Tour de France - Stage 16
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF16-1.jpg

Today brings the last stage for the sprinters before Paris and after yesterday’s missed opportunity they will be keen to get a chance today. There are only two categorised climbs out on course, neither of which is particularly difficult and there is a very long 54km from the peak of the second climb to the finish line. We can only hope that this stage is less eventful than the previous one.

Quite a number of riders will want to save themselves for the coming time trial and mountain stages, but there are always riders willing to give it a go in the break. The first such one is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Aidis Kruopis.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF16-2.jpg

The break doesn’t prove too popular today, perhaps not surprisingly. The other riders who try to get away are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Adriano Malori
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Kristof Vandewalle
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Nathan Haas
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Brent Bookwalter
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Jesse Sergent
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Serge Pauwels
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Thomas Frei
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Jan Ghyselinck
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Jakub Danacik
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Dmitri Grabovski

Of these it is the last four who get away and form the break of the day.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF16-3.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ghyselinck rolls over on the fourth category initial climb. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Grabovski and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Janse van Rensburg follow him but no one looks really interested, which isn’t surprising given that few of them have any points at all. The gap is out to 6’04”, which can fill the break with some sort of confidence.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF16-4.jpg

Back in the peloton on the brief descent i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Aasvold falls, but he manages to recover and he gets back into the peloton. He times his crash well because not long after his fall the pace in the bunch increases as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Puma and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Festina all work. Yesterday their lack of domestiques hurt them but they seem determined not to let that affect them today.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF16-5.jpg

Over the second climb of the day it is once again i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ghyselinck who leads. And once again i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Grabovski goes over in second ahead of i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Janse van Rensburg. After reaching a maximum gap of 6’45” earlier the break is now only at 3’45”. It is Rolland and Sorenson doing the majority of the work while the peloton goes up the climb.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF16-6.jpg

The race comes down the descent and it is clear that the pace is high as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Thibaut Pinot, the mountain jersey wearer who has a comfortable lead in that classification, takes a tumble. He looks like he is struggling to get up and... it looks like he has to withdraw from the race! He was looking incredibly good to win the mountain jersey but now a crash claims yet another big name Frenchman.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF16-7.jpg

We power along the flat with the gap coming down, and with just over 10km remaining the gap is at about the 30” mark. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Grabovski decides that the pace isn’t high enough and he sets off alone from the break.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF16-8.jpg

The rest of the break catch up to him with about 6km remaining but they look over their shoulder and the peloton are right there! With 5.5km to the line i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Delage drags the bunch up and it looks like we will get a sprint!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF16-9.jpg

As we get close to the 3km to go mark on train has pulled out a long lead on the others - i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Puma. It is the only one of the three main sprinting teams which is relatively intact after the mountains. Their train is:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Gasparotto
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kvist
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Granjel Cabrera
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF16-10.jpg

Looking back at the other two trains we have on the left:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Steurs
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Lavoine
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Ladagnous

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Vanderbiest is also here, but he manages to pull himself up to the Puma train.

And on the right train we have:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Van Goolen
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dumoulin
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Corioni
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF16-11.jpg

Clearly i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Van Goolen just isn’t cut out for this work as he starts to fall even further behind.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF16-12.jpg

With 1.8km remaining i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kvist hits the front as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Gasparotto goes off. Their lead is still huge over the main threats.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF16-13.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden tries to go for a long one with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Vanderbiest in his wheel.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF16-14.jpg

These two come up and are equal with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kvist up front meanwhile i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Granjel Cabrera launches his sprint. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati is still sitting in the wheel.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF16-15.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati goes with 500 metres to the line but he has ground to make up on i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Vanderbiest and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Granjel Cabrera. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Goss is also showing himself in a rare moment of caring.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF16-16.jpg

This is going to be close between i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Granjel Cabrera.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF16-17.jpg

But i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Daniele Bennati takes the win! His team set him up brilliantly and for once he is capable of finishing this off.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF16-18.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Granjel Cabrera will likely still be happy with his second place. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao came from behind to take the final podium spot and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs also put in a strong final dash for fourth. In fifth place is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi, who recovered after picking the wrong wheel. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Vanderbiest was strong but faded a bit and could only manage sixth. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss takes seventh. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden’s long sprint saw him fade to eighth with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Corioni and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Impey rounding out the top ten.

So the end of the stage passed without major incident, which will be a welcome relief for everyone. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Morizot pulls on the mountain jersey again after i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Pinot’s withdrawal. Guerao is only ten points behind Cunego but has only one more chance to close that compared to Cunego’s three mountain stages. Other than that no major changes to report.
