Vuelta a España - Stage 4

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-04-000.jpg

Welcome to Albacete to watch the fourth stage of La Vuelta 2018! Yet another completely flat stage, this time with start and finish in the same city, Albacete. Only two intermediate sprints today so not a lot to battle for before the expected sprint.

Yesterday Stallaert took the win in a surprising duel with Soupe, with Coquard finishing fifth to retain the GC lead for one more day. Swift has been struggling with his speed so far, but talking to us before the stage he has said he hopes for a win today to compensate for his bad performances so far

There’s a first breakaway attempt with 6 riders, including GC 4th Lammertink, Groselj, Van Winden, Lindgren, KoM leader De Vresse and Prado. But Desigual closed the gap very quickly, not wanting a big breakaway today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-04-002.jpg

At the end three riders got away from the bunch, and formed the BotD

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Groselj is the much better sprinter, so he won both intermediate sprints, both ahead of Spengler, so the Isostar rider gets 12 bonus seconds that would put him in the U25 lead and 4th in provisional GC

Intermediate Sprint - Balazote

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Spengler drops the rest of the breakaway with 15 kms to go, though the bunch is only 30 seconds behind and won’t take too much time until he’s caught too

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-04-006.jpg

And as expected, the Swiss rider is caught just before the 10-km mark. Now everything set for a mass sprint here in Albacete

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-04-007.jpg

Aegon and Festina have their sprint trains formed as in every stage with just over 3 kms to go, but it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Mas trying to disrupt the sprint, with an attack! Though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Olivier brilliantly has caught his wheel. Some sprinters are really far back, like Stallaert and Soupe, yesterday’s 1-2, not even in the first 50 places of the peloton

Just under two kms to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Sbaragli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Santos are launching the sprint for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Bauhaus has done a not very fair move, dropping straight into Festina’s train, which could destroy Coquard’s stage hopes if the French can’t go around him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard is doing a very early sprint in the left side after not getting Swift’s wheel, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Kupfernagel on his wheel, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen are fighting for Swift’s wheel

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-04-009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift is again going to do a late sprint, as he’s still behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Sbaragli under the “Flamme Rouge”. Big mess up by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard, as he got blocked by his fading teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bar, while losing Santos’ wheel, who hasn’t realised of this issue. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Stallaert has appeared in the sprint from nowhere, though he started to sprint like from 3 kms to go, so he shouldn’t be able to hold his speed until the end, and he has U25 leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger on his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke had enough of being in Coquard’s wheel and losing ground, so he’s launching his sprint already

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-04-010.jpg

600 metres left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard is in the lead, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel and Kupfernagel have jumped out of his slipstream, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift is again suffering from top speed issues, though not as bad as previous days. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Stallaert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger are already losing speed, so they’ll be overtaken soon by a really fast pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke. Air France has like 3 sprinters in the Top15 right now, but they might not get a single Top8 result as things stands right now

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-04-011.jpg

It looks like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift finally has got his shit together and is making a decent comeback with 200 metres left, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Kupfernagel have lost a little of speed from their very long sprint. But watch out with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard, who is much faster than anyone else and could complete an amazing comeback

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-04-012.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Ben Swift does it! Great stage win for the Brit, who was able to finally resolve his top speed issues despite perfect leadouts from Bauhaus and Sbaragli and gets his first stage win in the race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-04-013.jpg

Coquard completes his comeback to get a second place that will see the French rider increased his GC lead in just 4 seconds over Howard, who gets the third place in the stage, to a total gap of 6 seconds. Kupfernagel beats Zabel for the fourth place

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-04-014.jpg

Van der Lijke gets sixth place, ahead of Chen and two Air France riders, Kennaugh and Clarke, who maybe should have worked together and get a better result than 8-9. And Samolenkov closes the Top10 after overtaking a fading Santos in the last moment

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-04-015.jpg

It’s Ben Swift’s fourth stage win ever in La Vuelta, after his one win in 2014 and two wins in 2015, when he was still a Vesuvio rider. The Brit is now up to 4th in GC, 22 seconds behind Coquard. The French rider also leads the Points standings, with a 6-point gap over Howard and 18 points over Swift.

Groselj couldn’t finish the stage in the bunch, thus losing the chance of getting the U25 lead, which remains in Enger’s shoulders
