The 2nd half of the 2018 Giro starts with a puncheur stage. 230km as well but it`s not Ardennes type of puncheur stage but with longer climbs and while never being really flat, the middle section surely the easiest today.
A longer Cat.2 early on and then the main decision likely to be made at the end with another Cat.2 but a 5km flat section towards the finish.
By not being a typical puncheur stage it`s a question if Demare or Costa are able to take it.
Guldhammer or the other GC riders with good skills on hills might be favoured even.
6 riders and surprise, surprise, no Vosekalns! Instead his team mate Egger for Evonik, who can`t complain about their activity early on. Olsson, 2nd in the KoM with 35 points is miles behind already and the KoM slowly becomes boring. Then again lots of mountains still left which expectations of 1-2 breaks of Vosekalns surely though...
Veyhe
Ludvigsson
Van Winden
Manakov
are the others, who are kind of popular break riders by now.
Egger continueing what Vosekalns has started. He wins the Cat.2 and stealing points from runner-up Olsson! Ludvigsson next ahead of Veyhe, while the other two got dropped and actually passed now by Smith, who takes the last 2 points. The Bennelong rider also used to go for KoMs here and there but often missing out on the big points due to his needed support for Morton.
He joins the break though and wins the Cat.3 ahead of Egger and Ludvigsson. No points for Olsson!
Some well known GT chasing here over the past couple seasons. EA Vesuvio with GC leader Schleck having the duty to work.
Former KoM leader Mraouni and time trialist Kneisky mainly do so.
Also Jungels working with Festina sending out Santos. Apparently Lecuisinier is aiming for something today.
Later Kirsch and Heymes are taking over as the final 45km are with a lot of uphill sections, where those two are better suited for a high pace.
Several riders did attack over the last 5km and in the end a small group opened a tiny gap.
Figueiredo
Vysna
and former Giro winner Ricco!
Others that tried without success were Formolo or Teklehaimanot. Festina though with Chamorro also involved now are chasing hard while Kirsch is helped out by Goos as well now. So the last and maybe best support of Schleck.
The final climb starts. The Colle Molella with 8,4km and almost 7% in average!
The trio of recent attackers just got caught and also the last breakaway riders in Egger and Smith are less than 1min ahead.
Goos showing his skills and pulling Schleck with him and not sure if on purpose or not, Kirsch nicely letting a gap to them and a gap opens.
All the big names though right behind in Dombrowski,
Amador, Morton, Guldhammer, Hirt, Machado, Lecuisinier and the others.
Also Demare up there in ~15h position while Costa is a bit further behind.
Goos takes teh 10 points at the top. Likely his best day so far and this will become important once going into the big mountains for Schleck.
Smith as runner up still getting some more points with Schleck, Morton, Dombrowski next.
With now just 4,7km to go a group of 12 actually opened a gap! Most top riders are in there and at least the top5-6 apparently.
38s behind a group of 16 including the other top10-15 riders and also Demare, who was not able to keep contact with the very best.
And then a group of 3 another 50s back with big names. Nibali as top10-15 contender, Kolesnikov likely for the same GC area while Costa was a rider for today but just like Benoot, Ricco or Chamorro another group behind he lost contact.
2,1km and the two groups merge again! Good for those that missed out and for some that might even have a decent sprint for the stage win.
Demare on the far right now, Bibby in the front of that former 2nd group.
Even bigger news as also the trio around Nibali was able to join. Pace surely wasn`t the highest.
31 riders now together for the stage win!
Goos still doing his work for Schleck in 2nd position. Lecuisinier, Morton, Amador next with Machado behind.
Guldhammer as maybe best "sprinter" of those following with Hirt and Alarcon.
Demare already behind those 3 then in a good position.
700m and Schleck going past Goos!
Though in 3rd position already the point jersey of Demare ahead of Amador and Lecuisinier with Guldhammer also going fast.
300m and not the fairest sprint. Demare vs. Schleck. Obvious sprint differential!
Guldhammer vs. Amador, Alarcon and Goos for 3rd?
Big win for Demare. Even on terrain, that looked too hard for him and led to some gaps. Surely the lower pace in front came in handy but still impressive win.
Schleck with more bonus seconds as also Guldhammer, who is collecting some nice stage results as well here. Amador and Alarcon following ahead of Goos in 6th today, who was really strong today.
First 31 riders all within the same time and then a group following at 1'30 around Carapaz, Chamorro, Vosekalns, Pantano, Ricco, Fraile etc.
