Tour du Maroc
Stage 2 of the Tour du Maroc takes the peloton 165km from Kourkouda to Taroudant. It is officially one of the hilly stages but it really consists of two mid-mountain climbs and then a short climb to the finish. Overall, we have 3 mountain primes plus 2 sprints. The leader’s jersey starts with yesterday’s winner Contreras but it seems likely we will have a new wearer by the end of the stage.
The stage favorites show up as:
A big battle for the break today, it takes over 20km but eventually we get a 7-rider group featuring:
Hofstetter
Krizek
Vink
Bernal
Robov
Lawless
Seibeb
Seibeb is a strong rider and Krizek, Vink and Robov are all solid in the hills. Despite some hard work Podium Ambition missed yesterday’s break but they have two riders today. Bernal in the break for the second straight day.
The first sprint is with 136km to go today. The break has 3’11 as they fight it out. Hofstetter leads Krizek and Lawless across.
The second sprint point comes with 114km to go. The lead is still just over 3 minutes. In the sprint Hofstetter wins again, this time ahead of Bernal and Robov.
The break is onto dirt roads as they head up to the first KOM point, a short Cat 4. Their lead is 2’23, the peloton not willing to let them get far ahead today.
Bernal leads them up the climb but as we approach the line it is Krizek taking it ahead of Vink and then Bernal.
As the peloton comes up the climb Meintjes has his team all over the front along with riders from Gazelle and Fablok. The lead is 2’22.
It is raining which has to make the dirt roads more challenging. The break starts the climb to Aguersafen with 62km to go and just 1’48 over the peloton. The climb is 4.3km averaging 6.2% but by far the toughest section is early in the climb. Samolenkov, 2nd yesterday, has punctured and is struggling to get back in the pack.
Potts is driving the peloton and riders are being spat out the back. Up front Krizek launches the first attack with 1.2 km to go. The attack draws Robov, Seibeb and Bernal clear by the top.
Full points are:
Robov 10 (10)
Seibeb 8 (8)
Krizek 6 (11)
Hofstetter 4 (4)
Vink 2 (5)
Blums leads the peloton across the sprint 2’00 behind the front of the race. But the 7 breakaway riders are spread out across the gap with only the first 3 over the climb in front.
From here it is a long steady descent before the second big climb to Sidi Ali ou Brahim. The peloton still has 138 riders. A lot of the sprinters are dropped but the yellow jersey is still there. With 40km to go the lead is 1’21 as cycleYorkshire drives the pace. Only Hofstetter was able to rejoin the front of the race. All the others have been caught except Vink who is caught in between.
The break has reached the bottom of the second big climb. It is 11.9km at 5.7% with the hardest gradients near the top. Their lead is 1’22. Seibeb and Krizek have tried to get away but weren’t successful. After this climb there will be just 12 km left, mostly downhill but then a short climb to the finish.
A kilometer later Seibeb goes again and this time he has a gap.
With 8km to go in the climb all the break are back with the peloton except Seibeb. He has 25 seconds. 142 riders in the peloton the Yellow Jersey still there but well back.
Gazelle and cycleYorkshire drive the pace and Seibeb is soon back in the pack. As Meintjes goes to the front Contreras is holding on at the back.
But as the front of the peloton passes the 1km marker it splits and 45 riders have a gap. Over the top Meintjes leads the way with 3 Desigual riders right behind. They have 1’26 over the second group and another 48 seconds over the Yellow Jersey group. But with a lot of riders still involved it could all come back together.
The 16 points for being over the top first means that Meintjes will wear the KOM jersey tomorrow. Not satisfied with that, with 12km, to go he attacks and quickly has a 10 second gap. Behind the pack has split further but all the GC favorites are present in the first 25 rider chase group. Now they need a team to take up the chase.
10km to go. The favorites are having to work behind to try and bring back Meintjes. Hirt on the front here.
But soon after they lose some impetus and as they descend Meintjes’ lead grows to 48 seconds. Boswell, who was likely trying to save himself for a run at the stage win, has to go to the front to protect Dombrowski’s GC ambitions. As Meintjes reaches the base of the climb to the finish he has a 39 second lead. He also has 2.8km’s of climbing to survive. The race isn’t coming back together it for a large group it will be Meintjes against the 25 chasers.
With 2km to go Boswell doing great work for his leader has the lead down to 24 seconds.
500 meters later Meintjes’ adventure is over and Dombrowski goes to the front.
1km to go, the road flattens from here. Behind Dombrowki we have two Desigual riders but their leader Nazaret is much further back. Next Sosnitskiy is protecting Formolo. The rest of the favorites are clustered close behind although Wellens is right at the back.
0.6 km to go and Dombrowski opens the sprint, close behind are Martin, Hirt and Meintjes
200 meters to go and they can’t gain any ground on Dombrowski. Behind it is Hirt then Martin with Kudus and Amador making up ground behind them.
They aren’t going to catch him, Dombrowski has time to celebrate. The GC favorite has stamped his authority on this race at the first opportunity.
The next 4 cross in the same order as before:
Hirt
Martin
Kudus
Amador
6 to 10 are:
Formolo
Monsalve
Meintjes
Grmay
Sosnitskiy
All our favorites finish in that front group on the same time. Contreras hangs on to the points jersey, for now, although he lost Yellow. Kudus takes White, he already looks likely to repeat his title in that competition. Desigual has the team lead.
