Ras Taiteann
The final stage in Ireland, will take place on what will be the most undulated route of the tour, but that said still a very flat profile especially the final 40 km and we must again expect a mass sprint.
With only 20” separating top 10, many riders have the podium within reach, Danilo Kupfernagel leading, but Gerald Ciolek at +4, Dan Holloway and Jacopo Guarnieri at +5 all with a great shot at the overall GC.
With 15°C and only a few clouds it is going to be a beautiful day, we will see winds up to 7 km/h on the route but very little wind close to the finish.
The Race
I. Oliveira opens the race in front of Agostini, soon after Al Murawwi, Sobrero and Quintero catch up, behind them also Curry have laid a little distance to the pack.
Curry did not make it, now he will be chasing with teammate Simpson in the pack.
The breakaway can’t get above 30”, but they get to the early points sprint first. I. Oliveira in front of Quintero and Agostini
Al Murawwi and Sobrero lost some distance over the sprint, from the bunch Atkins bridge to the duo, but the pace is extremely high and all three are reeled back in.
Won’t be long before also I. Oliveira can no longer keep up and hang between Quintero, Agostini and the pack.
Albert who attack from the pack reach and passes I. Oliveira, to join the leading duo, soon Lauk attacks from the peloton to join I. Oliveira
But the pack still won’t rest after more than 50 intense km and they are just 34” behind the stage leaders.
Finally when we get to the more undulated part of the race, the peloton settle down and the 5 riders unite to form the breakaway of the day getting a little more than 2’30”, but the peloton is not willing to give away a stage win in this tight race and they start to cut it down before the 2nd points sprint.
The sprint won by I. Oliveira in front of Quintero and Agostini.
60 km to go, 1’27”
The pack is now under a minute behind, most of the workload executed by first Bercz, Bille, Burke, lately Neuman, Bercz, Burke and Groselj
The breakaway still with about 30” passing the late intermediate sprint, won by Quintero in front of Lauk and Albert
I. Oliveira with some distance to the fast pack, Agostini already caught.
Petrie-Armstrong decides to get some TV time and why not, having a fresh set of legs he will be the last to get caught, the breakaway is over with 12.5 km left. It was Gallego Martin and Sweeck delivering the final kill.
From there first Broers and later Naud leads the pack up to 6km left.
From there it is Volvo and Iberia, but then we see Kreder moving forward fast with a Kraftwerk train for Cavendish, now the leading top sprinter in about 7th position.
4 km left, most of the top sprinters including Ahlstrand quite close to the front, worst placed from top 10 Mohs in the group distanced with a few meters behind the leading group. Degenkolb and Zabel not well place either in the rear end of the “first” group.
A little less than 3 km left, Kreder has now taken the Kraftwerk train to the front, Vanderbiest at Cavendish’s wheel.
At their left it is Roelandts with Ahlstrand and Maksimov clued.
Not too far behind Vanderbiest, a train with Boeckmans, Guarnieri and Ciolek
At their left side race leader Kupfernagel, and further left Iberia for Degenkolb
A little further back Holloway seems a little blocked by domestics falling back, Mohs and even worse Zabel further back and not in this picture.
1.8 km left
There have been a short hesitation in the leading group making it possible for Mohs and Zabel to mix in with the other sprinters at the back of the group, Kupfernagel, Ciolek, Guarnieri.
Up front Kreder have swung of and now Willwohl with an impressive kick attempting to create a gap for Cavendish now with Ahlstrand clued
Not too far behind Ahlstrand Vanderbiest leading the larger group with Boeckmans and Degenkolb. At their left Maksimov with Holloway
First under the red kite Willwohl leading Cavendish, they got a huge gap down to Ahlstrand
Another substantial gap down to Merino Criado leading the larger group for Degenkolb, at each sides of Degenkolb, Vanderbiest and Boeckmans with Maksimov and Holloway. Behind Degenkolb Ciolek.
500 meters left for Willwohl soon to be overtaken by his team leader Cavendish, as it looks now no one will be able to challenge Cavendish for this stage win.
At the same time further back Ahlstrand still got a good gap down to four riders almost side by side, at the inside going into the corner Vanderbiest at his left Merino Criado, Degenkolb and Boeckmans taking the long route through the corner.
Behind them from right to left Ciolek, Maksimov and Holloway
In the group a little further back Guarnieri in front of Kupfernagel, Mohs and Zabel
Less than 100 meters left for Cavendish, behind him looks like it will be close between teammate Willwohl and Ahlstrand for 2nd.
Nothing seems to be decided in the next chunk of 6 riders, they still got a long way to the line.
Cavendish wins the last stage of Ras Taiteann, in front of Ahlstrand and Willwohl takes the last podium a great day for Kraftwerk Man Machine
Boeckmans 4th Vanderbiest 5th Degenkolb 6th Ciolek 7th Holloway 8th Maksimov 9th.
Guarnieri rounds of top 10 in front of Mohs and Zabel
With this result Kraftwerk’s veteran Mark Cavendish won this years edition of Ras Taiteann in front of Gerald Ciolek and Danilo Kupfernagel took the last podium, to become the huge surprise of the year.
Mark Cavendish and Gerald Ciolek shares the points lead, with Dan Holloway 3rd.
Willi Willwohl won the U25, making this race a huge success for Kraftwerk Man Machine, Ivo Oliveira 2nd and Karl Patrick Lauk 3rd
Iberia - Team Degenkolb won the team classification.
