Welcome to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne for the third stage of the Criterium du Dauphine Libere. The riders await 218.5 kilometers towards Annonay-Davézieux and even though the stage is rated as flat, the riders will have to climb up two category one climbs. The final kilometer is also uphill, so it might not be the standard battle of the sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S3/02.jpg

A first breakaway formed on the early slopes of the Col du Grand Cucheron:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Mosca (KoM leader, 38 pts)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Lhotellerie
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Oram (44th GC, +4'22)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Roman

There would be two counter attempts to make it to the breakaway, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Jansen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Mudarra partaking in both. However, neither group would make the crossing, hence the four aforementioned riders would make the definitive breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S3/03.jpg

KoM leader Mosca adds another 16 points to his tally to strengthen his lead. Roman, Lhotellerie and Oram take second to fourth place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S3/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Giogieri, Benoot and Burke taking the remaining points while leading the peloton for RBC and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Phinney. Popo4Ever helps out the Canadians in the chase, but the pace isn't that high given almost no rider was dropped on the Grand Cucheron. Those who did managed to regain contact on the downhill. With 170 kilometers to go the gap to the breakaway is five minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S3/05.jpg

Oram did not go for the bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint, even though he is the virtual GC leader now. Lhotellerie picks up the points and the seconds. Gap has increased to six minutes over the last 20k.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S3/06.jpg

One thing is clear: Mosca is determined to win the mountain classification. He crosses the top of the second category one climb of today, the Col du Granier, with a minute over his breakaway compatriots. The standing after today will be Mosca 70, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ludvigsson 31 and Roman 24.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S3/07.jpg

And as RBC leads the peloton over the top, the gap has increased to eight minutes. There is still 135 kilometers to go, so the workhorses will have to do their thing. A few riders got dropped for real now, amongst those are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Korsaeth (4th GC and youth leader) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ligthart (12th GC).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S3/08.jpg

The sprinter teams took over from RBC after the climb, most notably Desigual and EA Vesuvio, but not before the gap reached double digits. Berg thinks to have a chance with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png McEvoy, since they also put a rider at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S3/09.jpg

Fast forward to 20 kilometers to go and the gap is brought down to 1'30. We seem to be heading towards an uphill mass sprint. Mosca is not ready to give up yet and attacks at a (uncategorized) climb, with Lhotellerie following him. Oram and Roman couldn't follow, held their legs still and allowed themselves to be caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S3/10.jpg

Mosca holds a constant one minute lead, while Lhotellerie realized his fate and dropped back to the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Tenorio is tasked with catching the Italian, apparently pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel thinks he has a chance today. Some sprinters like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Ulanowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Samolenkov were dropped on the small hill, while many sprinters are at the back of the group. Also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Krasnoperov was dropped, prompting his T-Mobile team to send back everyone except pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Marquez.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S3/11.jpg

And under the banner signaling five kilometer to go, Mosca is caught. He put himself even firmer in the KoM jersey today, but the stage win was a bridge too far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S3/12.jpg

As we enter Annonay, here are the riders at the front:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Paterski
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Reimer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijkepcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Marycz
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Tsatevichpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Kreder
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Phinneypcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Chiarello
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Bekmanispcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Trillinipcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Guerreiro
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Ackermannpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png McEvoy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Arndtpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger

Van der Lijke looking for his second stage victory. Zabel is going to try despite the incline and Phinney seemingly throwing himself into the mix as well!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S3/13.jpg

Van der Lijke lost contact with his lead-out! Reimer is now leading out for competitor Marycz. Doesn't he know he lost his leader? Tsatevich leading out Zabel on the left hand side with Phinney and Bekmanis behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S3/14.jpg

One last kilometer and Reimer continues to put Marycz in the prime position with Van der Lijke further behind! Zabel starts to struggle holding Tsatevich's wheel, maybe the hill is too much for the German.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S3/15.jpg

Here comes Van der Lijke powering from behind! Reimer is empty and Marycz couldn't really gain any advantage from this surprising lead-out. Phinney dives into a small gap between them, with Bekmanis on the left side of the road and Tsatevich going for his own chances today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S3/16.jpg

200 meters, Phinney versus Van der Lijke...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S3/17.jpg

And it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Taylor Phinney who takes his second, consecutive stage win in Annonay-Davézieux! He denies Van der Lijke a second victory by a wheel. Tsatevich takes third place ahead of Marycz, Bekmanis, Enger, Reimer, McEvoy, Ackermann, and Zabel rounding out the top ten.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S3/18.jpg

A small gap occurred after the first ten riders or so, but the jury does not give a time gap and hence Phinney's lead only increased by the twenty bonus seconds he picked up today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Pluchkin finished eleventh and can consider himself lucky with this decision.
