Stage 6
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/00.jpg

After yesterday failed to differentiate between the favorites, today’s another chance to attack for anyone who doesn’t have the time trialing skills. The climbs aren’t very steep today so it will be interesting to see if the puncheurs actually reign supreme today or of it’s more one for the stoic climbers. A secondary focus is the polkadots jersey with a ton of mountain points to collect today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/02.jpg

After the early action settled down, we were left with a 16 men group that began the first climb of the day together. The riders are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensenpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Haaspcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Shirotapcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Nonaka

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Spanopoulospcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Polittpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Galievpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kebede
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Oleipcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Robovpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Smitpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov

A few riders with KoM ambitions are here: Dieteren (36 points), Ivanov (32), Azman (16) and Smit (12) will challenge pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Serry (80), as we have 8x 16 points atop these climbs. The Belgian tried to get into the group as well, but probably because he’s only 32 seconds behind the GC lead, he wasn’t allowed to go. Then again, Azman is only 44 seconds behind overall leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kadri as the best-placed in this group, with everyone else more than five minutes behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen takes the most points at the first KoM sprint. None of the aforementioned riders take any. The group has around 4’30 on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman takes the second one, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov in fourth place. We’ll check back in with provisional classification after the next few climbs …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/05.jpg

… but we also see the first significant splits in the group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Politt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Haas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Nonaka, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Dieteren and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Jensen, who had attacked late and spent a few kilometers alone chasing leave a pretty significant gap. They would make it back again on the descent, but it could be a first sign of how things will develop later.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/07.jpg

Pretty consistently, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Robov have been the strongest on the previous climbs. And this is reflected in the mountain classification, where the SPAR rider is now within 20 points of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Serry, 10 points ahead of Ivanov:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/08.jpg

Meanwhile, the peloton has picked up the pace. They’re only 2 minutes behind the group and caught one of them already: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Politt dropped on the prior climb and fell back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/09.jpg

The tempo has caused a few riders to drop from the peloton, and in what has to be described as a shock, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Koretzky is among them and finds himself two minutes behind the peloton! Can he make it back?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/10.jpg

Further drama ensues as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Kirsch has a puncture! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Gastauer, one of today’s top favorites, drops back to help him get back to the front in this group which also includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Koretzky.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/11.jpg

Another few groups behind we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Froome but also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Serry! The latter is the only Top 30 riders besides Koretzky who’s been dropped from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Robov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman have established a small gap over the sixth classified climb. With this, Azman has taken the lead in the mountain classification:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/14.jpg

Robov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov – who catches up to them quickly again – are technically still within reach, but they’d need to make it to the next sprints in the first place. The peloton is slowly catching up to more and more of the dropping escapees, although they’re still close to two minutes behind the leaders.

A quick update on the previously mentioned riders who’d fallen behind: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Kirsch made it to the group directly behind the peloton, he might be able to make it back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Koretzky is another minute behind, but still ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Gastauer, who spent a lot of energy in the pursuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/15.jpg

Big split in the peloton! On the wrong side of it is GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kadri, but also the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Lutsenko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Boswell, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Gidich.

The group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Kirsch and now also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Koretzky is two minutes behind this second one, so it seems like we’ll have to say goodbye to them in terms of both the stage win and the GC. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Dowsett, also among the favorites for today, is with them as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/16.jpg

The pace is brutal now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Chamorro (with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Ben Nasser) also drops.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kebede is getting caught and only the leading trio is some 20 to 30 seconds ahead of the peloton – if you can call it that. What we have is a group of 14 riders around the top favorites. They are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Borgespcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Trofimovpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Figueiredopcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Benootpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Wellens
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Kuduspcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinierpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Galtapcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Roglicpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Keinath
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Hagenpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Ignatenkopcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagterpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla

Except for Borges and Benoot, who are more than two minutes back, and Slagter (+ 44s), all of these riders are within 20 seconds of each other. A group of 12 including yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kadri is 45 seconds behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman is the final rider getting caught, but he’s most likely rewarded with the victory in the mountain classification. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Benoot is setting the pace, trying to prevent anyone from catching up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/20.jpg

But he’s not successful. As they cross the penultimate categorized climb (the finish not included), a number of riders including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kadri have caught up, increasing the size of the group to 30 with another 10 about to close the gap as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/22.jpg

And so 40 riders are together, 15 kilometers from the finish. Of those relevant for the GC (the Top 27 that are within 44 seconds of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kadri’s lead), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Boswell, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Serry and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Kirsch are the only ones missing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/23.jpg

In a bid for not only the stage win but maybe the overall win, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Hagen attacks! No one reacts right away …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/24.jpg

… but the first rider is being dropped: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Cataford can’t keep up anymore. As a premier time trialist, he could fight for an absolute top position if he can catch up again, but with Hagen’s acceleration, that seems less likely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Hagen leads the group by more than half a minute. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov attacked, trying to follow him or maybe just try to get a few more mountain points. He takes 12 of them, but he needs another 10 at the finish – which would mean third place. Not too realistic, I’m afraid.

Meanwhile, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kadri himself who paces the chasing group, where a few more riders drop. No one in GC contention, but a few strong puncheurs like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Paulinho and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Borges.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/26.jpg

What an absolute beast this man is! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kadri attacks in pursuit of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Hagen! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Kudus is right there with him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/28.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Hagen enters the final 3,5 uphill kilometers with a bit more than 20 seconds on the yellow jersey-led group behind him, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kadri's attack wasn't successful. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Duolingo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Carrefour are positioned towards the front. There are still 28 men in this group. Who’ll try to create some time gaps?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/29.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Hagen has another acceleration in him and increases his lead to 40 seconds. This is looking well for him, if he hasn’t overdone it. Every second is valuable ahead of tomorrow’s time trial!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/30.jpg

With 1,5 kilometers to go for them, the group begins to stretch under the pace set by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Wellens.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Kudus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Ignatenko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Keinath and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Roglic are in the second row behind them, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Galta, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Figueiredo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/31.jpg

As the road flattens out toward the finish, we’re looking at another bunch sprint, however only for second place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Lutsenko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Jensen made their way to the front, a small gap behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/32.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Roglic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier are leading the pack as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Hagen is struggling! He’ll probably make it to the line, but he might not get the time gap!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/33.jpg

He does take the stage win! A courageous effort is rewarded, however he indeed does not get a time gap. With an advance of at one point almost a minute in the final kilometers, this might be a bit disappointing. He still takes the yellow jersey, but it’s a tough task to defend it tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Roglic are still fighting for at least bonus seconds, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Figueiredo is going strong, trying to go past them!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/34.jpg

But he doesn’t quite get there, fourth for him ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Keinath …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/35.jpg

… who just barely edges out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Kudus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Wellens. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Lutsenko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagter finish next.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/36.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Ignatenko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Galta and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Yates are still counted within Hagen’s time, then the gaps begin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Trofimov is the first to get hit with 37 seconds, a group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Bevin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Gidich is timed at 52 seconds. Everyone else is more than a minute behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E6/37.jpg

After a few incredible days, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kadri comes to the line beaten. He’s a terrible time trialist and would have lost a lot tomorrow anyway, but maybe he'd hoped for another wonder. Still, hopefully he can appreciate his accomplishments and not be too frustrated.

So now, after six stages that looked pretty challenging on paper, we head into the time trial with 11 riders seperated only by bonus seconds. A lot can happen on 24 kilometers, so expect a shakeup of the GC, and also expect some very close calls – more than a few of these riders are very close in terms of their time trialing ability.

There’s one overwhelming favorite for the overall win now, though, and it’s the same name as before the race even started: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier.
