The PCT peloton ride out for the final time in 2013.
In the breakaway are two of the most promising riders in the next generation of Americans, Ian Boswell and Joseph Dombrowski.
Also in the move are Jonathon Dufrasnes, Charalampas Kastrantas and Félix Emilio Besada.
50km out, there is a very interesting move from Kai Reus. UPC need to go well to be sure of safety, and can't really do that by waiting for the finish. The Dutch time triallist takes about 18km to cross to the breakaway.
At this stage the break lead by 2 minutes, but that gap is falling with Cisco, Vespa and Vueling working hard. In particular we see Taborre putting in a lot of effort.
The peloton is down to 64, as they move within reach of the breakaway, on this penultimate lap.
Just before the end of the penultimate lap, Lovkvist attacks! He won this race while it was in the ProTour, which remains the Swede's biggest victory.
That move could not be sustained, but now Efimkin launches a powerful effort going up the finishing straight.
LukOil launch their relegation avoidance strategy with Karpets and Iglinski trying to follow. Ben Nasser and Froome also in the mix.
But only Efimkin gets clear, and he joins the breakaway. They take the second section of the main climb for the final time - as we are now on the final lap.
Over the top, a group of just 17 makes the junction to the Efimkin/Reus/Breakaway group.
And these aren't the strongest 17 riders either! A number of team leaders have been caught out on the descent. One of the race favourites Nicolas Roche, Meiji leader Tommy Zaini, Frenchman Jeremy Roy, former winner Thomas Lovkvist, both Lukoil's leaders Karpets and Iglinski all make up part of a 14 man chase group.
Even worse news for Team CSC-Orbea. Their leaders Costa and Barrio are even further back.
Hearing this on race radio, Kai Reus puts in an attack! He made this split thanks to that mid-race attack, and UPC could now outscore CSC.
But Froome tracks the move, and it does not get away. The 24 in this group then are:
Efimkin
Kastrantas
Boswell
Froome
Jiao, Besada
Ben Nasser
Hoogerland
Gautier, Dufrasnes
Reus
Sinkewitz, Schreurs, Lebas
Pellizotti, Dombrowski
Kolobnev
Ginanni, Kelly, Krizek, Bono
Flugel, Kessler, Preidler
But Roche has not given up, and is trying to ride across solo. That is Schreurs just in front of him, who surprisingly has been dropped.
Efimkin leads the race into the final 5km, he needs to be careful not to expend too much energy.
Now Froome in the lead, the final climb is in sight.
Chris Froome opens up the sprint with 1.3km to go. Efimkin, Ginanni, Sinkewitz and Flugel all well placed.
Ginanni, Efimkin and Flugel along with Froome move away from the field as they take the flamme rouge.
It is going to be between Ginanni and Flugel.
Francesco Ginanni wins the Japan Cup!
2nd place for Flugel, with Efimkin 3rd and Froome 4th.
Franco Pellizotti is a big surprise as he emerges in 5th position.
Sinkewitz, Gautier and Ben Nasser follow.
More surprise positions next though, as Irish Vespa domestique Kelly takes 9th, Reus grabs a Top 10, and Boswell is 11th despite being off the front all race. Dombrowski also hung on well for 14th.
Roche caught the group in the final kilometre and manages to salvage 15th place - which is better than Tinkoff's Kolobnev can manage, but probably not enough.
