Classique Pico Basile
Kentaurus
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/profiles/c1_pic.jpg

Our start will take us away from the sea, and quickly uphill where no riders showed the strength make a move.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb1.png

The first real attack comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov who makes his move on as soon as the downhill starts.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb2.png

His attack wouldn't last long though as he would be caught at the base of the 2nd climb and we would have to start all over looking for a new breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb3.png

Our new and lasting breakaway would finally form on the second climb of the day. Teammates pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Reguigui and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Antunes with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Hatsuyama, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Hirschlein, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Affonso, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Eyob, and our original hopeful, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb4.png

The peloton quickly gets organized however, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Desigual and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Campari/Asahi taking control.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb5.png

Our breakaway has survived into the town of Malabo where we take a couple laps before the climb up Pico Basile. 3'22" ahead of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb6.png

Our helicopter watches them turn into town for the second time, still holding on, but now only 2'33" ahead of the Desigual led peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb7.png

We wondered why the helicopter had left the lead group, and it was for this! Carlsburg has dropped back for a small second group one minute behind the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Garby struggled on the first lap and has work to do to catch back up. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Costagli is also in this group explaining the Rakuten presence.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb8.png

The climb up Pico Basile starts, and the breakaway is mearly holding on at this point as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Barta, shameless plug an Azteca loanee, pulls the pelton within striking range.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb9.png

We get our first attacks out of the breakaway, led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Affonso with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Hatsuyama on his wheel, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Eyob.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb10.png

There are some new colors coming to the front of the peloton with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk's black tie kits moving their man Dominik Nerz into position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb11.png

The last of the breakaway as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Hatsuyama goes from front to back. Belerusian champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Koshevoy leading the peloton for ISA-Hexacta.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb12.png

Only 47 riders remain at this point with 16 kilometers still to climb

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb13.png

Oh no! That is the jersey of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Seboka champion of Lesotho the first of the favorites who can't keep the pace. Tough ride after both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Garby and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Costagli have rejoined the lead group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb14.png

With 12km left to go, 8th place finisher from last year pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Nazaret comes to the front to set the tempo but not sure where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Tenorio is!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb15.png

Thankfully a shot from our helicopter crew was able to spot him, near the back of the group however.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb16.png

Now our first major attack! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Penasa launches with just over 10km left to climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb17.png

The peloton is kept in line and closes down Penasa with some terrific work from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Martinez.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb18.png

A long line of riders now as good climbers are being dropped with every stroke of the pedal. ISA-Hexacta has no sympathy as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Ji takes over in front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb19.png

6.5km left to go, and Dan Martin hits the front, reducing us down to 13 riders in the lead group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Martinpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Jipcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Tenoriopcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Uran

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Penasa

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb20.png

Falling behind we quickly see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Marquez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Nerz. The small group behind containing, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Roglic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Valls, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Abal.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb21.png

Fireworks again as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Penasa who had only been sitting at the back to recover launches. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Martin quick to his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb22.png

No response from the remaining group! The duo are now riding away with 5km remaining to the summit!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb23.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Penasa runs out of gas, an effort too much. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Martin now takes off on his own, and leading the small group back is now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Tenorio.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb24.png

Leading the small group might have been a reach, more like riding his own race would have been better as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Tenorio goes alone to chase pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Martin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb25.png

Kilometers tick off very slowly now, as 5 has gone to 4, 3, and now 2 kilometers left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb26.png

Two has become one as the pair use everything left in this dual.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb27.png

Just one kilomter too far for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Martin as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Tenorio is able to cruise across the line with his rival completely out of gas.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb28.png

Behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Uran finishes the podium. While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Choi just edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Machado for 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019//Races/C1/CPB/cpb29.png

Time gaps loom large as riders have given their all up this challenging climb.
