Ras Tailteann stage 3
Tamijo
Ras Taiteann

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S3/000.jpg

The final stage in Ireland, will take place on what will be the most undulated route of the tour, but that said still a very flat profile especially the final 40 km and we must again expect a mass sprint.
With only 20” separating top 10, many riders have the podium within reach, Danilo Kupfernagel leading, but Gerald Ciolek at +4, Dan Holloway and Jacopo Guarnieri at +5 all with a great shot at the overall GC.

With 15°C and only a few clouds it is going to be a beautiful day, we will see winds up to 7 km/h on the route but very little wind close to the finish.

The Race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png I. Oliveira opens the race in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Agostini, soon after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Al Murawwi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Sobrero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Quintero catch up, behind them also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Curry have laid a little distance to the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S3/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Curry did not make it, now he will be chasing with teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Simpson in the pack.

The breakaway can’t get above 30”, but they get to the early points sprint first. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png I. Oliveira in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Quintero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Agostini

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S3/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Al Murawwi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Sobrero lost some distance over the sprint, from the bunch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Atkins bridge to the duo, but the pace is extremely high and all three are reeled back in.

Won’t be long before also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png I. Oliveira can no longer keep up and hang between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Quintero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Agostini and the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Albert who attack from the pack reach and passes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png I. Oliveira, to join the leading duo, soon pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Lauk attacks from the peloton to join pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png I. Oliveira

But the pack still won’t rest after more than 50 intense km and they are just 34” behind the stage leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S3/03.jpg

Finally when we get to the more undulated part of the race, the peloton settle down and the 5 riders unite to form the breakaway of the day getting a little more than 2’30”, but the peloton is not willing to give away a stage win in this tight race and they start to cut it down before the 2nd points sprint.

The sprint won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png I. Oliveira in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Quintero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Agostini.

60 km to go, 1’27”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S3/04.jpg

The pack is now under a minute behind, most of the workload executed by first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Bercz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Bille, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Burke, lately pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Neuman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Bercz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Burke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Groselj

The breakaway still with about 30” passing the late intermediate sprint, won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Quintero in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Lauk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Albert

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png I. Oliveira with some distance to the fast pack, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Agostini already caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S3/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Petrie-Armstrong decides to get some TV time and why not, having a fresh set of legs he will be the last to get caught, the breakaway is over with 12.5 km left. It was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Gallego Martin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Sweeck delivering the final kill.

From there first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Broers and later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Naud leads the pack up to 6km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S3/06.jpg

From there it is Volvo and Iberia, but then we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Kreder moving forward fast with a Kraftwerk train for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish, now the leading top sprinter in about 7th position.
4 km left, most of the top sprinters including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand quite close to the front, worst placed from top 10 pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Mohs in the group distanced with a few meters behind the leading group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel not well place either in the rear end of the “first” group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S3/07.jpg

A little less than 3 km left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Kreder has now taken the Kraftwerk train to the front, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest at Cavendish’s wheel.

At their left it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Roelandts with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Maksimov clued.

Not too far behind Vanderbiest, a train with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Boeckmans, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Ciolek

At their left side race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel, and further left Iberia for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Degenkolb

A little further back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway seems a little blocked by domestics falling back, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Mohs and even worse pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel further back and not in this picture.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S3/08.jpg

1.8 km left
There have been a short hesitation in the leading group making it possible for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Mohs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel to mix in with the other sprinters at the back of the group, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Ciolek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri.

Up front pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Kreder have swung of and now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl with an impressive kick attempting to create a gap for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish now with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand clued

Not too far behind Ahlstrand pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest leading the larger group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Boeckmans and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Degenkolb. At their left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Maksimov with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S3/09.jpg

First under the red kite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl leading pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish, they got a huge gap down to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand

Another substantial gap down to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Merino Criado leading the larger group for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Degenkolb, at each sides of Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Boeckmans with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Maksimov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway. Behind Degenkolb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Ciolek.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S3/10.jpg

500 meters left for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl soon to be overtaken by his team leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish, as it looks now no one will be able to challenge Cavendish for this stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S3/11.jpg

At the same time further back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand still got a good gap down to four riders almost side by side, at the inside going into the corner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest at his left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Merino Criado, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Boeckmans taking the long route through the corner.

Behind them from right to left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Ciolek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Maksimov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway

In the group a little further back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Mohs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S3/12.jpg

Less than 100 meters left for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish, behind him looks like it will be close between teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand for 2nd.

Nothing seems to be decided in the next chunk of 6 riders, they still got a long way to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S3/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish wins the last stage of Ras Taiteann, in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl takes the last podium a great day for Kraftwerk Man Machine

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S3/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Boeckmans 4th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest 5th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Degenkolb 6th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Ciolek 7th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway 8th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Maksimov 9th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S3/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri rounds of top 10 in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Mohs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S3/16.jpg

With this result Kraftwerk’s veteran pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Mark Cavendish won this years edition of Ras Taiteann in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Gerald Ciolek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Danilo Kupfernagel took the last podium, to become the huge surprise of the year.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Mark Cavendish and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Gerald Ciolek shares the points lead, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Dan Holloway 3rd.
