Stage 1
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/P.jpg

The first stage is pan-flat. No KoM points, just two intermediate sprints to entice the breakaway riders, and if everything goes as expected, we’ll see a good ol’ bunch sprint at the finish line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Lo Cicero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri are highest on the list of favorites, but their competition is tough and strong in numbers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/02.jpg

We can skip ahead a little because the first riders who attacked immediately got away without much of a hassle. Interestingly, two teams have two riders each in this group of five: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Muhlberger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Hugentobler, who go first and second over the line at the first intermediate sprint, represent Sauber, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Biermans are there for Lierse. The fifth man, and third at that intermediate sprint, is ISA’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Feng. Waeytens is a curious rider here, as he’s considered among the favorites for the hill stage in two days. They have a modest advance of 2 minutes at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/03.jpg

A couple of teams make sure it stays that way. Chief among them, curiously, are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Iberia and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Duolingo, both without any real sprinter here. What makes more sense: Both Valio (for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen) and cycleYorkshire (for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger) are also in on the chase with two men each.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Muhlberger wins the second sprint as well, this time ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens with his teammate third. Those 12 bonus seconds will have him in the Top 3 of the GC at the end of the day and, if nothing crazy happens, in the white jersey. Their gap as a group is down to under a minute already though, with exactly 50 kilometers left to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/06.jpg

Again it’s Iberia and Duolingo who lead the peloton as they catch the escapees. No late efforts from a somewhat uninspiring breakaway today, this was probably simply too early to warrant extra expended energy. More than 35 kilometers remain, will anything of note happen and maybe prevent a sprint?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/07.jpg

Nope. Nothing. As soon as the break was back in the pack, the sprinter teams took over, most notable pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Campari and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Delveaux. They set a very high pace to give no one any silly notions and so the stage is set for the sprinters to shine.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/09.jpg

This is shaping up to be a very weird sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri in his number one jersey, and despite all of his team’s effort, is in the middle of the pack with just 5 kilometers to go. The other big favorite, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Lo Cicero, is only a few positions further ahead with his Europcar entourage. And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Boeckmans is also close by. And that’s not even all of it:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/10.jpg

A gap has opened, splitting the peloton pretty evenly in half. It doesn’t seem likely to cause any time gaps at the end of the day, but some of the major sprinters are in that back half, like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Vantomme, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Houle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Reinhardt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Lavoine!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/11.jpg

Who’s even at the front, you ask? Well, mainly a lot of helpers. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Mareczko leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Bonifazio on the right side, their leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Van Asbroeck is further back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Tzortzakis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Colbrelli have a nice train going for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip, next to them are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Hayakawa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Itami, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Salleh.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/12.jpg

As we move closer to the 3 kilometer mark, Campari and Europcar work hard to bring pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Boeckmans and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Lo Cicero back into contention. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Wippert has found pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Salleh’s wheel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Van Asbroeck also trying to claw his way back to the front. Andorra sets pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip up beautifully, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio in his slipstream. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri still nowhere to be seen, no trace of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger either.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/13.jpg

Greek champ pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Tzortzakis launches the sprint with 2 kilometers to go. Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Itami, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Salleh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Wippert.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Boeckmans and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Lo Cicero still with two men ahead of them. They’re not out of it yet, but there’s not much time left. None of the Delveaux riders is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Selig, by the way, he’s with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri in 50th-ish position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/14.jpg

It’s a long-winded S curve towards the finish line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Colbrelli takes over just before the flamme rouge, let’s hope that’s not too early. Campari and Europcar are all over the place now, possibly trapping pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Wippert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Van Asbroeck behind them, who are the furthest back sprinters still in contention.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio is the first to leave the Andorra train and goes past pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Itami and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel behind him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Lo Cicero somehow broke free on the left side, now on par with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Salleh. Not looking great for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Boeckmans.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/16.jpg

Three men on the front line, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel is very fast behind them as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Lo Cicero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Salleh are chasing furiously.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Wippert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Van Asbroeck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Boeckmans next, fighting to get into the Top 5 at least.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel tries to get to the front, on the left it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Lo Cicero who’s incredibly fast, can he make the comeback?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio is still in the lead as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Lo Cicero seems to be running out of steam, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel is still fighting!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/20.jpg

But the Carlsberg rider can raise his arms in celebration! Perfect timing gives him the win and the yellow jersey, a great start for the home team here! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel finishes second ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Itami. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip did not have the legs to reward his team’s effort and ends up fifth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S1/21.jpg

Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Salleh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Wippert takes seventh ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Van Asbroeck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Boeckmans. Charging to the line there is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Selig, who actually just manages to get into the final Top 10 spot. Still, a huge disappointment for Delveaux as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri finishes 16th.

But they are not the only sprinter’s team to be very frustrated today. We also have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger in 33rd place, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest 42nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen 92nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Houle 102nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Lavoine 116th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Vantomme 124th!
