Last stage of the race and it`s the 2nd cobbled one. Much easier than the opener and kind of Gent Wevelgem like with some cobbled sections, longer ones on the second half but the stage itself rather flat except for three cobbled hills.
Summerhill proved to be the strongest and is having the lead right now with Stallaert and Vanspeybrouck being the only riders able to give him a proper challenge until the final kilometer. Today would need a strong day to beat the US rider or some long range attacks by couple others including the Xero duo or the already attacking duo Nolf/Maes.
It will also be interesting how Lierse rides today and same for UBS or Delvaux, who are far behind their expectations GC wise. Same for couple other teams as well.
Well. What is a better way to put pressure on the peloton than sending 19 riders into the breakaway?
Feng (28th, +12'39)
Takenouchi
Gavenda
Grand / Schär
Jacobs / Minoungou
Aasvold
Putti
Nych / Gallego Martin / Garcia Cortina
Affini
Matsumoto / Rocchetti
Van der Haar / Hofstede
Kulppi / Vainionpää
Feng being the best placed but couple minutes already behind. But some pretty decent cobblers in there such as Grand, Van der Haar, Kulppi, Jacobs, Minoungo etc.
Iberia with the most riders but in comparison to the other cobblers, they might lack the one "leader" in that group. Nych at least working only to give the others some freedom. Same for all other teams of at least 2, where the stronger can sit back and save energy for later.
KoM wise Matsumoto is on 11 points and 8th in the ranking. Today has 20 points on offer, so he could actually equal Baugnies for the win. Already on the first hill sprint though he only gets 1 point instead of the maximum needed.
This basically makes Baugnies the KoM winner except for some attacks on the late cobbles by non cobblers such as Ford or Arashiro, who are closer.
Behind Philips, Xero, Carlsberg, Volvo and Andorra all seen in the chasing with 1 rider each.
On the first of the three hills on the second half, we see that the breakaway is split into several groups as the better cobblers upped the pace.
Also we see two riders attacking from the peloton trying to catch them.
It`s Chatarunga, 68th in the GC and just about the stage today and Fenn, sitting just one spot behind him. So also about the stage and maybe the points ranking as he could actually grab it when taking the win or equal with a 2nd.
As the top GC riders right now not being in danger, it`s the Minions chasing a lot with Flaksis. Maybe a stage for Vantomme as well?
Let`s see who is left in the front group.
Obviously the top cobblers Grand + Schär, Van der Haar, Jacobs + Minoungou, Kulppi as also Feng as best placed and Takenouchi, Gavenga.
So it`s down to 9 riders with Garcia Cortina just being dropped and so were Rocchetti, Putti.
Fenn/Chatarunga follow 1'42 then but also just 47s ahead of the peloton of 84.
In there Debesay, 4th in the GC just punctured and was a bit behind but quickly made it back luckily. Same for Drucker, who though is not the team`s leader and also did not make it back as he had it another 5km later, where the pace picked up.
The peloton went slow over the first 2 hills and the gap is up to 4'20 again. But now with 30km to go the pace is higher again as Eeckhout/Bakari for Andorra as also Broers for Volvo and Ostergaard for Carlsberg are working.
Group Fenn is caught but the actual break riders are still looking good now.
The team mates as also Gavenda, Feng and Minoungo are dropped.
Only the top cobblers Grand, Kulppi, Van der Haar and Jacobs in the first group plus Takenouchi, who is a decent cobbler as well but clearly on a good day.
Nolf proving to be aggressive this race and with 9km to go attacks again.
The pace though was really not as high to really be a danger for the break as those did just as fast for most of the time.
With him Zepuntke, who though is 44th in the GC.
2km left and the gap still at 4'30.
Jacobs in the unwanted first position. Van der Haar behind him with Grand, Kulppi following. Takenouchi just riding in last spot.
Jacobs quickly not able to fight for the win.
Kulppi and Van der Haar in the wind with Grand and Takenouchi still having that slipstream.
The Japanese though attacking now as he wasn`t tired but just did not want to chase against stronger riders.
It wasn`t enough though as the Delvaux rider had the best allround package. Good cobbler, great on the flat, decent sprint and hill skills. Early in the wind but enough speed to take it by one bike length.
Behind a lot closer but in the end Grand using the slipstream up to 2nd and Kulppi defends 3rd just ahead of Takenouchi with Jacobs having to take the 5th only.
Gavenda in 6th still ahead of the peloton just like Feng.
Zepuntke and Sibilla end up gaining 18s on the favourites for the late top10 while Nolf apparently was caught end swapped.
Stallaert then wins the group sprint ahead of Rowe and Debesay.
Quite disappointing GC fight here with no real attacks but likely the stage itself was not hard enough for bigger gaps anyway.
So Summerhill takes it while Rowe indeed gained a few points today to equal Zabel`s point ranking.
