders through the race.
Other riders looking to attack today are:
Jakub Danacik
Christophe Riblon
Mathieu Sprick
Tim Kennaugh
Ronan Van Zandbeek
Tom Stubbe
Jaroslav Kulhavy
Aidis Kruopis
Brian Vandborg
Roman Kreuziger
Lars Petter Nordhaug
Koldo Gil
Ramon Sinkeldam
We actually get quite a sizable group of riders from this lot creating our break of the day:
Georg Preidler
Jakub Danacik
Christophe Riblon
Mathieu Sprick
Tim Kennaugh
Ronan Van Zandbeek
Tom Stubbe
Aidis Kruopis
Despite their lack of numbers both Puma and Pokerstars can be found on the front. Festina was here earlier too and later they will help once again.
With 53km to go and a lead of 3’19” which is already being eaten into, Preidler leads the race onto that famous cobbled street – the Champs Elysees!
The break are able to look across the road to see the truth of matters – their gap is being eroded right up and down this course. The peloton are determined to get one last sprint for the win today.
With 7.5km to the line Van Goolen has almost caught the break.
Sprick, Kruopis, Kennaugh and Stubbe all attack to try to eke out more of a gap but Rolland ultimately makes the catch and ends their hope with 5.6km to the line. So we will certainly get the final sprint that we have been promised!
All three teams decide to form trains today despite the depleted numbers. Puma start in the best position. Their train is:
Gasparotto
Kvist
Bennati
Impey
On their left, in the second best place is the Pokerstars train:
Clement
Dumoulin
Mohs
Granjel Cabrera
Corioni
Ponzi
And finally on the right, a fair bit behind the other two trains is Festina:
Steurs
Lavoine
Guerao
Vanderbiest
With 2km to go it is clear that Pokerstars have suffered from not having their proper lead-out train left and Mohs is isolated already. Festina have come up a little bit and are now the second best train. Puma, however, are easily ahead.
With 1.6km to the line Kvist is leading out now. This is set up magnificently.
But Lavoine is proving to be the better of the final lead-out riders and he is closing the gap.
With 700 metres to go Bennati and Guerao both launch their sprints. Guerao is in fact slightly in front of the Italian. Vanderbiest is ahead of both on the right and Impey is looking to go around on the left. Mohs is coming up behind.
Guerao is moving faster than Bennati but Vanderbiest on the right still has the lead.
With 200 metres to go Guerao and Vanderbiest are neck-and-neck but Granjel Cabrera and Mohs are on a huge late charge, moving faster than anyone else.
But it is Oscar Guerao who takes an absolutely historic win in Paris on the final day of the 2013 Tour de France for his fourth stage win of the race. This is just the icing on an otherwise perfect cake.
Granjel Cabrera perhaps just left his sprint a moment too late as he takes second place. He only narrowly missed out on back-to-back Champs Elysees stages. Mohs does incredibly well to take third despite the poor effort of his team. Bennati can only muster fourth place and has never looked more like a former champion. Vanderbiest faded to fifth but will be pleased with that no doubt. Corioni takes a strong sixth place. Impey is the one who takes seventh place. Curiously eighth, ninth and tenth are all Simply Red Bull riders – Jelloul, Facci and Cooper.
