Probably the decisive stage of this tour today, with a difficult Cat.1 climb opening the final up to the Great Wall in Badaling.
The first group riding away consists of Konte, Gougeard, Pibernik and Ciccarese.
They try to hold off the peloton who is frantically chasing a flurry of attacks, but it is to no avail.
By the time the first KoM prize comes up, we do see a 5-man group getting a decent advantage though.
Sousa takes the points ahead of Passeron and Koretzky, Abelouache and Preidler make up the rest of our break.
Interestingly, Sousa and Preidler are two of the only 19 riders within 20 seconds of race leader Zaini!
It's really surprising this group was allowed away, while roughly 5 others without any immediate pursuers were reeled in...
The second KoM is not far, and Passeron wins the Cat.3 from Sousa and Preidler. The good work amongst the breakaway riders saw their advantage go out to 4 minutes already.
Amazing pictures just as they pass the banner though, this is either synchronized swimming without water or everyone's deodorant was stolen from the team hotels overnight!
Behind, Meiji still take it rather easy.
The Cat.1 climb gives us our first fight for the mountain points with Passeron attacking to overtake Sousa for the full points. The Rothaus DS realised the KoM jersey could compensate for Bellis' weaker performance here. That said, we can already announce Van der Schueren will keep his jersey by two points.
Nearly 5 minutes behind, Hoogerland and Dowsett attack as they pass the 1k banner.
Over the top and down the descent, Dowsett couldn't keep Hoogerland's wheel, but Gautier and Efimkin caught up.
Yes, Gautier!
The group has 40 seconds on the bunch, but face nearly 6 minutes of a gap to the BotD. On the other hand, there are still 85 kilometres to go, so everything is possible.
The break closes in on the first sprint, and obviously, only Sousa and Preidler are interested. Preidler is basically the worst sprinter you can imagine, so it's an easy task for Sousa to take the seconds.
Minutes later, the Gautier group couldn't keep the speed that several teams in pursuit could offer.
The second intermediate sprint gives us the same result. Preidler is doing well to keep it rather close, though.
On the flat towards the Great Wall, Vansummeren smells a chance. He takes Wang, Pineau, Efimkin and Hoogerland with him.
They work together pretty well, and until Vespa and Meiji really pick up speed, they only trail the break by 60 seconds while there is a gap of nearly 90 behind!
Soon, the front groups merge, and it's not that the break slowed down to be caught, the middle group accelerated further while the gap between the front 5 and the peloton stayed the same all the way through. 2 minutes now.
10k to go, and the favourites in the bunch see the danger. Froome wants to attack across, Bellis is quick to respond.
Pellizotti and Ginanni catch the train as well, but Zaini struggled to get through the riders in front to chase!
A kilometre later, we can see the new situation.
Froome and Bellis lead Ginanni plus Pellizotti by a bit while Kessler tries to attack out of the Zaini group where Wegmann and Jiao are present as well.
Yes, Kessler! Flügel still did not attack out of the peloton.
Froome and Bellis soon catch the front group where Hoogerland just attacked. Efimkin follows and Vansummeren tries to go as well.
Pineau joins the three riders ahead.
30 seconds down, Abelaouche paces Froome through the 5k banner while Ginanni made it in there as well now.
Anoher 53 seconds further, Zaini finds it hard to close the gaps and sees his leaders jersey slip away!
Zaini works hard at the front and nearly managed to get back just before the uphill sprint starts. Efimkin tries to escape on the horizon.
Vansummeren takes the lead as Efimkin drops all the way through the group, and on the other side of it, group Zaini caught up!
Pineau passes Vansummeren, but the strong trio of Froome, Bellis and Ginanni storms through.
Of those three, only Froome can really challenge Pineau though.
And indeed Froome compensates for the horrible first days and takes it on the line!
Pineau holds on for second while Bellis has to settle for third.
At the back end, we see Preidler will probably be the last rider to receive the same time as the winner while Pellizotti loses time.
So what happened to all the other favourites and GC riders?
Schreurs is the best of the rest just ahead of Rocchetti, but already more than two minutes down. GC hopes lost.
And Flügel? Kessler and Preidler somehow saved the day for VW, but their leader completely messes up this stage and finishes nearly four minutes after Froome alongside Taborre, Costa or Visconti.
