After the flat opener, the 2nd stage already will see the GC riders to fight for the win. It`s one of two hilly stages but surely the Cat.1 looks like a proper mountain there. Top favourite Beltran is also a very decent climber and he will need to gain today to have chances to stay ahead if the longer mountains as well. Same goes for other puncheurs such as Chaves. Boily, Chernetskiy or Palini.
Sicard as GC top favourite though also being a very strong puncheur might try to already gap the other stage racers such as Kudus or Dombrowski.
Small early break again. Just two riders in Lamoureux and Ludvigsson. First is 7th in the GC after yesterdays breakaway time bonusses but then again being the 2nd worst puncheur/climber in the peloton. Later though is a good puncheur and shouldn`t be ignored.
As it`s only two riders, the two early sprints both ahve some points left, which are won by Drapac and Vanderbiest. The only other rider also contesting was the GC leader Kragh Andersen, who twice sprinted for nothing.
Early on Carlsberg did some duty at the front of the peloton but as Kragh Andersen surely has no chance to keep it on GC stages and Garby is all but comfortable on such hill stage, they soon let other teams work once the uphill sections are reached.
Mainly Air France for Sicard are taking over now with 4 riders
around their leader.
And also the break gave up by now and don`t even go onto the climbing. Caught with 60km to go!
And first rider dropped already is Drapac, who is now fighting against the time limit.
There was no action on the first climb, where the Air France riders got the points with Salinas, Koch and Lietaer. Only thing of notice that the peloton split into two equalli sized groups with GC leader Lietaer being in the later group. Good for Carlsberg that Garby is still in the first group, bad for them, that he is isolated there and still almost 20km to go.
And even worse that the pace is likely to improve now as Boily attacks. He is one of those riders that can climb on all mountains but surely prefers the hills and obviously wants to gain time today.
Surprisingly no one follows!
In fact no one really reacted! Ignatenko, who was working for Tinkoff at the moment of the attack, basically stopped, probably expecting their leader to follow and Air France also didn`t accelerate until 5km later, where the first group is again split into a 23 and a 35 rider group.
Biggest names being in the 2nd group are:
Velits
De la Cruz
Ji
Marquez
Brenes
Senni
Garby
Boily though in the meantime got an advantage of 2'30.
In the valley after the Cat.1 the gap is still 2'47 and while it looks like being a presented stage win for him, this could also be very dangerous for the GC as he isn`t that bad of a climber to potentially lose less than this on the longer climbs.
Group Velits already more than 1min behind and surely struggling to make it back while also Dombrowski is slowly losing his helpers.
Boily probably can`t believe the gap when looking right into the far background. 7km and still 2'48 going over the last small hill, which isn`t the most difficult though.
At least steep enough for some more attacks and finally the top puncheur Beltran attacks likely hating to not having followed before.
Talansky and Chaves behind chase with several others also in the mix such as Bennett, Sicard, Squire, Chernetskiy, Dombrowski, Hirt, Yates, Schelling, Wellens, Ndayisenga, Preidler, Nibali, Penasa, Kudus, Palini.
Group 2 sees the relegation fight as Lierse is chasing with Dall'Oste for Senni trying to gap Garby and chances are good as the Dane is struggling at the end of the group.
Stage win and GC lead though for Boily. The only one to attack on the Cat.1 and he got rewarded for this move. And even though the gap became smaller in the end, it`s not easy to gain back that time.
Beltran`s attack was good enough to create a proper gap. He comes to the finish 1'07 behind Boily.
Sicard in 3rd not only getting important bonus seconds, he in fact is also rewarded a small gap. 1'38 for him and 1'46 for the riders behind him!
Except for Ndayisenga all riders listed above finish in that group.
De la Cruz and Senni both did attack in the end to make it at 2'32 not losing too much but more important gaining 28s on the group around Velits.
And indeed Garby got dropped in the end losing 4'55 and might be out of the GC fight while Senni sits in 20th with chances to improve.
