Another flat-rated stage, but this time, it clearly favours the punchy sprinters like Van der Lijke or Houle. Groenewegen is the race leader, and he has a chance to retain the lead if he arrives in the winner’s group given his advantage in GC over the rest of sprinters. Today we’ll also see the first KoM leader, as until now we didn’t have a single KoM in the first two stages, so we can expect a big battle to join the breakaway
The stage starts very hectic, with several attempts of breakaways, and mostly the same riders trying it, like Calmejane, Janse van Rensburg, Roman, Howson, Cavagna, Paillot, Budenieks or Bernaudeau. But the only rider that gets away from the bunch is Bester, though his gap is constantly changing due other riders attacking from the bunch and being chase down
In the first slopes of the first climb of the day, Danacik and Calmejane join Bester in the breakaway. Other riders tried too after them, but Bennelong riders seems too focused on not allowing big breakaways
Bester beats his two companions in the Cat.2 KoM sprint, after a smarter approach to the sprint. The gap in the top of this climb rises to 5 minutes with just over 100 kms to go
Cat. 2 KoM
Bester 10 Calmejane 8 Danacik 6 Hofstetter 4 Orue 2
But in the next KoM sprint, Bester falls in the trap of starting the sprint in the first place and can only be third, with Calmejane taking the big points. Even worse for Bester is that he repeated the same in the following climb, so Calmejane had secured the KoM lead by the end of the day
Cat.3 KoM
Calmejane 6 Danacik 4 Bester 2
Cat.3 KoM
Calmejane 6 Danacik 4 Bester 2
40 kms left in the stage, and Bennelong is basically the only team that has worked in the chase, thus reducing the breakaway’s gap to just 2’30 now. I guess they are working for the sprint of Leigh Howard, and that’s a lot of confidence that the Australian will survive the bumpy final kms before the sprint. In the breakaway, Bester is completely exhausted, but he hasn’t been totally dropped yet
Danacik beats Calmejane in the final KoM sprint, but anyway the French rider will be the first KoM leader of the race, with a 4-point gap to Danacik, while Bester has finally been dropped of the leading group
Cat.3 KoM
Danacik 6 Calmejane 4 Bester 2
Inside the final 10 kms, and Calmejane and Danacik are still fighting to keep their options alive, though the 15-second gap doesn’t look very promising. Desigual and Aegon have taken control of the sprint preparations
Aegon has won again the battle of the leadouts, and just before the corner where the uphill zone start with 3 kms to go, they still have 2 riders to leadout the sprint for Groenewegen, who is comfortably sitting on third place in the group, behind Olivier and Bauhaus. Howard and Van der Lijke seems to be gaining places by the inside of the corner, while both Desigual sprinters, Maksimov and Zabel are fighting for the wheel of Groenewegen, instead of working for the other. In that line, Castañeda, Houle, Enger and Bertilsson are trying to benefit from Aegon’s work to get a good result
Impressive effort by Olivier, who with 1,5 kms left is still leading the group. Is yet to see if this pace affects some of the less punchy sprinters. It looks like Maksimov is trying to launch his sprint from long distance, while Zabel stays on Groenewegen’s wheel
Under the Flamme Rouge Howard is sprinting and powering away from everyone else. The only rivals for the win are Van der Lijke and Groenewegen, and will see how the corner with 600 metres to go affects the sprint. Maksimov has exploded in the right side, while Zabel tries to follow the slipstream of the Russian. Castañeda and Page are doing surprinsignly well, fighting for a Top5 place
The riders are now in the corner with 600 metres to go, and Van der Lijke is starting to close the gap to Howard. Behind this three riders, Zabel has a little advantage for the 4th place, while Enger is making a great comeback to fight for a good result after a not so good positioning in the sprint
250 metres left and Howard starts to fade a little, which makes Van der Lijke to be next to the Australian, almost in paralel, while Groenewegen awaits for both riders to fade to gain places
Only 100 metres to go and Van der Lijke is finally on the lead. The Dutch rider is going to take the win today unless suddenly he stops sprinting, while Howard’s second place could be in risk with Groenewegen still sprinting strong
And the win in Aix-en-Provence is for Nick van der Lijke! Finally his training has paid off and the Dutch gets a fantastic win in Paris-Nice
Groenewegen overtakes Howard in the final metres to take second place and retain his GC lead one more day
Zabel gets fourth place ahead of Houle, who finished really strong the sprint, but bad positioning cost him badly. Bertilsson is sixth, while Castañeda, Enger, Silvestre and Porsev complete the Top10 of the stage
Great win for Vesuvio today, which after this will change their focus onto Andy Schleck and his quest for a GC win. Other GC teams will be glad to know that no one lost time today, so everyone except Lachlan Morton will reach the key stages without big time losses
