Tour du Maroc
Stage 7 of the Tour du Maroc takes us from Tizgyiu to Agadir. The 183km stage is the 4th flat stage of the race but perhaps the one most suited to the breakaway. The stage opens with 35km of mostly downhill riding mixed with some short sharp inclines then two cat two climbs. After a few more spikes following the second cat 2 the race is completely flat for the last 100km except for a small bump in the last 8k. There are also two sprint points. A peloton packed with sprint power would have a challenge to control the break today and the sprinters in the Maroc peloton have limited support.
The complex first half of the race means the GC contenders will need to be on their toes as well. Dombrowski has just a 4 second lead over Talansky. The 2 cat 2 climbs mean the KOM will be in play as well. Hacecky and Teuns are tied for the lead in that competition. With 1 more sprint and 1 more GC stage to go the sprinters really need the points today if one of them is to take the points jersey. Currently, Dombrowski also leads that.
We are choosing to ignore the stage favorites today because it is the sprinters officially but in reality it is whoever is in the breakaway (that and I forgot to take a screenshot).
The first 3 ridres are away but the peloton is still working hard as we complete the first section of descent 10kms into the stage.
The riders out front are Senyenov and Lawless, with about a minute and Scotson halfway in between.
Scotson is brough back on the next sharp incline and a whole raft of riders try to get away, most interestingly Van der Sande, clearly Farfetch aren’t going to wait for a sprint.
12 riders get a gap but they are quickly closed down. 3rd and 5th on the GC, Monsalve and Martin are heavily involved in the chase. Monsalve is wearing the green as he is second in the points standings.
We are now 20km into the stage and we have just two riders out front Senyenov and Lawless. They have 51 seconds.
9km later and we are in the midst of the 2nd sharp descent. Vanspeybrouck and Bester have pried open a gap. The cobbler dreaming of second stage win.
Soon after the peloton eases off. Maybe they were calmed by the view of the sea and a chance to enjoy today’s much better weather. The break’s lead is out to 2 minutes. Right now we have a surprisingly small 4-man break.
The break has come together. They are not a threat on the GC with Bester closest at 34 minutes. But just 10km later Senyenov is dropped on a very short climb.
With 1km to the top of the first Cat 2 Senyenov, who had got back on has been dropped again. The peloton is about 2’20 back, they aren’t chasing hard, but the break isn’t going very fast either.
As the peloton cross the 1km banner Kolar jumps out looking for KOM points.
Kolar passes the flagging Senyenov and takes 4 points. He is still 16 points behind the two leaders. The front three did not contest the points, Vanspeybrouck took first.
On the descent Kolar and Senyenov join the front 3 to give us a 5 rider break. Their lead is under 2 minutes as they start the second cat 2.
1 km from the top Kolar has dropped the others and is looking for first place points. Senyenov was dropped early on the climb and is back in the pack.
Kolar goes over first and takes 10 points putting him within 6 of the lead. No more points on offer today in that competition.
On the descent the front 3 join back up and have 3’20 lead. They have one more short climb a descent and then the long flat finish. Lawless is 1’57 back, he has a lot of work to do to get back on. A number of the sprinters are off the back of the peloton but if things stay calm they should be able to recover.
With just under 100k to go we have reached the flat section of the race. Lawless has almost closed the gap. The peloton is 2’49 behind
The first sprint point passes uncontested and with 85km to go the usual teams of the sprinters (Farfetch, Indosat and Tinkoff) are on the front, the gap is 3 minutes. Maybe that favorites screen was more relevant than I thought.
Indosat lead out man Speirs is the last man on the road and one of 5 riders still off the back. He does not look like he will be in any shape to take part in the sprint.
58km to go, the sprint teams are serious here and the lead is already down to 2 minutes.
35km to go and the lead is down to 1’17 and Vanspeybrouck decides to try it alone.
It takes 9km but his companions bring him back, the lead is down to 1’02, this is panning out to be a pretty standard sprint stage. Vanspeybrouck tries again but it is a forlorn effort and with 15km to go they are back in the peloton. The teams have time to organize the sprints ( Speirs wont’ be helping he is 15 minutes behind the peloton).
With 7k to go the peloton is climbing the small final hill, the sprint teams are driving the pace, they aren’t going to let his one slip away. The sprinters are all gathered near the front.
The sprint trains fight to get set up and with 2km to go it is still a little messy. On the left we have Schachmann leading out Goss. Indosat used a lot of riders on the chase and are missing Speirs, it looks like Goss is going to run out of riders too early. Contreras is on Goss’s wheel. Behind him Baska and Markus
In the middle the Tinkoff and Farfetch trains are comingled, we have:
Foliforov
Yates
Vlasov
Turgis
Van der Sande
Nizzolo
Samolenkov
Vermeltfoort is the rider to the right of the Tinkoff/Farfetch train
Two bends in quick succession wreak havoc with the trains. With 0.7 km to go from left to right we have:
Schachmann
Contreras
Goss
Van der Sande
Behind him is Nizzolo and next to him Samolenkov and Kolesnikov.
300 meters to go and it is down to the pure sprinters, across the road, Contreras, Goss, Van der Sande, Nizzolo and Samolenkov
100 meters and Contreras still has the advantage from his inside position.
A few meters to go and it seems to be between he 3 furthest from the camera. Behind Baska and Redecker are fighting for 6th.
Contreras appears to have it on the line.
And he is the winner. He has now won two stages without his team taking a single turn on the front. Goss is second, then Van der Sande, Nizzolo and Samolenkov.
Baska edges Redecker for 6th.
Then Vermeltfoort, Markus and De Buyst complete the top 10.
Contreras also gets the point jersey lead by 5 points over Dombrowski. There are no changes in the other classifications.
