Today brings the last stage for the sprinters before Paris and after yesterday’s missed opportunity they will be keen to get a chance today. There are only two categorised climbs out on course, neither of which is particularly difficult and there is a very long 54km from the peak of the second climb to the finish line. We can only hope that this stage is less eventful than the previous one.
Quite a number of riders will want to save themselves for the coming time trial and mountain stages, but there are always riders willing to give it a go in the break. The first such one is Aidis Kruopis.
The break doesn’t prove too popular today, perhaps not surprisingly. The other riders who try to get away are:
Adriano Malori
Kristof Vandewalle
Nathan Haas
Brent Bookwalter
Jesse Sergent
Serge Pauwels
Thomas Frei
Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg
Jan Ghyselinck
Jakub Danacik
Dmitri Grabovski
Of these it is the last four who get away and form the break of the day.
Ghyselinck rolls over on the fourth category initial climb. Grabovski and Janse van Rensburg follow him but no one looks really interested, which isn’t surprising given that few of them have any points at all. The gap is out to 6’04”, which can fill the break with some sort of confidence.
Back in the peloton on the brief descent Aasvold falls, but he manages to recover and he gets back into the peloton. He times his crash well because not long after his fall the pace in the bunch increases as Pokerstars, Puma and Festina all work. Yesterday their lack of domestiques hurt them but they seem determined not to let that affect them today.
Over the second climb of the day it is once again Ghyselinck who leads. And once again Grabovski goes over in second ahead of Janse van Rensburg. After reaching a maximum gap of 6’45” earlier the break is now only at 3’45”. It is Rolland and Sorenson doing the majority of the work while the peloton goes up the climb.
The race comes down the descent and it is clear that the pace is high as Thibaut Pinot, the mountain jersey wearer who has a comfortable lead in that classification, takes a tumble. He looks like he is struggling to get up and... it looks like he has to withdraw from the race! He was looking incredibly good to win the mountain jersey but now a crash claims yet another big name Frenchman.
We power along the flat with the gap coming down, and with just over 10km remaining the gap is at about the 30” mark. Grabovski decides that the pace isn’t high enough and he sets off alone from the break.
The rest of the break catch up to him with about 6km remaining but they look over their shoulder and the peloton are right there! With 5.5km to the line Delage drags the bunch up and it looks like we will get a sprint!
As we get close to the 3km to go mark on train has pulled out a long lead on the others - Puma. It is the only one of the three main sprinting teams which is relatively intact after the mountains. Their train is:
Gasparotto
Kvist
Bennati
Granjel Cabrera
Van Heerden
Looking back at the other two trains we have on the left:
Steurs
Lavoine
Guerao
Ponzi
Ladagnous
Vanderbiest is also here, but he manages to pull himself up to the Puma train.
And on the right train we have:
Van Goolen
Dumoulin
Mohs
Corioni
Goss
Clearly Van Goolen just isn’t cut out for this work as he starts to fall even further behind.
With 1.8km remaining Kvist hits the front as Gasparotto goes off. Their lead is still huge over the main threats.
Van Heerden tries to go for a long one with Vanderbiest in his wheel.
These two come up and are equal with Kvist up front meanwhile Granjel Cabrera launches his sprint. Bennati is still sitting in the wheel.
Bennati goes with 500 metres to the line but he has ground to make up on Vanderbiest and Granjel Cabrera. Goss is also showing himself in a rare moment of caring.
This is going to be close between Bennati and Granjel Cabrera.
But Daniele Bennati takes the win! His team set him up brilliantly and for once he is capable of finishing this off.
Granjel Cabrera will likely still be happy with his second place. Guerao came from behind to take the final podium spot and Mohs also put in a strong final dash for fourth. In fifth place is Ponzi, who recovered after picking the wrong wheel. Vanderbiest was strong but faded a bit and could only manage sixth. Goss takes seventh. Van Heerden’s long sprint saw him fade to eighth with Corioni and Impey rounding out the top ten.
So the end of the stage passed without major incident, which will be a welcome relief for everyone. Morizot pulls on the mountain jersey again after Pinot’s withdrawal. Guerao is only ten points behind Cunego but has only one more chance to close that compared to Cunego’s three mountain stages. Other than that no major changes to report.
