A hilly stage should see the first overal contenders coming to the front. About halfway the stage, there is a hard and long climb but a long descent follows. Two shorter hills inside the final 40 km should then create some splits before the run in towards the finish.
Pre race favourites are Dekker, Hoogerland and Mendes. Race leader Bibby should have a good chance aswell. Intresting to see will be how Abal and Keizer handle themselves today.
Unlike the early flat stages, there is a hard fight to get into the break today. Many riders and teams try but it takes 30 kilometres before 6 riders are finally let go.
Brutt, Meier, Rake, Khalmuratov, Camier and Fraile are the names. They start the days first big climb with an advantage of 3 minutes where the Jaguar team is doing the early work.
It's Rake who leads them over the first category hill taking full points. He was in the break on the first stage aswell and was already joint KoM leader with Ilnio.
Khalmuratov and Brutt complete the top 3 in that order.
Talabardon sprints for the last 2 remaining points out of the peloton. Surprisingly, Keizer, Volkswagen's GC leader, is also sprinting for the points.
The peloton is 5 minutes behind at that point.
We're on the small bump before the penultimate hill and Dahlberg initiates an attack. Montaguti, Keizer and Visconti try to follow him. They can create a gap of around 25 seconds on the peloton.
The escapees are stil in front but lost a lot of their advantage during the long descent so the counter attackers join them to form a leading group of 10 on the categorised hill.
The peloton where Teklehaimanot and Lhaisini are chasing is 1'30 behind.
Abal is next to attack out of the peloton. Going alone is not ideal though.
Fraile wins the mountain sprint at the top in front of Rake and Brutt. So Rake still holds a comfortable lead. All 10 escapees are still together.
Abal follows solo 1'20 later. 20 seconds later are Gadret and Hoogerland who attacked away from the peloton in the final kilometre of the climb.
The peloton, only 63 riders left with Ardila Cano only important rider dropped, follows another 15 seconds later which means they are now just under 2 minutes behind the leading 10 with 30 km remaining.
Strong descent from Abal as he joins the leaders at the foot of the final hill.
Situation behind hasn't changed much as Mendes has joined Gadret and Hoogerland as both they and the peloton have come a bit closer.
But the pack is strong and everything is back together at the foot of the final hill.
Not Everything as Keizer and Dahlberg attacked away from the group and are now a leading duo. Dahlberg has troubles following Keizer's pace though.
Hell breaks lose now as Gadret, Hoogerland, Abal, Visconti, Montaguti, Cataldo, Dekker and Mendes now all try to break clear.
The pace in the peloton behind drops but some big names like Popovych, Plaza and race lader Bibby are still in there.
Bibby tries to defend his lead by going alone. He has a lot of ground to make up though.
We're at the top of the final hill and Hoogerland has overtaken Keizer in the lead.
9 men chasing group has formed behind him. Cataldo, Montaguti, Visconti, Keizer, Dahlberg, Abal, Dekker, Gadret and Mendes are the riders here.
Bibby follows alone 1 minute later. 40 seconds later follows a quintet of Tinkoff and Prio riders. Kiryienka, Kolesnikov, Oliveira, Nicacio and Plaza. Popovych is even 20 seconds further behind.
5 kilometres remaining for Hoogerland who hasn't really lost any of his advantage over the chasers.
Cataldo is doing most of the work there though he is the onlyone that has a domestique there in Montaguti.
Popovych brought 3 other riders to the Tinkoff/Prio group to form a group that has to give everything to limit their losses. They don't really make an impression though and can't even come closer to Bibby who is riding alone about 30 seconds in front of them.
Hoogerland can celebrate a great victory for his Swedbank team. He was clearly the strongest today as nobody was able to follow him on the hill and the chasing group couldn't even come closer on the flat run in.
A fast finishing Dekker takes second as he almost closed the gap to the leader. Mendes finishes third. These two clearly had most left sprinting away from their companions.
Montaguti and Visconti complete the top 5. Some gaps were created during the sprint but the jury once again is mild and puts the first 10 riders in the same time as todays winner.
Bibby comes in alone just over a minute behind Hoogerland. He is incredibly lucky here. I suppose the French jury really likes him as he is given the same time as Hoogerland. It seemed like he came in more as 20" behind Dahlberg though.
Really not a good day for Tinkoff, Prio and Metinvest. Popovych, Plaza and Kolesnikov lose 1'30 after reacting to late. They will have to attack tomorrow.
