Stage 2
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/P.jpg

Many top sprinters had a very disappointing opening stage yesterday and today is their first of two chances to make it right. Big names in that category include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger, among others.

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio will try to defend his yellow jersey to keep it one more day. But last year, this was the stage where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Ignatiev won with a late attack, so anything is on the table. Also, there are up to 10 points available at the mountain sprints - a lot to look forward to!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Yechezkel attacks as soon as the race is underway. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Stenersen follows a few meters behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/02.jpg

Iberia did a lot of work chasing yesterday (for reasons only they know), they seem to want to avoid that today as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Gougeard leads the next wave of escapees. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Dowsett and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Bru catch his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/03.jpg

But they are still not the only ones. Another 8 riders try to get away, some prominent riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Debesay, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens again and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Barrio. But will the peloton let such a big group get away?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/04.jpg

Predictably, no. The sprinter teams band together and bring the latter 11 riders back. Only the original duo remains ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/05.jpg

A few kilometers later, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Mano launches another attack, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Feng and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kämna.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/06.jpg

And alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Yechezkel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Stenersen, they form the break of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Feng had been in the break yesterday already, where he collected two bonus seconds and he adds another four at the first intermediate sprint, which pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Yechezkel wins in pretty dominant fashion. They have a gap of two minutes to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/08.jpg

It’s a bit of a surprise that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Mano, one of the better puncheurs in this group, is the first to crack as they tackle the first mountain sprint. But he shouldered most of the responsibility in the chase of that trio and maybe just spent too much energy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/09.jpg

The group breaks into pieces as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Stenersen collects five points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kämna and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Feng. If they want to have a chance to make it to the second mountain sprint, which is still 78 kilometers away, they better get back together soon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/10.jpg

But that’s not happening. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Mano and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Yechezkel are caught by the peloton soon after. Further ahead, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Stenersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kämna have found each other while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Feng is still struggling to catch up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/11.jpg

With the peloton already in sight, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kämna gives it one last go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Stenersen falls back into the pack - as did pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Feng shortly before -, but the German still has some energy left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/13.jpg

He is caught just behind the second intermediate sprint as the sprinters fight for the remaining points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Lo Cicero takes four, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Itami two.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Campari and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Delveaux once again set a very high pace and the peloton is stretched thin as it moves towards the second mountain sprint. We’ve seen yesterday how big positioning can be, and that climb will only magnify that today. Teams should better move their leaders to the front now already as tiny splits continue to open and close within seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/16.jpg

Some splits are not that tiny anymore! A group of 39 has established a gap over another 22 riders, with almost a minute to the larger peloton behind them. Sprinters in that first group include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Boeckmans and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Lo Cicero, notably most of the top time trialists are in good position as well.

The second group has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Reinhardt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Salleh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Itami, everyone else is in the peloton. The ascent will probably allow these groups to reunite, but it could break just as easily again afterwards.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/17.jpg

Campari and Delveaux continue making the pace, which leads to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Naud, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Van der Haar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri taking the KoM points. The latter really wants avoid the positioning blunder from yesterday, it seem. 17 kilometers left to go. Naud takes over the Polkadots.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/19.jpg

Heading into the finale, we have 59 riders in the front group with at least a minute on everyone else. They will fight for the stage win. Most sprinters actually made it to this group, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio, although some like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Reinhardt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Santos linger at the back of it, not looking very fresh.

Notable absentees include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Houle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Lavoine, all of whom struggled yesterday, too. The major time trialists are in the first group as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/20.jpg

There aren’t any strong leadouts in this group either, so the sprint preperations are a bit messy. We’re still 3 kilometers from the finish, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Boeckmans are already in positions 3 and 4, only one teammate left each.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel (in green) is in great position just behind the Delveaux “train”, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio follows him, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Salleh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Lo Cicero next to each other. One row further behind are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Van Asbroeck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Itami in their slipstream.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/21.jpg

The routing to the finish is absolutely absurd. A long corner leads to the flamme rouge, followed by an insane chicane. Positioning should be key, which favors the riders at the front. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Moschetti remains ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Boeckmans, who are now side by side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/22.jpg

Into the final left corner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio comes up beside those two. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Fraile all of a sudden is in the mix, while the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Van Asbroeck, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Itami and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Wippert have fallen far behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri leads the bunch towards the line! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Salleh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel trying to get to the front!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel is the fastest on the left side, does pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Boeckmans have anything left in the tank? Can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri hold on?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/25.jpg

Yes! The Delveaux leader redeems himself and rewards his team for all the work! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Boeckmans justifies Campari’s efforts and finishes second. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel only manages third, but gets the yellow jersey as a pretty great consolation price! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio finishes fifth, he loses yellow but keeps the green jersey by one point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Lo Cicero repeats his sixth place ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Coppel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Fraile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Cornu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Durbridge, which really says something about this weird sprint. Now it’s time to wait for the time gaps.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S2/27.jpg

And we actually get some. Only 52 riders are within the same time as the winner. The biggest name losing 1’11 is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Viennet, along with some fringe GC contenders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kuboki, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Vandousselaere, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Eaton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda.

Even worse off are the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Haugard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Li, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Fominykh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Gallopin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Verona, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Koren, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Pokälä, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Nepomnyachsniy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Trofimov, who lose 2’29. Puncheurs like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Dowsett, who are favorites for tomorrow, are also in this last group.
