Race Report, Stage 1

Welcome to Stage 1 of the Tour du Maroc. Today we cover 194k of pretty flat terrain between Beli Mellal and the famous town of Marrakech. Given the flat terrain and the fresh peloton it seems like a sprint finish is on the cards today. On the way we have 3 sprint points each carrying a 6 second bonus.

The stage favorites show up as:

Soon after the start we have our first attack with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Barthe followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Tennant, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Scotson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Bernal and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Peng.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S1/01.jpg

Other riders continue to show interest with Iberia-Degenkolb (who already have 2 in the break) and Podium Ambition both heavily represented but nobody else can get a gap. With 175km to go the gap is up to 3’04 and the original 5 will be our break of the day.

With 140k to go the gap maxes out at 4’30 and Farfetch and Tinkoff begin to ride. With 122km to go the break contests the first sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Peng takes it ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Barthe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Tennant.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S1/02.jpg

With 100km to go the lead is down to 3’05. Indosat has joined Tinkoff and Farfetch on the front. Only 3 riders are working, they are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Tizza, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Schachmann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kulikovskiy.

With 81 km to go the lead is still around 3 minutes, at the second sprint it is again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Peng ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Scotson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Barthe.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S1/03.jpg

Soon after the 3 chasing teams add more riders and with 50km to go the lead is down to just over 2 minutes. At the final sprint pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Peng completes the hat trick ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Barthe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Scotson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S1/04.jpg

With 26k to go the break has 1’14. Working hard on the front are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Zakarin
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png De Souza
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Shalunov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Tizza
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Ssabagwanya
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kulikovskiy

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S1/05.jpg

With 20k to go we start the mandatory last-ditch attacks with a dig from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Tennant but he gets brought back and under the 10k banner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Barthe tries his luck followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Scotson. Barthe has 42 seconds on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S1/06.jpg

As we approach 5k the break still holding out as the same few teams are working. The spinters are gathering up front but not many bring teammates. In the break pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Peng has jumped ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Barthe. He has 32 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S1/07.jpg

With 3.3 km to go for the break pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Peng, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Barthe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Bernal have 24 seconds. It doesn’t look like they will make it. Behind the sprint trains are forming. On the left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Schachmann pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Speirs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss. On the right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Foliforov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov. Behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Turgis protecting pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande. Then most of the other top sprinters: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Drapac, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Rowe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Lavoine. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Nizzolo is out of it as are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Thwaites and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Santos who seem to be leaving things to their teammates.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S1/08.jpg

There is also a split after the first 50 riders but it seems likely that will close before the finish. 2.4 km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Turgis has launchd with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande on his wheel. It is a long way for only 1 lead out rider. On the left the Inodsat train is still whole with Drapac latched on for Minions. In the middle Tinkoff have lost Foliforov, ISA’s Contreras has chosen Samolenkov’s wheel and on the right Rowe seems to be leading out AKA and Lavoine.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S1/09.jpg

As they hit the red kite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande has launched but he has been caught on the left by the Indosat and Tinkoff trains who both still have a lead out. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Rowe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Lavoine are trying to make up ground on the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S1/10.jpg

With 0.7km pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande forges into the lead. On his left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Drapac have just launched from behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Spiers. The Irish champion is fading against the barriers as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov looks for room with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras on his wheel. Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Rowe is fading as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Lavoine look to make up ground.

The next set of riders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Turgis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Baska and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Markus

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S1/11.jpg

0.4 to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov looks strongest as he hits full speed. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande has launched too early and is fading and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Drapac doesn’t seem to have it today either. Coming fastest but a little further back are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S1/12.jpg

100 meters to go and it is between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen. Samolenkov is in front but the other two are moving faster.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S1/13.jpg

Meters from the line pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras has caught pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen will have to settle for third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S1/14.jpg

The Argentinian takes it for ISA-Hexacta.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S1/15.jpg

A great sprint from well back earns pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Baska 4th, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Lavoine, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Drapac and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Markus.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S1/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Spiers hangs on for 10th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras will get all the jerseys except the team jersey which goes to Indosat. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Peng is 2nd on the GC based on his sprint bonuses. There are no time gaps except time bonuses.
