It is time for the second hill stage of Tropical Amissa Bongo 2014. René Mandri kept his yellow jersey on a challenging course yesterday, but can expect a lot more attacks today! Will he be able to defend his lead? We will find out as the riders now set off on this 108,7 kilometers long stage.
Like yesterday, we have three riders on the move reaching the first intermediate sprint 2'15" ahead of the peloton. Diego Milan leads them over the line in front of Omar Fraile and Federico Rocchetti. All three riders are more than eight minutes behind in the GC making them no threat for La Vie Claire who gladly let them increase their gap.
There are ten mountain points up for grabs on today's stage. None of the breakaway riders has any points before this stage and is of no threat to Formolo's KoM jersey. They still fight for the first five points and it's Fraile winning them. Milan gets three points and Rocchetti one.
The riders reach a short, but steep hill halfway into the race. The RBC-led peloton is going fast enough for some riders to lose contact on the climb. Quickstep-leader Pieter Serry are among those 40 losing contact, and so is Jonathan McEvoy!
Both Quickstep and Karcher sends their riders down to help their captains and quickly reel the peloton in again.
La Vie Claire are solely doing the work in the bunch. With 47,5 kilometers to go, the gap to the breakaway is still more than five minutes. More teams need to start working, if not, the breakaway will stay clear today.
Rocchetti wins the second intermediate sprint ahead of Fraile and Milan.
The gap finally starts to drop with 30 kilometers to go, but with the gap still at 4'45" it's going to be hard for the peloton to catch the escapees.
Interesting development now as Jonathan Bellis attacks out of the peloton! He is followed by none other than race leader René Mandri! They quickly gain 30 seconds, with Jaguar, Magna and Project: Africa now doing the work in the peloton.
Up front, Milan wins the last KoM prize of the day in front of Fraile and Rocchetti. We get the same order on the following intermediate sprint. The breakaway now has 3'20" on Bellis and Mandri and an additional 20 seconds on the peloton as we head into the final 17 kilometers.
We quickly jump back to the peloton where Hassen Ben Nasser is on the move!
He joins Mandri and Bellis in a matter of kilometers, but the peloton is lurking right behind.
And with 12 kilometers to go it is all back together in the peloton. The breakaway is still 2'23" ahead. It looks like today's winner is in that trio!
More drama in the peloton as Shushemoin attacks! He is followed by Ben Nasser, Bellis, Mandri, Ventoso, Van Stayen and Simon.
Things start to happen up the road as well. It's Rocchetti who is first to attack seven kilometers from the finish line!
More attacks in the peleton now as Vastaranta, McEvoy, Rabon, Oss, Soler and Dowsett joins Ben Nasser's group.
Meanwhile, it's looking good for Rocchetti who has 40 seconds on his former breakaway companions. Less than five kilometers to go!
More attacks happen behind the breakaway and there are groups everywhere! Let's try do get an overview of the situation:

Despite having Ventoso up front, it is Team CSC - Orbea who is leading the peloton.
Rocchetti has one kilometer to go. He is going to win this!
Victory for Federico Rocchetti!
Diego Milan wins the sprint for 2nd. Fraile takes third place.
Ben Nasser is first of the favorites 2'09" behind the winner. Vastaranta takes 5th place, followed by Bellis, McEvoy and Van Stayen who loses 13 seconds to the two guys ahead. Shushemoin, Ventoso and Mandri follows, losing an additional 16 seconds in the sprint. Dowsett leads the peloton over the line. Not the best day for him, losing 46" to Hassen Ben Nasser.
