Stage 2
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/00.jpg

Stage 2 of the 2019 Tour of California is a flat one that takes the peloton from Red Bluff to Yuba City. There’s a tiny hill about 20 kilometres and an intermediate sprint about 13 kilometres from the finish that could throw a wrench is what is otherwise expected to be a straightforward mass sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/02.jpg

It took a while for a breakaway to form. Even at the first intermediate sprint, the peloton wasn’t content with who’s in front. But after a few more kilometres, the Top 3 of said sprint (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Pibernik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Hirschi in that order) are joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Eaton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Van Niekerk to form the break of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/03.jpg

Their advance peaks at three minutes about halfway through the stage but stays between two and three minutes for a long while.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/05.jpg

The quintet is still in front of the peloton at the second intermediate sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Pibernik outsprints pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane to take six points, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Eaton is third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/06.jpg

Andorra for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip and Kraftwerk for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Haller are the teams leading the chase for the pack, but with 13 kilometres to go, the group is still more than one and a half minutes ahead. Could we see the rare early stage breakaway upset?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/07.jpg

5 kilometres to go and we’re still at 1’45 for the break! If they don’t crack badly, this is their stage!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Eaton is the best-placed rider in the GC, including the one bonus second he’s 15 seconds behind the overall lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Van Niekerk is a further seven seconds behind, and after collecting 10 bonus seconds, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane is 19 seconds behind Eaton, so these three would fight for the yellow jersey in a number of szenarios depending on their finishes.

Calmejane needs to win the stage to take it, and he is easily the best sprinter on paper, but as we’ve seen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Pibernik packs a good punch as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/08.jpg

Even though it will only be for 6th place, some hasty sprint preperations take place in the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Vogt leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel at the top right, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Vanderaerden and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Te Brake follow close behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Schädlich and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Park try to get pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Haller in position, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip follows pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Dowsett on their right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen is the Carlsberg rider just behind them, himself followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Vanoverschelde and with a small gap pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Bennett. On his left is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Drapac.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/09.jpg

Close to the flamme rouge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Eaton leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Pibernik. Let’s see who keeps his cool!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/10.jpg

In the peloton, Andorra and Kraftwerk have taken the lead as both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Haller still have two riders in front of them. Next to the riders named above, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Roelandts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Harrison, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Redecker and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kuboki managed to latch onto the long line of sprinters behind the two trains, which is led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/11.jpg

Up ahead, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane has jumped past pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Eaton but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Pibernik is already trying to accelerate past him. It’s still early in the sprint, can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Hirschi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Van Niekerk take advantage?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Park tries to give pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Haller the best position in the sprint behind them, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Vanoverschelde in good positions. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip’s train on the right side has lost a bit of ground.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Pibernik doesn’t seem to find a way past pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Hirschi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Van Niekerk are slightly faster now, but the gap seems too big!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/14.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane takes it! What a surprising win ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Pibernik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Van Niekerk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Hirschi takes fourth place. In an incredibly close call, the Europcar rider also takes yellow just one second ahead of both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Eaton and Van Niekerk. The South African gets the white jersey as a consolation price.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/15.jpg

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Haller leaves his teammate’s wheel but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Vanoverschelde have a massive speed advantage at this point. A lot is happening behind them with most riders just going all out now, just pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Harrison and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Redecker still firmly in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn’s slipstream.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Vanoverschelde is already fading a lot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen still has some speed. Is it enough to carry him to the line? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Roelandts and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Te Brake to his left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Vanderaerden to his right are coming closer!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen is cracking, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Te Brake is sprinting past him! And on the other side of the road, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel who is suddenly coming to the front!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E2/18.jpg

And it is those two that finish sixth and seventh. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen saves the third place of the peloton which is good enough for eigth today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Vanderaerden complete the Top 10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Haller and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip both messed up their timing and couldn’t capitalize on their teams‘ work.

What a weird result of this opening road stage. A breakaway not only wins the stage but also yields a new overall leader with the closes margin possible between not two but three of the escapees. And it should be noted that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Lilian Calmejane is a fine puncheur who has a good shot of defending his jersey of the next three days, which include two hilly and another flat stage until we hit the mountains on day six.
