Stage 4: Al Thakhira - Madinat Al Shamal 144.0 km

Welcome to the 4nd stage, we start in Al Thakhira, originally a pearl-diver settlement of the Al Muhannadi tribe, the town is still having a port and fishing industry.

From there the route travels northwest, finishing in Madīnat ash Shamāl capital of Al Shamal municipality at the northern most tip of Qatar, a town (or city) with a population of around 9.000.

A nice sunny day, with much less wind (about 20 km/hour) compared to what we got yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/4/0.jpg

Not that much fighting this morning, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Campenaerts opens the stage soon followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png van Zyl and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Roman.

A little later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Ariesen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Egidio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Karatzios attacks and also get a nice gap.

The two groups join up and we got todays 6 riders breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/4/1.jpg

The distance was increased to 5’20” but when we get to the first sprint with 85 km left it is reduced to 4’32”, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Karatzios wins the sprint without any fighting, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Egidio 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Ariesen 3rd.

Best placed in GC is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Ariesen at 5’26, on paper pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png van Zyl probably the overall strongest in the break.

At the next sprint distance is reduced to 3’11” with 60 km left.
This time a duel to win the sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Ariesen takes it in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Egidio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Karatzios picks up the last two points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/4/2.jpg

In the high pace part of the chase we mostly see these riders working:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Danacik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png De Vreese, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Eislers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Gallego Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Hnik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Hoffman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Soler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Stoltz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Turek.

With 15 km left the distance is 1’23”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/4/3.jpg

From 15 km onwards it is mainly Evonik – ELKO and Moser – Sygic leading the chase.

The breakaway has 4 km left, distance 1’07” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Ariesen attacks from the breakaway. With this much distance it is possible.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/4/4.jpg

In the peloton with 3 km left, this is the situation in front.

The three others from the breakaway at 41”
Peloton at 57”, it is quite clear that the winner will be one from the breakaway now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/4/7.jpg

The peloton is at 48” under the red kit, a winner from here is out of question, still with three riders out in front.
