Tirreno-Adriatico - Stage 5
Tamijo
Tirreno-Adriatico

Stage 5: Teramo - Torricella 162.8 km

The stage starts in Teramo, from there moving into Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga national park over a hard uncategorized climb near the village Macchia Da Sole, close to Montagna dei Fiori "Mountain of the Flowers" and then after descent up to the cat.1 Monte Ceppo, before four short laps between Teramo and Torricella every time over the hard hilly climb up to Torricella, 2 km at 7.3% with a mid-section up to 13.8%, where we also finish.

This is the stage of this year’s Tirreno-Adriatico coming closest to a real mountain stage, must expect punchers with some longer climbing ability to be in favor, but the fact that we have those 4 hilly climbs near the end and the mountains early will still make it more punchy and less of a mountain stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S5/1.jpg

As oppose to yesterday, a wonderful sunny day with little wind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Kittel initiates the stage still inside Teramo city, soon to have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Tim Ariesen at wheel.

A group of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Badilatti, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png De Gendt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Maccagli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png van Zyl joins after about 10 km and finally pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Jones join after 23 km, to form todays 7 rider breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S5/2.jpg

Best placed in GC is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png van Zyl as 60th 12’10” behind the leader.

Best placed in KoM pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Jones with 10 points.

The strongest rider on paper pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Badilatti, a very competent rider, with good skills on hills as well as in the mountains, that may be the reason why the peloton do not really settle down, keeping up some pace and not allowing the gap to grow beyond 3 minutes.

Starting the uncategorized climb to Macchia Da Sole the distance is 1’46”, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Benito leading the peloton on the climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Badilatti pulling the breakaway and it is too much for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Maccagli

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S5/3.jpg

As soon as the gradients are lowered a little pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Maccagli accelerates and get back into the breakaway, passing over the top they got 2’09”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S5/4.jpg

In the valley between the two climbs pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png van Zyl has a puncture, but is back before the actual climbing begins. They have 2’20” with 13 km to the top.
It is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Benito and later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Rosch pulling the peloton on the climb.

From the breakaway pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Jones attacks with 1.2 km to the top, winning the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Badilatti

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Jones 16p
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Badilatti 12p
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Kittel 10p
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png De Gendt 8p
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png van Zyl 6p
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Ariesen 4p
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Maccagli 2p

The peloton has slowed down some; they got 3’08” over the top, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Ariesen lost 27” and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Maccagli 2’29” on the climb, he won’t come back this time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S5/5.jpg

62 km to the line, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Badilatti wins the intermediate sprint, the five riders are now the only ahead of the peloton, and they have lost a lot of time fast, the gap is now 1’35”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S5/6.jpg

With 50 km left we see an attack from the peloton by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Smirnovs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Felline, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Bratashcuk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Paulinho

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S5/7.jpg

Group Smirnovs was never allowed to get anywhere. We are now at the start of the final four hill climbs with 43 km to the line, distance is 1’13”, the peloton a large group of 111 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S5/8.jpg

29 km left and the breakaway is over, still no important selection in the peloton. Notable from here riders distanced with a lap is sometimes overtaking confusing the coverage a little.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S5/9.jpg

Team Puma – SAP is leading with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Wackermann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Sagiv, the only noteworthy rider to have been dropped is KoM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Phelan.

The worst positioned GC Top 10 rider is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Beltran and sitting protected in the first half of the peloton, would be harsh to claim he is in trouble at this point.

16 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S5/10.jpg

Nothing much happens up to the final climb with 3 km left. The peloton was reduced to 61 riders but no top 20 rider was dropped.

This is the positioning with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Mudarra leading.

In first row: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png De Bie, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi

In 2nd row: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Barbero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Ginanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Kelderman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Van Garderen

In 3rd row: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Bovenhuis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Landa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Lietaer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Mohoric, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Trofimov

In 4th row: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Boaro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Boswell, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Zakarin

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Kwiatkowski alone behind those.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S5/11.jpg

With a little less than 2 km pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen attacks, but he can’t get rid of the others, which results in a counter attack from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants,

Behind Hagen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Van Garderen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi and at his left side pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Kelderman, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png De Bie, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Ginanni in that order.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S5/12.jpg

First under the red kite it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants with the next 10 riders in exactly the same order as mentioned above, except that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png De Bie has lost position to both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Bobridge.

Behind De Bie, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Kwiatkowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Beltran have both passed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Ginanni, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Trofimov and finally pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Mohoric.

Behind those a gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S5/13.jpg

400 meters left, now over the top and on a downhill sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants leads but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen now closer and not far down to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Van Garderen either.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S5/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen wins in Torricella in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Van Garderen 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants 3rd, being both Van Garderen’s and Bakelants’s 2nd podium of the tour.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S5/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Claeys 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi 6th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Bobridge 7th

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S5/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png De Bie 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Trofimov 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Kelderman round of top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S5/17.jpg

This was Edvald Boasson Hagen 2nd stage win in Tirreno-Adriatico after also winning stage 5 back in 2016.

Without any time difference between the first 15 rider today, only losing a few bonus seconds Simone Ponzi keeps the lead with 41” down to Tejay Van Garderen with Jan Bakelants third in the same time as Tejay.

Simone Ponzi still lead the points and also Adam Phelan keep the KoM lead, although they both saw competitors getting closer.

Hugo Boss holds the team lead and Matej Mohoric the youth jersey.
