Vuelta a Espana

Stage 9: Andorra la Vella – Cortals d’Encamp 88.2 km

Welcome to Andorra la Vella, for what the media and cycling fans expect to be a blast.
The profile is extremely short with only Mountain, Mountain and more Mountain, taking place in and around the capital of the Principality of Andorra.

We start directly uphill today and although the official profile of Coll d’Ordino is just 8.7 km, that if misleading as we will see double digit slope within the first 2 km and the total length of the climb is more like 16 km just interrupted by a short flat section before the “official” part.

We have been hit by a sudden heat wave with temperatures up to 36°C, and very little wind so this is going to be a very hot day for the riders especially with all those hard climbs.

The Race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png van der Hoorn first with an acceleration at his wheel pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Poljanski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Owen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Schachmann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png McKenna

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/01.jpg

Still within the first two kilometers another group attacks and is now between the breakaway and the pack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Ciccone, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Bevin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Le Court, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Lastra and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Tolhoek

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/02.jpg

These two group unite after another 2.5 km, but looking over their shoulders they can see a lot more riders breaking free of the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Hacecky with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Russom

A trio with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Geoghegan Hart, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Paprstka and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Barbero

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Warchol with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Fritsch with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Benoot.

More riders even further back but at this point we don’t know who. The peloton quite slow already 2’45” behind the stage leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/03.jpg

The first mentioned 20 riders unite and the fireworks from the peloton stop after another kilometer, with one last group now in pursuit. Fronted by T-Mobile team leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Preidler, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Tratnik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Pedrero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Sequera

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Preidler is in a very difficult situation, off course none of the three riders he is with, allowed to help such a dangerous rider, but he has to be faster than the 18 riders up front sharing the workload between them. With just 3.6 km to the top, he is still more than a minute behind with the peloton at 4’35”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Ciccone opens the KoM sprint from 2.0 km, That was way to early and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman sitting at his wheel when the attack came, takes the Cat.1 in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png McKenna, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Lastra, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Bevin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Barbero

With this pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman get 16 points to become joint 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Barbero 6 points took him to 20 points as shared 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/06.jpg

Some riders lose contact over the top and most doesn’t get back on the downhill, this is the situation when the breakaway passes the points sprint just about to start Hors catégorie “Coll de la Gallina”
Leading pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Hacecky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Warchol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Ciccone, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Lastra, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Bevin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png McKenna, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Tolhoek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Fritsch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Barbero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Owen.

At 46” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Russom, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Poljanski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Benoot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Geoghegan Hart, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Schachmann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Le Court, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png van der Hoorn

At 1’27” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Preidler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Tratnik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Pedrero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Sequera

At 5’03 Peloton 169 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/07.jpg

Now the pace slows down a bit, maybe the slopes are just to hard and everyone is saving energy for a while, anyway not only the riders distanced over the last mountain come back but also group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Preidler joins the front to form a 24 riders breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/08.jpg

The drop in pace up front also result in the pack led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Edet, sometimes with a bit of help from teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Olesen has cut 1’30 of the distance with 7.5 km to the top.

From here pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Ciccone reacts in the breakaway takes the front, upping the pace again. With this acceleration we see first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Paprstka then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png van der Hoorn dropped.

An additional 30” added to the gap now 4’04”, 5 km to the top

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Ciccone can’t pull forever and fall back to recharge batteries, the somewhat weaker pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Benoot take over, and he is fast enough to drop pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Schachmann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Le Court

3 km to the top, pack at 3’51 they just reeled in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png van der Hoorn

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/10.jpg

2.5 km to the top, acceleration by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png McKenna, drops pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Barbero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Owen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Fritsch

Another acceleration led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Warchol and we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Preidler in difficulties, clearly marked by the many kilometers uphill where he had to lead his group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/11.jpg

Just one km left to the top of Coll de la Gallina, another acceleration. This time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Sequera with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Warchol clued.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Warchol sit tight on Sequera’s wheel and with a hard acceleration takes the KoM.in front of

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Sequera, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Hacecky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Benoot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Lastra and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Russom

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Warchol moves to shared 4th in KoM with 20 points, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Lastra 8 points took him to 7th with 18 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Tolhoek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Tratnik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Geoghegan Hart was dropped over the top, where as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Preidler grinded back to what is now the 1st pursuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Ciccone was also dropped on the long downhill and joined pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Geoghegan Hart, but on the short flat sector the duo and also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Tratnik made it back.

And just as they are about to start the first cat.2 “The Puerto de Comella” they also reeled in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Sequera and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Warchol.

The pack was at 4’04” at the end of the downhill, but upped the pace a lot, and now the strong pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Carthy is hammering up the first few km of Puerto de Comella, cutting the gap to 2’33”, the peloton slimmed down to 50 riders, with all the bigger names present. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Galta lost contact when the acceleration came but is back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Tratnik joins the group leading group with 3 km to the top, but with increased pace set by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman he was dropped again, so was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Ciccone and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Geoghegan Hart

Another hard acceleration from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman and it looks like he will get a gap, closest rival is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Russom, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Lastra and further back the larger group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman wins at Puerto de Comella with some distance to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Russom 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Lastra 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman now lead the KoM with 4 points to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Lastra another 2 points to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Taaramäe

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/17.jpg

The pack drops rider after rider the latest victims are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Lopez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Novikov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Tvetcov, 28 riders left with 17 harsh kilometers left for the favorites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman start the penultimate climb, cat.2 to Puerto de Engolasters with 16” to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Russom

With 1.8 km to the top the pursuit catches the escapees we got 8 riders now in the lead.

Just to reconfirm:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Preidler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Hacecky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Sequera, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Warchol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Russom, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Poljanski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/19.jpg

Acceleration from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Warchol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman attempted to take his wheel but was not able to hang in

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Warchol takes the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Hacecky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Sequera and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk

With this pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman leads the KoM with 6 points to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Warchol another 6 points to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Lastra.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/20.jpg

We got 4 flat km to the start of the final climb, pack at 4’12.
In the pack pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Carthy have been and is still lifting most of the workload on the climbs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Hacecky pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Sequera pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Warchol pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman have the 5 km banner and with that the final climb in sight.

At 40”
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Preidler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Russom and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Poljanski

At 2’09
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Pedrero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Benoot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Lastra

At 3’22 pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Bevin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png McKenna

With the pack at 4’59 we can rule out a favorite win today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/21.jpg

The pack has grown to 37 riders and still no one helps pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Carthy keeping the train rolling.

Up front pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Preidler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Russom and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Poljanski have rejoined the stage leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/22.jpg

With 3 km left for the favorites acceleration from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Quintana with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Velits, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Haig, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Kudus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Karnulin on a line behind him.

2.3 km left for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Quintana, he got a gap to the other favorites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk lead the breakaway without any notable events besides the fact that they get closer and closer to the finish line.

In the favorite group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla accelerated and closed down the attempt from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Quintana, the increased pace took the breath out of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Haig suffering at the rear, likely to drop soon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk lead the break under the red kite and also at 500 meters, the favorites are now less than a minute behind, absolutely no time for tactics.

In the favorite group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Taaramäe have taken the lead with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Kudus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla sitting very close, officially a total of 18 riders in the group but we see small gaps.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk opens the sprint late and he is clearly the strongest in the breakaway today, winning at Cortals d’Encamp

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Preidler 2nd with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Russom taking the last podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Hacecky 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Warchol 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman 6th, these riders all in the same time as Kruijswijk

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S9/27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Poljanski 7th just able to hold of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Taaramäe 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Sequera from the break 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Denifl rounds of top 10

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy 11th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin 12th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Kudus 13th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Karnulin surprise of the day 14th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla 15th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Tenorio 16 all at +30”
