Paris - Nice - Stage 4
SportingNonsense
Stage 4 is the first hill stage of the race but the route doesn't offer much real opportunity for time gaps. Bigger climbs early on, but just a couple of smaller climbs later on, at the 12-8km to go mark. If any selection is made, a group sprint still seems likely. So it would feel like a Van Stayen stage, but then Stage 3 was very much that, and it did not turn out that way.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-1.jpg

After a couple of days of big attacks, today only Phelan tried for it - and to his surprise, found himself out alone.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-2.jpg

An easy an opportunity to take the KoM jersey as you could ask for then. Not even attacks behind for the other points, just those relaying getting in the money.

So Katrasnik is into second just through that. Aegon inefficiently shared the points around, with Paillot and Vesely taking 12 points to move alongside yesterday's leader Lammertink.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-3.jpg

There was more interest in the sprint at least. Manninen taking 2nd place, with Kemboi beating Van Stayen for 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-4.jpg

Team Puma - SAP decided to commit to bringing back Phelan, for some reason.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-5.jpg

It almost allowed a captured before the 2nd sprint, but the Aussie clings on by the smallest of margins, with Kemboi firing through for 2nd - again beating Van Stayen, who at least picks up the 2 seconds this time. The surprising Repsol rider is Svab.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-6.jpg

Festina and Isostar take over, taking the race through the finish line for the first time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-7.jpg

The first of the two climbs is the last of the KoM points. 1km from the summit, McCarthy attacks! He lost time on Stage 2, as did Koretzky who follows. Van Stayen too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-7b.jpg

De Bie and Mohoric also attacking, but Koretzky is strongest and clearly takes the 6 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-8.jpg

De Bie looking on a mission as he pursues the Frenchman

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-9.jpg

Onto Climb 2 and the slightly surprising presence of Nooytens and Hamza leading the peloton and closing the gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-10.jpg

It looks like Gautier and Bakelants are building up an attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-11.jpg

But actually it is Mohoric who jumps away, joining De Bie and Koretzky who clung on to a lead, and offering his downhill expertise to keep them in the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-12.jpg

Now we have Guardini chasing! Yes, 63 hill sprinter Guardini. And he is almost sprinting too, as he looks to close the gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-13.jpg

Hamza takes over, with Manakov and Baska following him. That gap is almost gone now, with the finish line coming into view.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-14.jpg

Inspite of these names leading the peloton, there has been a selection of 45. And missing is a rider who this stage surely suited - Ulissi. He's just behind race leader Kemboi. There's not much of a gap, so it could be salvaged, but a stage placing ain't happening.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-15.jpg

Holding on, holding on. Koretzky, De Bie and Mohoric still have a gap, and now Koretzky opens the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-16.jpg

He pulls the gap up from 12 to 17 seconds into the final kilometre, and this is surely a fight for the stage now - and maybe a gap?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-17.jpg

Hamza, Manakov, Baska, Nooytens, Becis, Guardini, Stoltz and Dzamastagic are front of pack, with Ponzi and Van Stayen the foremost GC riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-18.jpg

Mohoric can't keep the pace of Koretzky, but De Bie is giving it a go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-19.jpg

And bam! Sean De Bie canters away to win Stage 4!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-20.jpg

Koretzky does take 2nd, holding off Mohoric. The clock says 13 seconds, will that be enough for the commissaires today?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-21.jpg

Guardini looked capable of fighting for 4th but didn't keep fighting to the line, and Van Stayen just manages to edge past Baska and Manakov, with Ponzi 7th, then Bobridge, Bakelants and Koch. McCarthy and Sicard making it into the Top 20.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-22.jpg

Ulissi is reliance on the kindness of others here - and it is De Bie's teammate Vesely who fronts this group - minimising the gap to those ahead. Kemboi there too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/PN/pn4-23.jpg

And what do we gets? No gaps. At all. For the entire field.

It's the stage win and up to 2nd overall for De Bie - but Kemboi keeps the race lead. Howard 3rd, with Van Stayen now 4th. Van Stayen now holding a 14 point lead in the Points competition, the same gap for Phelan as KoM.
