Paris - Nice - Stage 7
SportingNonsense
Unusually for the hill stage race at this time of year, there are two individual time trials. Another chance for the specialists? Well there is a testing climb early on, and they won't be so fresh as they were for Stage 1. And of course, there is a lot to play for in the GC positions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-1.jpg

After 50 or so rider, many of the time trial specialists have completed their rides. The standings at the first split (top of hill) and finish do show that there is variance in who rides fastest across each part.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-2.jpg

Kittel leads at this stage, from Sutterlin and a surprising Aydar Zakarin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-3.jpg

Kragh Andersen, Hepburn and Nechita are also up there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-4.jpg

Many riders have been able to beat Kittel at the check but not the finish. Georgian Giorgi Nareklishvili is the first to manage it at both, setting the new best time by 5 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-5.jpg

Lars Boom beats him by a second though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-6.jpg

Two Gazelle riders are close together today, being 87 and 89 in GC, and both put in strong rides. Manuel Boaro becomes the new leader, 3 seconds faster than Boom. Neilson Powless slots in to 5th, level with Kittel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-7.jpg

Yoann Paillot tries to regain the lead for Aegon, but falls one second short.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-8.jpg

Prologue specialists Stoltz and Kemboi failed to trouble the top of the leaderboard.

Giulio Ciccone, Guillaume Martin and Niklas Eg all went into the Top 5 of the Split 1 timings, but couldn't even make it into the Top 15 at the finish.

Generali have Ulissi in GC 14th, Carpenter 17th and Rosskopf 18th going into the day. The American puts in a good ride for 6th at the finish. More than a minute faster than Ulissi will manage, meaning he moves to just 3 seconds behind him - and also now ahead of Van Stayen, who predictably struggled.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-9.jpg

This isn't the day that Mohoric is going to rescue his poor race, and he will drop one spot to 14th overall, and also down to 3rd in the U25 classification that he be rights should have had a clear lead on - with Gidich taking his place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-10.jpg

Into the final dozen then, and here's a reminder of how they stand:
1Simone PonziFablok - Bank BGZ22h41'52
2Romain SicardAir France - KLM+ 30
3Jan BakelantsIndosat Ooredoo - ANZ+ 37
4Sean De BieAegon - Lavazza+ 1'12
5Emanuel BuchmannT-Mobile+ 1'13
6Ian BibbyGazelle+ 1'19
7Rohan DennisBennelong - Mitchelton+ 1'25
8Ignacio Jesus PradoMoser - Sygic+ 1'27
9Tom WirtgenEA Vesuvios.t.
10Edoardo ZardiniAegon - Lavazza+ 1'28
11Patrick KonradGazelle+ 1'31
12Jack BobridgeBennelong - Mitchelton+ 2'09

Coming into the race Bobridge was slated as the best time triallist of the overall contenders, but things have not played out as expected. He isn't the best of the top 12 at this stage, and finds himself further afield too.

Unfortunately, this isn't the day for him to recover that either. He barely breaks the Top 30 at the finish, 20 seconds behind Boaro. Disappointing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-11.jpg

He only ends up gaining 14 seonds on Konrad, so both remain placed as they were.

Those placed 10th-6th are not the riders we expected to be there - let's take a look at their stats as we await their finishes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-11b.jpg

Zardini surprises, and goes 12th for now, only 11 seconds off Boaro. It's not likely to boost his position though, as the next four riders have not only beaten him at the first checkpoint, but taken 4 of the 5 fastest times of the day so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-12.jpg

And yes, Wirtgen comes in with a new fastest time! 4 seconds faster than Boaro.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-13.jpg

Prado goes 2nd, ordinarily a great ride, but 3 seconds loss does mean he will be dropping behind Wirtgen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-14.jpg

Rohan Dennis could be in for a stage win opportunity here, but no, he is also 3 seconds slower than Wirtgen, and also going to fall just behind him overall.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-15.jpg

Ian Bibby is putting in a supreme showing in a ProTour stage race here, having done it so often in PCT in the past. And he becomes the new leader, 2 seconds faster than Wirtgen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-16.jpg

Now the final 5. While Sicard takes aim at Ponzi's lead, the others are more looking over their shoulders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-17.jpg

Buchmann will give us a real clue of whether Ponzi can hold on to his lead. And it may be looking tricky, as Buchmann comes in 42 seconds behind Bibby. The German will drop all the way down to 10th in GC, even behind Zardini.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-18.jpg

De Bie is in for 21st, and a 20 second loss. It sees him go behind Wirtgen, Dennis and Prado - albeit on the same time as the Mexican. So 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-19.jpg

Bakelants has more to play with, but also needs it, as he sheds 50 seconds to Bibby today - which does mean the Brit has taken his podium place. It could have been much worse though. He holds on to 4th, but 5 seconds slower would have put him 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-20.jpg

Romain Sicard looks strong. 3 seconds up on Bibby at the check point. He loses ground in the rest of the ride, but not much - and records the fastest time of the day! 1 second faster, for his second stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-21.jpg

Ponzi is unable to use the climb to limit his losses, already 19 seconds down at the split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn7-22.jpg

And by the finish that's out to 42 seconds. He has lost the race lead by 12 seconds. This race will be decided in Nice then. Sicard can become the first French winner in MG history, but will have to hold off Ponzi on the Italian's terrain. And will the unlikely Top 10 all stay intact, or can some of the other puncheurs finally fight back?

Worth noting that the Team Classification also changed hands today. Aegon gained 29 seconds on Bennelong, to move into an 8 second lead over them.
