Race Report, Stage 4

Stage 4 of the Tour du Maroc takes us 144 km from Rabat to Meknes. Rabat is the capital of Morocco although it is only the 7th largest city by population. Today’s stage is very gently uphill all the way but it should be one for the sprinters. There is one category 3 climb as well as 3 sprint points.

The fast, early climbs yesterday really hit some of the sprinters and we lost 3 of our main sprinters to the time cut. So the stage favorites includes some lower tier riders today. The big question will be how many teams are still interested in chasing. Indosat, Tinkoff and Farfetch did most of the work on stage 1 and their sprinters are all still around, but they also have some GC ambitions, particularly Farfetch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/fav.jpg

The first to attack in the streets of Rabat are from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Nych, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Bridges and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Rosas. GIGI has emptied out so the patrons can watch the riders go by.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/01.jpg

There is a short climb 10km from the start and as we hit the bottom of the climb those 3 have been joined by 2 more with 3 more riders bridging across. Others are still trying to attack from the peloton so the situation remains fluid.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/02.jpg

Halfway up the climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Thwaites goes to the front, it isn’t clear if he is trying to bridge to the breakaway or close it down, either way strange riding from the cycleYorkshire sprinter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/03.jpg

Over the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Thwaites relents having failed to reach the break and having only clawed back 1 rider. But Repsol are still chasing with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Herrada. The hill has reshuffled the break. The front 3 are now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Plucinski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Bester and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Nych. They have 20 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Areruya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Bridges, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Fiorelli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Rosas. That quartet have another 29 seconds on the peloton

Not much sprinting at the first sprint point with 123 km to go because they are all still flat out. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Thwaites and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Herrada along with riders from Indosat and ISA-Hexacta have continued to try and get away but the peloton won’t let them go. Their efforts do bring back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Fiorelli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Rosas. And Carlberg is still interested in chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/04.jpg

Carlsberg with help from Grieg and Swisslion track down pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Areruya and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Bridges leaving the break at just the front 3 who currently have 55 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/05.jpg

Meanwhile all this chasing has split the pack, 81 riders are 1’37 back. Riders on the wrong side include both of Volvo’s leaders pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Faglum Karlsson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Anacona as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Lavoine, Kulczyk’s sprinter. Those teams are chasing.

5km later and with 113km to go in the race the same teams are on the front, the 3 leaders are doing well to keep their 1-minute advantage. The 81 dropped riders are still 1’28 back.

Finally with 103 km to go and the gap down to 30 seconds the 3 chasing teams make their move as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Vanspeybrouck, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Peng and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Seibeb attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/06.jpg

95km to go and as they pass the 2nd sprint and the peloton has finally let the breakaway go, their lead is 2’24. Exhausted from the chase pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Plucinski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Bester from the original break have been dropped. They are 29 seconds behind. They might still be able to recover and get back to the front. At this point, the only one of the original attackers still at the front of the race is the very first attacker, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Nych.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/07.jpg

With the pace slowing the peloton is back in one piece. With 90km to go the two dropped breakaway riders get back to the front so we have a group of six. It will be interesting to see if all this effort to be in the break is worth it. The lead is 2’36 and the six escapees are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Vanspeybrouck
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Peng
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Seibeb
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Plucinski
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Bester
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Nych

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Seibeb is closest on the GC at 6’20.

With 70km to go the break rolls through the 3rd sprint point. Farfetch, Indosat and Tinkoff are chasing to set up a sprint and have the lead back down to 2’20.

The break has reaches the bottom of the today’s only climb with 43km to go. Their lead is 2’09. The climb is 2.5 km at 5.3%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/08.jpg

At the top none of these riders are interested in KOM points so they contiue to take turns. Their lead is down to 1’52.

With 30km to go the break has 1’30 on the group behind. That group is led by Tinkoff who are having trouble making further inroads into the lead but are causing some stress in the peloton which has been splitting and reforming

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/09.jpg

Riding for Tinkoff are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Shalunov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Vlasov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Zakarin

20km to go for the peloton the lead is still 1’20. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Yates is working for Farfetch with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande on his wheel. It seems like the sprinters are running out of domestiques

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/10.jpg

With 15km to go the lead is back to 1’32 because the chase has been inconsistent but for the first time some other teams are helping: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Mraouni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Krizek are on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/11.jpg

In the break the riders are suffering as well with only some of them taking turns. With 10km to go things appear to have turned in favor of the breakaway. Nobody is willing to work in the peloton and the lead is up to 1’53.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/12.jpg

With 5km to go the lead goes up to 2’13. The breakaway will be fighting for the stage win. The sprint skills of all the riders are similar with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Peng probably the best. But they are all tired and 3 of the riders have been riding hard since the opening kilometers.

With just over 1k to go the sprint opens, all of them were on the edge already, the winner is likely to be the last one to hit the wall. Their lead is over 2 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/13.jpg

700 meters to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Peng doesn’t seem to have a sprint in him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Nych is moving fastest on the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/14.jpg

400 meters to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Nych as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Seibeb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Bester are out of gas. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Vanspeybrouck hits the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/15.jpg

It is a slow motion sprint now but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Vanspeybrouck has a clear lead and just 200 meters to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/16.jpg

He gets the win. A deserved win for Carlsberg after the blow of losing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen yesterday. They did the bulk of the chasing to put pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Vanspeybrouck in the break and in making the race hard they were likely responsible for the failure of the sprint teams.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/17.jpg

The order behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Vanspeybrouck is:
2nd – pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Plucinski
3rd - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Nych
4th - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Seibeb
5th - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Bester
6th - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Peng
Great riding by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Nych he jumped from the peloton within the first 2 km.

Behind the sprinters sprint it out for the minor placings. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov leads them under the 1k banner. That is along way to be on the front. Behind him we have
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Nizzolo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Markus
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Redecker
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Baska
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras
Plus pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov who just finished his lead out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/18.jpg

Sure enough pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov can’t hold the lead and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande gets 7th. cycleYorkshire might be wishing they had saved pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Thwaites for the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S4/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Nizzolo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Markus complete the top 10.

All the major riders finish 1’30 behind the breakaway. There are no changes in the jerseys or the GC although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Peng is now second in the points competition.
