After yesterday’s opening mountain stage we continue the race with a climb to the summit of the Col de Finiels. The climb on its own is a fairly tame 11.5km @ 5.6% but that is not the only climb on the day. In addition to numerous lower category climbs out on course, the Col de Chalsio is tackled right before our final climb That is a gruelling 17.9km with an average of 4.4% but given that there are several false flats and short descents the average gradient is actually probably slightly higher. Here are the profiles for the final climbs:
Note particularly that the final 700 metres of the race is around the 10% mark. Could this spurt see a real difference form amongst the top climbers?
Well there is plenty of racing before we get to find that out. Our first attack of the day comes from Woet Poels.
Other attackers here are the start are:
Omar Fraile
Mikhail Ignatiev
Carlos Oyarzun
Florian Morizot
Brent Bookwalter (24 mountain points)
Marcel Wyss
Mikael Delage
Mauro Facci
Daniel Oss
Matea Kvasina
Thomas Peterson
Jerome Coppel
Samuel Dumoulin
Philip Deignan
Branislav Samoilev
Thomas Frei
Serge Pauwels
Francisco Terciado
Kristjan Koren
Johan Tschopp
Christophe Riblon
Ran Margaliot
Jonathon Castroviejo
Lars Petter Nordhaug
Wilco Kelderman
Simone Ponzi (4 mountain points, points jersey)
As we cross the first summit a number of riders have a decent advantage. The order over the top is Castroviejo in first ahead of Kelderman and then Koren.
These three are joined by several others and we have a really interesting breakaway:
Carlos Oyarzun
Florian Morizot
Jerome Coppel
Simone Ponzi
That’s right the green jersey wearer is in this group! He crashed yesterday but clearly isn’t suffering from it. This is a really high-risk move – if the break stays away then Ponzi will be able to grab some unexpected and highly valuable points before the two upcoming flat stages and also take back some of the time which he lost on GC – he starts the day 12’14” down.
Back in the bunch David Claerebout crashes on the descent before the climb but he just gets back up and doesn’t lose any time. Up front they extend their gap throughout the climb. At the summit Ponzi launches an attack and takes the maximum points on offer, while Morizot and Coppel are happy to just roll over for the remainder. This is an interesting move from Ponzi – with his 4 points it is theoretically possible for him to wear the mountain jersey at the end of the day if he collects all the remaining intermediates and the break stays away. There surely can’t be many situations where the same rider has worn the points and mountain jersey without also being well placed on GC.
Back in the bunch there is another crash and this time it is much more serious – Andrei Amador comes out of the saddle and onto the road. He gets back up and stays in the bunch but he showed yesterday how good his climbing legs are and it would be a shame if he were injured like Henao.
We have a tiny fourth category climb up next and once again Ponzi takes the points. This time Morizot and Koren roll over. The gap is now out to 7’44” with 76km left to ride. It is interesting to see that only Team B&O are working at the moment – everyone else just clearly wants to put the pressure on them.
The next climb, Le Vert, has very generously been given a 2nd category rating. It isn’t particularly steep or long. Either way Ponzi takes the ten points at the summit, with Koren and Oyarzun taking their turns to roll over. Crazily enough the gap has still been rising and over the top it now sits at 9’49”. As if to spite me for commenting that Ponzi isn’t riding for GC in this race, he is only about 2’30” more away from being the provisional leader.
The younger of the two Dumoulins, Tom, falls on the descent. There are clearly still a lot of nerves in the bunch.
Team B&O are still being forced by the other teams to do all the work. With Ponzi that far up the road it is a clever tactic, because B&O really have a terrible team of climbers around the race leader and their time trialists just aren’t up for this job.
As the penultimate climb the Col de Chalsio starts, with 42.4km remaining the gap is at a barely-changed 9’40”. As if realising that things are getting dangerous Grivko and Guldhammer start to relay on the front. This finally injects some much-needed pace into the bunch and the first 85 riders of the race are dropped.
It is interesting to see that both Henao and Amador have made the first cut here. The Colombian still can’t fight for GC but he at least might be slightly better today.
In fact pretty soon the race is reduced to just 59 riders, about a third of the whole peloton. Lots of domestiques are gone but still no GC riders. The gap is slowly coming down and it finally sinks below the 8 minute mark near the top.
Speaking of the top Ponzi once again attacks for the maximum points. Morizot and then Koren roll over behind him. This puts Ponzi in provisional third in the mountain points competition in addition to his green jersey. Whatever happens this has surely been a profitable day on the road in terms of pure ranking points.
But the peloton isn’t restful and with 1km left to his summit we get our first big moves of the day. On the attack are:
Sicard
Anton
Pinot
Brajkovic
Kohl
Augustyn
Brambilla
But this is controlled by Guldhammer, who appears to be having a great day and really benefited from saving his energy earlier. However, if he is working this hard now he might struggle to maintain his own high GC place.
After a short descent we move onto a shortish climb which will in turn lead us to the final descent of the day. The bunch comes up to this climb and Abal launches an attack. Ratiy, Jaramillo and Navarro all look to follow him.
Guldhammer controls this one too. It is clear that the touch paper has been lit and things are only going to get more aggressive from here.
Speaking of attacks, up front Ponzi has decided to set off alone in search of a solo stage win. He has shown the world that he can win sprints, he has shown that he can win on hills and now he wants to show that he can win a mountain stage. He has about 40” on the break with 20km remaining.
Now we get some bad news as we hear that Henao has been dropped. None of his teammates are going to wait for him, which is probably wise. At this point he just has to hope that he gets better by the end of the race and can go on the attack later.
Abal clearly started something on this small uncategorised climb as Schleck now decides that he will launch right before the road turns downhill for the descent.
He gets a 15” gap but then an attack from Madrazo, who clearly wants to bridge up to him, means that the peloton shut things down way too quickly.
Up front the climb of the Col de Finiels starts. Here are the gaps:
34”
5’06”
5’40”
Ponzi
--->
Chasers
--->
P (49)
Showing the same aggression which he showed yesterday Schleck launches another attack almost as soon as the Col de Finiels starts. He pulls out a gap of 30 seconds almost instantly and no one looks to follow him!
The gap sticks for a while and seeing this finally someone decides that they want to attack up to him. Sicard is that man. He is another rider who has been tremendously aggressive here in his home race.
This move is controlled by the ever-present Guldhammer, who is almost the only person working on the front at this point.
Milka just can’t catch any luck this race as now Coppel is dropped by the chase group up front. He isn’t a renowned climber but surely a bit of luck has to go their way at some point. Either way the rest of the group is now 20” behind Ponzi with 5km left.
With 7km left for the peloton Schleck has 35” and seems to be hovering at about that mark. Schleck sits in 8th place at the start of the day so it isn’t surprising that the next attempt to bridge up to him comes from the man in 7th – Intxausti.
Controlling it is the 6th placed rider – surprise package Velits. Schleck’s advantage is pretty constant but it isn’t because the pace behind him is slow – the bunch is down to just 34 riders.
Up front Morizot succeeds in dragging the chase group up to Ponzi... and then he attacks straight around the Italian!
Intxausti’s attack didn’t work earlier but now he starts to pace set to try to drag the rider from Luxembourg in. This reduces the bunch to 22 riders. In here are:
Madrazo, Tenorio, Valls, Lopez Garcia
Cunego, Lloret
Abal, Anton
Kohl, Faiers
Pluchkin
Intxausti
Duarte
Velits
Pedraza
Amador
Brajkovic
Sicard
Costagli
Ratiy
Samwel
Augustyn
Guldhammer has dropped off the back and is in the group behind, leaving the race leader with no teammates around him.
At the head of the race it looks like Morizot’s attack is sticking nicely, as he has 30” on the chasers behind. The gap back to the pack now sits at only 3 minutes.
They weren’t working together before but now Velits and Intxausti are trading turns at the front of the favourites group to try to close the gap to Schleck. It now sits at 25” but is still hovering and not going strongly either way.
The pack reaches the 2km to go mark and suddenly things kick off in a big way as Madrazo launches an attack!
For a moment it looks like he has got away with this but Pluchkin gets up to his back wheel. Meanwhile Schleck catches the former breakaway riders and attacks away again. Morizot is under a minute ahead of him and this could be a chance for a stage win!
Schleck goes under the 1km to go mark and the gap to Morizot is only 45 seconds. Coming up is the steepest part of the climb and then the finish line itself.
Madrazo also launches another attack under the 1km to go banner, as he sprints away from the former break and Pluchkin. He gets a gap on the Moldovan leader! Meanwhile Cunego has finally decided to react and is almost up to the race leader.
Morizot can feel the finish line in front of him. The gap to Schleck is shrinking.
Meanwhile Madrazo’s attack has brought him up to Schleck. They seem to have a small gap over Pluchkin and Cunego!
But one man will be the toast of all France tonight – Florian Morizot, who takes his biggest career win. He is too exhausted to raise his arms, clearly.
Meanwhile it seems that Pluchkin has dug deep enough to get up to Schleck and Madrazo. Cunego juts doesn’t look like his usual self, however.
Madrazo crosses the line in second place, 27” after the stage winner. This will give him 12 valuable bonus seconds. Schleck takes the final podium place and the 8” that go with that, as well as his time gap back to his competitors.
Speaking of time gaps Cunego comes through 38” down on the stage winner... and that 11 second time gap to the three other big name climbers is registered! His job just became that little bit more difficult.
Another 12 seconds later a group of 20 riders comes through with the other GC riders and the remnants of the break. Castroviejo holds on for sixth place and in seventh is Ponzi – even if this wasn’t as good as he might have hoped it is still 9 valuable points and 2 more mountain points... which puts him equal with Pinot in that competition! Not bad for a day in the break. Brajkovic takes eighth as the next of the GC riders. His teammate Koren is ninth and in tenth place is Tenorio.
So let’s have a look at the jerseys now – Pluchkin started the day 20” ahead of Cunego and 32” ahead of Madrazo and now he is 24” ahead of Madrazo and 31” ahead of Cunego. This three way battle will no doubt continue. One rider who clearly wants to be a factor in that fight too is Schleck, who moves into 6th place but also showed that he is arguably the best climber in the race. Ponzi actually loses some group to second place Pluchkin in the points jersey but extends it over the sprinters. Pinot and Ponzi are tied in the mountain classification, as mentioned. It is hard to see any team challenging Santander for the team classification and Madrazo obviously leads the youth category.
