The 2nd week starts with yet another hilly stage. Earlier this race Skujins won and Gesink was able to gap his biggest GC opponents. Will we see a similar scenario today? It surely helps him that several teams only have a puncheur and no huge GC rider here such as Gazelle, Evonik, Movistar, which are happy to ride together on stages like this.
In especially the second and final ascent of todays finish is really steep and could see a successful attack.
5 riders today try their breakaway luck.
Hansen
Gougeard
Wallays
Scheit
Wahyudi
No danger at all as Vesuvio rider is best placed but more than 34min behind.
Still the peloton once again not allowing a big gap and it only took KoM leader Chamorro half the Cat.2 to join them. 2min to the peloton.
Though the other riders are not happy at all to see Chamorro moving up to them as this makes their goal a lot harder.
And so they all try to annoy the Colombian by stealing the KoM points from him. And as Wahyudi, Scheit and Wallays all pass the line ahead of him, it was kind of successful.
Gougeard in 5th while Hansen has lost contact but will re-join them later on again.
With 40km to go though teams like Evonik and Gazelle helped the eBuddy riders enough to catch the break. So once more the early breakaway fails.
Gesink still with 2 team mates ahead of couple more behind him, which are yet unused as we hit the double climb in the end. 19km to go.
Next to him the top puncheurs Skujins and Van Garderen attack.
Also Koretzky in the mix with Pluchkin right behind Gesink.
While Van Garderen still has a gap to Skujins and Koretzky, those two got some support by Lutsenko.
Gesink did not follow and instead has the stronger support such as Ruijgh, Majka and Brambilla now ahead of him.
Unfortunately for Morton as this acceleration sees him dropping from the favourite group as biggest name. Yesterdays up in the mountain stage looked fine, today he seems to be on another down in the lesser suited terrain.
Lecuisinier surprises the other GC riders with his attack as people were more looking on Gesink.
He pulls yet again Chamorro with him in the hunt for more KoM points.
And as no one follows and Gesink is comfortable in the lead and not willed to use Brambilla too much, it`s Pluchkin to attack.
This time Gesink immediately reacts.
Also Guldhammer, Formolo, Goos, Van den Broeck and Nibali behind him but for now only Gesink is up to Pluchkin`s wheel.
In fact Gesink showins once more to be the better puncheur and distances Pluchkin.
Not long and he also is past Lecuisinier and joining the puncheur trio behind Van Garderen. Impressive!
About 3km left and Van Garderen has a comfortable 90s lead!
Then Lecuisinier following another 30s, which is still 1'10 ahead of Pluchkin/Chamorro/Juul-Jensen.
The 64 rider peloton just 25s behind them with Morton/Samwel/Boily being 1'30 later.
Van Garderen goes onto the steepest part and look in between the spectators! Robert Gesink has attacked the others and is closing!
Still 900m to go and Van Garderen in huge danger to lose the stage.
Sprint between both as the gap is gone.
But the US rider remains in the lead or was Gesink gifing him the stage? Who knows? At least both gain a lot of time on the others as there is no one close!
Skujins sprints the fastest for 3rd but opened a gap to Lutsenko and Koretzky. 1'11 for first. Another 18s for Lutsenko and 1'40 in total for the I-Gen rider. Where are the other GC riders?
Van der Lijke and Sagan lead in a fast group that did create a gap on the last kilometer. In there also GC riders Lecuisinier, Guldhammer and Van den Broeck as also Goos and Juul-Jensen.
Then another 30s the Pluchkin group, that is losing almost 3min on Gesink! Zakarin and Ginanni other names in there with Roelandts being a huge surprise!
Keinath 5s ahead of the remaining peloton including Tenorio, Nibali, Velits, Machado and so on. 3'36 for them. Gesink now already more than 8min in the lead and it could become the most dominant GT ever in the MG history. At the moment the 2010 Giro has a 12'23 win by Cunego over Pellizotti while the Vuelta`s biggest win was in 2012 when Madrazo gapped Contador by 11'23!
It`s 8'26 already and only 8 stages! Then again it was more hilly than mountain stages so far and it could also become one of the biggest come backs of all time.
