Team Manager Mresuperstar returns for his eighth season with one his strongest squads yet. Yet, for a fourth season he finds himself back in the PCT circuit once again after a brief one-year stint in the top flight.

Despite the relegation, Spanish outfitter Desigual has remained the primary sponsor of squad this season with a bold new marketing shift. Known for its colorful, eye-popping fashion trends, Desigual has taken on a new identity.

Press release statement from the company:

Objects in Selfies are More Flipped than they Appear
In an unprecedented exercise of logic, we turned our logo around to pay tribute to who we are and to truly honour our name.

So, in addition to becoming the first brand in the world to permanently reverse its logo, we are also making our intentions very clear: being more ourselves than ever. A tribute to the rebellious, disruptive and fresh spirit that inspired filmmaker Isabel Coixet to give us the name Desigual in 1984 because we were “not doing the same” thing as everyone else.

An (inverted) move that brings us closer, once again, to fulfilling our dream: living in a world where everyone can be themselves by using their innate creativity as a tool.

The Desigual cycling team carries that vision as we embark on another season.

We aren't doing the same as everyone else. We are going to standout, be recognized and rejoin the Pro Tour because that's where Desigual belongs.

Transfer Window

Dropping down to the PCT circuit means 1,000,000 less in wages. So fat trimming to the roster had to be done and new faces were brought in. After countless hours in the War Room, Manager Mresuperstar emerges with the 2019 Desigual squad.

Riders Released

The following 4 cyclists were let go before the start of the transfer season:

Vincenzo Nibali: The ageing veteran only lasted a season in the Desigual colors. He's shining moment was Stage 8 of the Tour de Suisse. A stunning effort to secure a stage win. One of only two stage wins Desigual managed to get in the Pro Tour last season. His wage demands were too high to even consider keeping.

Nelson Oliveira: With American Daniel Eaton maxing out his potential, the needed for TT specialist Oliveira wasn't worth his wage demands. Like Nibali, Oliveira's stint with the team only lasts one season. His best result last year was a third place on Stage 4 of the Tour of Norway.

Daniel Teklehaimanot: Mountain man Tekle was one of the harder decisions to make. But, the team didn't want to pay a fee coming out of renewals so he had to go. It made more sense to keep Bakhtiyar Kozhatayev around on a cheaper wage. Tekle, following the theme, raced one season with Desigual with his best result being a second place on Stage 6 at Paris-Nice.

Erick Herrera: Fresh off winning the El Salvador RR and TT national champions, we had to give stagiare Herrera the bad news that we couldn't afford giving a full contract for next season. He was disappointed, but we told him we would stay in touch if another team doesn't show any interest during transfers.

Riders Renewed

The following 12 cyclists signed new contracts heading into the transfer season:

Riders Sold

Marcos Altur: The best Spanish cobbler in the world and our once shiny prospect had just started to reach his full potential. As much as we wanted to keep him, Altur wanted to race against the best in the Pro Tour. After broken down talks with Podium Ambition manager TheManxMissile about Altur for years, we finally came to an agreement: 725,000 cash and a British cyclist to be introduced below.

Roman Maksimov: The Russian Rocket is known for his dramatics, on and off the bike. After it seemed like nobody was interested in buying the feisty sprinter, two suitors emerged. A bidding war ensued. When the dust settled, the ENI-MOL cycling team won his services for 300,000. Maksimov wanted a cut of the transfer fee to be forwarded to his PayPal. Mresuperstar laughed and kicked Maksimov out the door, ending an off-and-on six-year relationship with the program.

Riders Bought

Simon Yates: The first British cyclist in program history is a big one. Yates, brought in on the swap with Marcos Altur from Podium Ambition, offers something Desigual didn't have last season: a top quality puncheur. The 27-year-old on 150,000 wages has a chance to track down Tejay Van Garderen for the most wins in program history (11). To make that happen, a bunch of cash was stockpiled to train him this season. Those results will be revealed at a later date.

Free Agents Signed

The following 5 cyclists were signed for the 2019 season:

Magno Nazaret: The steal of the free agency. Yes, the 33-year-old veteran is running out of gas, but to nab this experienced climber for minimum wage (50,000) is absurd. Nazaret will get to lead some races and will be a valuable helper for team leader Justo Tenorio in the mountains.

FLMOHITTSTARESRECCOBSPACCFTDHPL
67797064707773516471726364

Mikel Landa: The 30-year-old Spanish puncheur was a rather late addition for the team after the prices on a couple young talents jumped up. Can't complain when a decent cyclist falls in your lap for 70,000. Landa will mainly be a helper for Yates, but will likely get his own chances as well.

FLMOHITTSTARESRECCOBSPACCFTDHPL
65697857706970506169746757

Miguel Minguez Ayala: Another older, 31, veteran puncheur to aid Yates and Landa. Minguez Ayala signed for minimum wage (50,000).

FLMOHITTSTARESRECCOBSPACCFTDHPL
67737568707270566670577266

Jack Burke: The new shiny prospect for the next two seasons. Burke is the second-ever Canadian to join the program, behind Christian Meier, and is set to become the nation's best stage racer with 77MO/77HIL. But, for now, the level 3.08 cyclist needs to keep improving and growing on a 65,000 wage.

FLMOHITTSTARESRECCOBSPACCFTDHPL
68737367737276556069757067

Erick Herrera: We welcome Erick back with open arms after nobody showed him any interest in the free agency market. The 23-year-old double national champion signed a 10,000 stagiare contract. This is the last season Herrera can be a stagiare, so he is trying to earn a full ride for next season.

Season Goals Breakdown

At this time, with our roster completed for the new season, Mresuperstar laid out the team goals for this upcoming campaign. All of which seem pretty feasible and the team is expecting a better showing than failing all five goals like last season.

We start with the obvious team standings goal.

PCT Team Standings: Top 5

This is the only goal that really matters. Anything but promotion will be a failure.

Volta a Catalunya: Win

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/profiles/c1_cat.jpg

Spending six race days for a C1 event is risk for any stage racer. Hopefully, that thins the field for our main man Justo Tenorio to clean shop. Two hard mountain top finishes and a lengthy TTT is ideal for our Desigual squad.

Kenya Mountain Classic: Top 5

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/profiles/hc_ken.jpg

The true battlegrounds for the best climbers in the PCT circuit. Considering Magno Nazaret finished third in this classic last year for Euskaltel-Elior, Tenorio should be able to nab a Top 5 here in his sleep.

Tour of East Java: Top 5

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/profiles/pthc_eja.jpg

This goal race comes in the first month of the season against the big guns in the PTHC class. Pressure will be on Tenorio to perform early and often. Simon Yate's twin brother Adam Yates won the event last year, maybe we could barrow some winning secrets off of him?

Tour of the Battenkill: Top 10

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/profiles/pthc_bat.jpg

Another PTHC race that we are starting to rethink at the moment. We knew Marcos Altur had a high likelihood of leaving the team, but just in case he stayed this was picked as a goal. Now, with Altur gone, all eyes are on Alexey Tsatevich to step up and lead our cobbles team this year. And hey, last season Tsatevich took 11th in this race after looking after Altur, who suffered and finished 31st.

Very sharp jersey! and love the Sanmarinese NC - almost wish it was the real thing Grin Simon Yates is a great rider, especially trained, and helps make you a very scary team! Tenorio is just unfair - I'm going to all of your goal races and so I'm just hoping I can beat Tsatevitch in Battenkill at least Pfft

Now that's a change! Pfft Indeed an elegant kit, with the added bonus of being easy to spot in the peloton. Beautiful NCs as well. Chapeau hillis!

Let's see what you're going to do with training. Regardless this should be a strong season for you.

@jandal7: Will be interesting to see how Tsatevich preforms without having to look after Altur. I'm hopefully he can handle a team leader role.

@Gustavovskiy: Now seems like a good time for that training reveal.

Training

With sale of Marcos Altur, Desigual was able to collect some funds for some crucial training this season. We had plenty of options to consider with Justo Tenorio and Alexey Tsatevich in their final training years. But we decided to go with the option that gives us the best chance to promote back to the Pro Tour after this season.

Simon Yates

FLMOHITTSTARESRECCOBSPACCFTDHPL
74707768777073527580746471
74707968777073527580746471

+2 Hills. This costly training will make Yates one of the best puncheurs in the peloton when it comes time for a selective sprint finish. The pure puncheurs will have a difficult time shaking Yates off before the finish.

Justo Tenorio

68847680787679595867846879
68847680787679595967846879

+1 Sprint. Better than nothing, and he should still dominate the PCT circuit regardless. At least that's the plan, until Pluchkin ruins everything.

Sadly, I fear that's going to be some very valuable training, which means I can't wish you good luck for promotion. Pfft

You already had a stacked team, and that Yates training just makes it even crazier. Certainly you will be promoting again. Smile

That Yates training Shock

Scorchio
Not an unexpected move with Yates, just one that was feared! Pfft

Plu-bear vs. 'the Tornado' is gonna be a fun sub-plot to watch, think there must be strong potential for quite a lot of calendar overlap, only time will tell.

And yes, I sat watching the clock tick down on Nazaret at minimum wage from a long way out thinking, 'surely not', 'someones gonna bid for sure', etc. One of the steals of the window in my eyes. My own wage cap was committed at the time in FA action on Sepulveda and Gaday, so I was not in a position to move myself without starting to look in danger of being too far over cap without potential to easily swim back to safe waters.

Looks like your days of yo-yoing up and down between divisions are set to continue with a new bounce back up towards the top of the trajectory!

Thats it?....

Spoiler
In all seriousness, I cant say Im looking forward to coming up against Yates. I was going to train him the exact same way. Hill races in PCm18 always come down to a sprint at the end, so he's probably going to be the top puncheur in the PCT, imo.
