10 stages were needed in this race to have the first important stage for the GC riders. Actually from now, all days will be important for the GC, with the exception of S15, the only chance remaining for the sprinters in this race.
Today we have a 55-km timetrial between Zahora and Cadiz, the same city that hosted yesterday’s finish, where Leigh Howard won with the Red Jersey, that he’ll be wearing today for the last time. We can only see one rider winning the stage and also becoming the new GC leader, the American Taylor Phinney, who is the best timetrialist in this field by far. Not that he minds a strong startlist to win TT races... Other GC riders like Tenorio, Kritskiy, Cattaneo, Uran or even Spanish favourites like Madrazo, Intxausti or Abal will be looking to have a strong result today, getting a good gap over the rest of climbers, specially over someone like Alarcon, the 2014 winner, who might be the strongest in the mountain later
Van Winden was one of the first riders to start, and being the best pure TT rider, he’s obviously setting a good benchmark time of 1h15’55. Only a couple of riders like Canty or Meyer could finish within 2 minutes of the Dutch’s time, as Dempster, another great pure TT rider, had an awful day
Riders like Ludvigsson, Heymes or Lindren did decent times, but still more than 2 minutes slower than Van Winden, so we had to wait for a while until someone beated his time, with the Canadian champion Cataford setting the fastest time with a 12-second margin.
A rider that could be considered Festina’s GC leader like Chamorro, though he had already lost 4 minutes in a flat stage, has lost over 6 minutes to Cataford
Not everything is perfect for Bennelong in this race, despite Howard’s two stage wins and several days in the GC and Points lead, as if you remember, their GC leader Jack Haig lost 4 minutes in S7, and today the young Australian has only been able to do a time 1’20 slower than Cataford’s. Also Herrada set the fourth best time, within two minutes of Cataford
Little by little we are starting to see the GC riders to take off in this stage, with now only 80 riders left to start and all of them 1’40 behind race leader (but only 8 seconds behind best GC rider in Herklotz)
Meanwhile, Brown put another great TT performance for RBC, with the fourth best time so far, 1’30 behind his team-mate.
Riders like Vinhas or Carapaz lost 6 and 5 minutes, though both ride in support of better riders, so it’s not important how much time they lose. Maybe even it’s better for them as it might allow them to be in breakaways
Decent TT for Quintana, who only loses 3 minutes to Cataford
Faiers doesn’t do an impressive time, but it’s one of the best for the GC riders so far, 2’20 behind Cataford
Some riders that might hope for a Top20 like Karnulin (5’17), Nerz (3’20) and Arndt (8’22) finish right before the first GC rider to do a great time, like Keinath. And with great time we understand it compared to similar riders, as he puts the fifth best time, 1’34 worse than Cataford. But it’s only 15 seconds slower than Haig, who is a better timetrialist
Horrible day for Eastman, losing almost 3 minutes to Cataford. At least the American isn’t fighting for any points in this race...
... as Abal does, because the Spanish rider also has a bad day, and loses 2’30, and 1 minute to Keinath
Marquez loses 4 minutes, but he can’t really complain to be honest
Uran sets the third best time in the finish, 44 seconds behind Cataford, but probably the Colombian had hoped for a better day to really use his timetrialing skills
It’s highly unlikely that Goos will be a factor in the GC fight, having to ride in support of Keinath, and not being close to the best climbers, but he’s a very decent timetrialist that has done the sixth best time so far, losing less than 1’30 to Cataford
Really bad day for Cattaneo, who is not even in the provisional Top10 of the stage, after losing 2’10 to Cataford. If the Italian can’t use in his favour the long timetrial, it’s going to be a hard race for him
Olivier loses around 5 minutes, maybe a bit more than he would have liked, but he’s not a good timetrialist
Very good ride by Schelling, with basically the same time as one of the stage favourites like Cattaneo
Galta and Van der Hugenhaben lose 3 and 4 minutes each one
And there comes the big favourite, the American champion Taylor Phinney. There was never a doubt that he would win this stage, and obviously when he crosses the line, he sets the fastest time by almost 1’30 over his team-mate. A really strong performance that will be rewarded with a stage win and the GC lead
Tenorio probably hoped to not lose so much time to Phinney, as 1’45 is going to be hard to be gained in the mountains (and there’s still another TT left), but setting the fourth best time is okay
Alarcon knew that his hopes of winning his second Vuelta could be thrown in the trash in this stage, and losing 7 minutes to Phinney doesn’t help a lot
Not the best day for last year Tour of America winner Barguil, as he loses 6 minutes to Phinney
There was only one rider that realistic could avoid a RBC 1-2 in the stage, the Russian Kritsky. And he did it with a great ride, though still losing 1’07 to Phinney
Intxausti can only finish within 3 minutes of Phinney’s time, way worse than the Spanish would have wanted before the stage. Still he’s inside the stage Top10
5 years have passed since Madrazo won his last GT, and 6 since his Vuelta win, and with rides like today’s it’s not clear that he’ll be winning this time either, as he loses over 2’30 to Phinney
Martin with a 5-minute loss, that might be a bit excesive for his TT quality, but tomorrow he has a good chance for a stage win
And the last GC rider to finish is the young German prodigy Herklotz, who took 8 bonus seconds in Gibraltar’s stage, but can’t avoid a 4-minute loss today, which make those seconds kinda irrelevant now
Obviously, the race leader Howard was the final rider to do his timetrial, and as expected, he lost more than 6 minutes.
All of this means that Taylor Phinney has won the TT in Cadiz, and is the new race leader!
Phinney now leads the race ahead of Kritskiy (1’07), Tenorio (1’45), Uran (2’11) and Madrazo (2’35).
