Stage 2
Many top sprinters had a very disappointing opening stage yesterday and today is their first of two chances to make it right. Big names in that category include Guarnieri, Vanderbiest and Enger, among others.
Meanwhile, Appollonio will try to defend his yellow jersey to keep it one more day. But last year, this was the stage where Ignatiev won with a late attack, so anything is on the table. Also, there are up to 10 points available at the mountain sprints - a lot to look forward to!
Yechezkel attacks as soon as the race is underway. Stenersen follows a few meters behind him.
Iberia did a lot of work chasing yesterday (for reasons only they know), they seem to want to avoid that today as Gougeard leads the next wave of escapees. Dowsett and Bru catch his wheel.
But they are still not the only ones. Another 8 riders try to get away, some prominent riders like Debesay, Waeytens again and Barrio. But will the peloton let such a big group get away?
Predictably, no. The sprinter teams band together and bring the latter 11 riders back. Only the original duo remains ahead.
A few kilometers later, Mano launches another attack, followed by Feng and Kämna.
And alongside Yechezkel and Stenersen, they form the break of the day. Feng had been in the break yesterday already, where he collected two bonus seconds and he adds another four at the first intermediate sprint, which Yechezkel wins in pretty dominant fashion. They have a gap of two minutes to the peloton.
It’s a bit of a surprise that Mano, one of the better puncheurs in this group, is the first to crack as they tackle the first mountain sprint. But he shouldered most of the responsibility in the chase of that trio and maybe just spent too much energy.
The group breaks into pieces as Stenersen collects five points ahead of Kämna and Feng. If they want to have a chance to make it to the second mountain sprint, which is still 78 kilometers away, they better get back together soon.
But that’s not happening. Mano and Yechezkel are caught by the peloton soon after. Further ahead, Stenersen and Kämna have found each other while Feng is still struggling to catch up.
With the peloton already in sight, Kämna gives it one last go. Stenersen falls back into the pack - as did Feng shortly before -, but the German still has some energy left.
He is caught just behind the second intermediate sprint as the sprinters fight for the remaining points. Lo Cicero takes four, Itami two.
Campari and Delveaux once again set a very high pace and the peloton is stretched thin as it moves towards the second mountain sprint. We’ve seen yesterday how big positioning can be, and that climb will only magnify that today. Teams should better move their leaders to the front now already as tiny splits continue to open and close within seconds.
Some splits are not that tiny anymore! A group of 39 has established a gap over another 22 riders, with almost a minute to the larger peloton behind them. Sprinters in that first group include Guarnieri, Boeckmans and Lo Cicero, notably most of the top time trialists are in good position as well.
The second group has Reinhardt, Zabel, Salleh and Itami, everyone else is in the peloton. The ascent will probably allow these groups to reunite, but it could break just as easily again afterwards.
Campari and Delveaux continue making the pace, which leads to Naud, Van der Haar and Guarnieri taking the KoM points. The latter really wants avoid the positioning blunder from yesterday, it seem. 17 kilometers left to go. Naud takes over the Polkadots.
Heading into the finale, we have 59 riders in the front group with at least a minute on everyone else. They will fight for the stage win. Most sprinters actually made it to this group, including Appollonio, although some like Reinhardt and Santos linger at the back of it, not looking very fresh.
Notable absentees include Vanderbiest, Manninen, Houle, Enger and Lavoine, all of whom struggled yesterday, too. The major time trialists are in the first group as well.
There aren’t any strong leadouts in this group either, so the sprint preperations are a bit messy. We’re still 3 kilometers from the finish, but Guarnieri and Boeckmans are already in positions 3 and 4, only one teammate left each.
Zabel (in green) is in great position just behind the Delveaux “train”, Appollonio follows him, then Salleh and Lo Cicero next to each other. One row further behind are Van Asbroeck and Kip, Itami in their slipstream.
The routing to the finish is absolutely absurd. A long corner leads to the flamme rouge, followed by an insane chicane. Positioning should be key, which favors the riders at the front. Only Moschetti remains ahead of Guarnieri and Boeckmans, who are now side by side.
Into the final left corner, Appollonio comes up beside those two. Fraile all of a sudden is in the mix, while the likes of Van Asbroeck, Itami and Wippert have fallen far behind.
Guarnieri leads the bunch towards the line! Salleh and Zabel trying to get to the front!
Zabel is the fastest on the left side, does Boeckmans have anything left in the tank? Can Guarnieri hold on?
Yes! The Delveaux leader redeems himself and rewards his team for all the work! Boeckmans justifies Campari’s efforts and finishes second. Zabel only manages third, but gets the yellow jersey as a pretty great consolation price! Appollonio finishes fifth, he loses yellow but keeps the green jersey by one point.
Lo Cicero repeats his sixth place ahead of Coppel, Fraile, Cornu and Durbridge, which really says something about this weird sprint. Now it’s time to wait for the time gaps.
And we actually get some. Only 52 riders are within the same time as the winner. The biggest name losing 1’11 is Viennet, along with some fringe GC contenders like Kuboki, Vandousselaere, Eaton and Sepulveda.
Even worse off are the likes of Haugard, Li, Fominykh, Gallopin, Verona, Koren, Martin, Pokälä, Nepomnyachsniy and Trofimov, who lose 2’29. Puncheurs like Claeys, Waeytens and Dowsett, who are favorites for tomorrow, are also in this last group.
