Deutschland Tour - Stage 5
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/mg19_deutschland_05_PCM0152.jpg

33 KoM points today, which is 20 more than the actual leader has right now. So definitely a fight for this competition.

GC wise Coppel still looking best with Dempster and Hepburn being a few seconds behind but not having it easy to gain those as it`s another sprinter stage.

Coquard still looking for his first win while Ahlstrand and Cavendish already have one each. Ewan as well underperforming so far clearly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/mg19_deutschland_05_PCM0156.jpg

Brockhoff tried to join the early attack but apparently had no energy left or was not allowed to go.
He still tries to chase but the group of 5 seems to be allowed to go now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Dlamini
being the last three still in front after the first climb with Gjolberg a bit behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/mg19_deutschland_05_PCM0164.jpg

On the 2nd climb we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Arashiro attacking and the gap to the front it not big.
A bit behind him also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Sinkeldam, KoM leader after stage 1 and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Fernandes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/mg19_deutschland_05_PCM0168.jpg

And in fact those three form the new breakaway trio as the others were not only caught by those but also the peloton did catch group Lammertink.

Sinkeldam on 10 and Arashiro on 9 points not far from the leaders before this stage and actually just passing them after the Cat.4.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/mg19_deutschland_05_PCM0175.jpg

Sinkeldam wants the jersey back and being the strongest puncheur in this group, he seems able to do so. Penultimate KoM sprint and he takes his 27th point with Arashiro at 22, Brockhoff at 13. Fernandes only collecting 9 points yet on todays stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/mg19_deutschland_05_PCM0178.jpg

While 6 points were taken by Fernandes at the final KoM, Sinkeldam only had to stay within the group to win it, even if Arashiro had taken the last one. By coming over the line in 2nd, the Carlsberg rider indeed wins the KoM ranking of the 2020 Deutschland Tour. Important points in the relegation fight.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/mg19_deutschland_05_PCM0180.jpg

With 11km to go the sprinter teams led by Festina catching them and starting final preperations for the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/mg19_deutschland_05_PCM0182.jpg

Volvo again having the strongest train.
Halvorsen - Roelandts - Ahlstrand with a small gap.

Then Barbier - Weber - Coquard.

Ewan, Salleh, Vanderbiest, Vesely, Afewerki best placed of the remaining solo sprinters.

Zabel and Cavendish a bit block in ~20th position. Would be a bad day for the Brit to take a day off with the points ranking being so close to win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/mg19_deutschland_05_PCM0190.jpg

The winner very likely will come from this group of sprinters.
Festina having closed the gap and in fact going into the lead now with Ahlstrand having lost a bit to his leadout.

Salleh winning the fight for Coquard`s wheel with Ewan, Vesely, Afewerki and Vanderbiest behind.

Zabel, Van Poppel, Kip and Guardini lining up behind the French but would need a powerful boost to attack those. Cavendish also not that far but still not in a good position at all.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/mg19_deutschland_05_PCM0196.jpg

600m and Ahlstrand vs Coquard in the first position.
Then Salleh closely ahead of Vesely, Ewan with Vanderbiest on the left and Afewerki not having the speed to follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/mg19_deutschland_05_PCM0202.jpg

Ahlstrand takes another stage! Big one for the Swede.

Coquard in 2nd while Afewerki somehow found fresh energy to pass the others for 3rd!

Ewan, Vanderbiest, Vesely and Salleh follow.

Cavendish in 12th only means he drops down to 3rd in the points beaten by Ahlstrand and also Coquard.

GC goes to Coppel ahead of Dempster and Hepburn, Youth going to Politt after this impressive time trial and teams could become vital for Repsol, who are sitting dangerously low in the rankings as well.
