Desigual {2018}

Mresuperstar has returned his squad to the Pro Tour after a short one-year relegation stint in 2017. The American manager enters his seventh Man-Game season with a revitalization of the former Spanish roots the team has carried since the very beginning while abandoning the longstanding American sponsorships.

From Team CSC-Orbea to Movistar-US Postal to Newton Foundation to Desigual, this isn't just another new project breaking into the top flight. These cyclists have been here before and continue to show that they don't belong in the lower ranks.

Yet, having been here before and failed, a new approach is necessary.

Time to find out if Desigual's vibrant colors can shine in the Pro Tour peloton.

La Vida es Chula.

The numbers don't show the whole picture here. Some riders were willingly to take pay cuts to give themselves trade leverage in the offseason, while others decided it was best to hit free agency and take matters in their own hands. Five cyclists were released, one iconic name obviously missing... the Russian Rocket, Roman Maksimov.

Others released were Janier Alexis Acevedo, Christian Meier, Aggrey Sebright and Tyler Brandt.

Overall, I feel like renewals went well. A good start to the offseason.

Maksimov Saga Continues | Sprinter Flees Desigual

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-1-013.jpg

Roman Maksimov sprints to third place in Stage 1
of the 2017 Corsica International.

BARCELONA, Spain - Russian sprinter Roman Maksimov was caught on camera this morning flipping off paparazzi while leaving the new Desigual cycling headquarters. Two hours later, the media found out why.

The feisty 30-year old sprinter had his contract terminated with the new Pro Tour team. The decision wasn't mutual.

"Maksimov had his mind set on not being here," Desigual manager Mresuperstar said. "We tried to negotiate, but it was useless. The numbers just didn't add up. He wanted nearly double his salary and that just wasn't feasible. He wasn't going to budge, so we decided it was time to move on. We wish him the best of luck."

Maksimov is coming off one of his best seasons of his career. He placed 41st in the individual PCT standings with 393 points despite not winning a race last year.

Mre didn't think that warranted the big raise that Maksimov wanted.

"Sprinters are paid to win, Maksimov didn't win," Mre said. "And heading back into the Pro Tour, where Maksimov had one win in two years with Movistar-US Postal, we felt it was best to look elsewhere."

Maksimov couldn't be reached for comment.

It's an ugly split for the cyclist and manager who have worked together, off and on, for four seasons. Maksimov got his first real break (and hefty paycheck) when Mre first entered the Man-Game scene in 2012 with Team CSC-Orbea.

Willingly to pay the big bucks then, not so much now.

The unpredictable 'Russian Rocket' is looking for a new home and is looking to get paid, while Mre begans his search for a new sprinter.

Great to see you back in the PT where you belong! Will be interesting to see how you go about this transfer window to increase your chances of avoiding relegation this time around. I'm sure we'll end up competing in the transfer window again but, as always, I look forward to it Wink

Nice paycheck cut for Van Garderen, that + going in to PT again gives you some nice money to play with Smile

yeah those sprinters sure wanted to earn more Pfft

All I can think of when seeing that jersey is the unfortunate colouring of the groin region. It will be eye-catching, if nothing else Grin

Lovely jersey, looking forward to see it in Game.

On The Transfer Block

Tejay Van Garderen

With a heavy heart, the former World Champion (5th this year) and current American RR champion has handed in a transfer request with hopes of joining a team that won't be in a relegation battle next season. The change to a Spanish sponsorship didn't help either. TVG has captained our team for the last three season and is nothing but pure class. He delivers time and time again. A perfect team leader. He took a massive paycut in the offseason in hopes of finding a new home.

Lawrence Warbasse

28 Years Old : € 145,000 : 235th PCT Individual Standings (50 Points)

Last season, Newton Foundation avoided the mountains at all costs and Warbasse couldn't handle the co-captain role with Omar Fraile. So, as a result, a rather poor season for the American. It wasn't too surprising that he handed in a transfer request when the Desigual sponsorship was announced. Warbasse is capable leader on a cheap wage for a CT, or a climbing helper at the PCT or PT level.

Congrats on the promotion! Always nice to see more NA riders coming into the mix on the transfer market. Gonne be interesting to see where Teejay ends up for sure. Some major moves on the cards this season with Spilak, Teejay and EBH all being available in some capacity. Also very nice jersey!

Transfers (Part 1)

A change to having a primary Spanish sponsorship has shaken the roots of former Newton Foundation cycling team to its core. The last three days have been chaos for manager Mresuperstar in trying to build a relegation surviving Pro Tour team while also preserving the bright future this team has with promising youngsters.

Here is what has happened so far. First, the new recruits.

Justo Tenorio

29 Years Old : € 750,000 : 89th PT Individual Standings (321 Points)

Former 2017 team: Iberia - Team Degenkolb bought for 2,800,000.

FLMOHITTSTARESRECCOBSPACCFTDHPL
68847680787679595866846879

The 2013 Vuelta a Espana champion jumps ship from one Spanish team to the next. Hopefully this time around he won't send his team into the relegation zone. Tenorio hasn't always lived up to his stats, but we still considered him one of the best climbers on the market. It at least gives us a glimmer of hope in winning our first Grand Tour ever.

Nelson Oliveira

29 Years Old : € 235,000 : 199th PT Individual Standings (130 Points)

Former 2017 team: Porto - Prio (Free Agent)

FLMOHITTSTARESRECCOBSPACCFTDHPL
72747378757571726171706578

What can't Oliveira do? The perfect type of cyclist to power through Grand Tours, especially this season with all the TT miles. He is also the current Portuguese TT champion as well.

Departing

Tejay Van Garderen: Sold for 3 million to T-Mobile, TVG certainly left his mark in team history. He departs as the All-Time program wins leader with 11 victories in three seasons. It was only fitting that in his last race wearing our jersey he won the USA RR Championship. Farewell TVG, you will be missed.

Lawrence Warbasse: Another American heads out. The former GT stage winner joins Andorra Project - InGamba in the lower CT tier as a team leader. We are excited to see what he can do there. We wish him well.

Others: We have also sold helpers Sebastian Henao, Jorge Abreu and Jake Keough. The Colombians were especially hard to let go of, but we recieved offers too good to pass down.

Well, that's it for now. More news to come later, including all the loaned in cyclists we are bringing on... and training news! But first, we have to fill out our roster.

I really hope Tenorio does a job for you as he had a shocker of a season last season in 89th in the PT rankings. Hopefully the support you provide will provide some incentive for him to perform this season! Oliviera on the other hand a solid FA signing who should do a good job supporting anyone.

Transfers (Part 2)

After an ongoing busy transfer season, the 2018 Desigual cycling team is starting to take shape. We are happy to announce the following signings.

Xuban Errazkin

22 Years Old : € 300,000 : Level 1.00

FLMOHITTSTARESRECCOBSPACCFTDHPL
69687067697070646266646567

Our newest shiny prospect. Errazkin joins the likes Marcos Altur, Omar Fraile and Carlos Verona as the next Spanish project to come through our program. A puncheur by trade, but could also develop into more of a climber. This season Errazkin will likely be racing for Azteca - NBCSN (loan pending) to reach his fullest potential the quickest. We wish him well and will be watching closely.

Bakhtiyar Kozhatayev

26 Years Old : € 150,000 : 137th PCT Individual Standings (104 Points)

Former 2017 team: Compal-Merida (Free Agent)

FLMOHITTSTARESRECCOBSPACCFTDHPL
74777472717571705269627472

We are still trying to figure out how to pronounce his name, but that's not important. 'Kozhat' knows how to ride a bike. The young climber has decent backup stats as well (and he can even ride the cobbles). A great helper for Tenorio and Altur, don't see that every day.

Daniel Teklehaimanot

30 Years Old : € 170,000 : 177th PCT Individual Standings (79 Points)

Former 2017 team: Eritel - Sonatrach (Free Agent)

FLMOHITTSTARESRECCOBSPACCFTDHPL
68777474727276556470736774

From his hometown team to something unique and completely different. Teklehaimanot is breaking barriers as the first African cyclist to be managed by Mresuperstar, entering his seventh season. Daniel brings the climbing prowess to be a viable support rider in Grand Tours.

Roman Maksimov

30 Years Old : € 250,000 : 41st PCT Individual Standings (393 Points)

Former 2017 team: Newton Foundation (Free Agent)

FLMOHITTSTARESRECCOBSPACCFTDHPL
72535869706975588184596469

The Russian Rocket needs no introduction. After talks broke down in the renewal phase, Maksimov enlisted the help of the Russian mob to ensure he got what he wanted. We should have just met his initial demands and saved some money. Maksimov has also demanded he gets trained this offseason as well... we have no choice but to comply. (Help...)

Incoming Loanees

Lots of rental faces looking for experience will be in the building next season.

And of course Maximov is back

I fear that replacing Tejay with Tenorio won't be a good move for you Sad
