Fourth stage in Switzerland and it’s a hilly-rated stage. Not the hardest one though, so we could a reduced bunch sprint in the finish of Huttwill. Maybe we’ll see some attack from the GC riders that have already lost some time between the first mountain stage and the TTT. Andy Schleck is the race leader, as he won S2 and his team managed to keep their losses short enough to keep the Giro d’Italia winner in the race lead, just 1 second ahead of Andrey Amador
8 riders got in the breakaway
Prado
Kanerva
Howson
Kamyshev
Brandao
Bovenhuis
Geniez
Vorobev
Kanerva would take the points in the first climb of the day, beating Bovenhuis and Brandao for it
Kanerva would beat Brandao in the Cat.3 climb placed around 40 kms from the finish line
With 25 kms left, the race goes through the finish line for the first time, and Puma is controlling the pace in the bunch, which is 1’20 behind the six remaining breakaway riders, all from the original breakaway except Kamyshev and Vorobev
Herklotz and Amador are on the move in the Rupiswill climb! They saw race leader Schleck struggling a bit to follow the pace, and neither of them hesitated to make an attack
But both Dombrowski and Schleck have managed to bridge the gap to the attackers, and with 10 kms to go, they are starting to catch the remains of the breakaway, while also having opened a gap to the bunch
Herklotz back at it! The favourites group was about to catch the leading group, but Herklotz wanted to make that jump alone and attacks with 8 kms to go!
Everything back together except for one rider, Silvio Herklotz, who is absolutely flying towards a stage win today! His gap is about 25 seconds with 6 kms to go
Well, it didn’t stay together for long, as McCarthy would attack, and bring some of the earlier attackers, like Dombrowski, Amador, breakaway guys as Kanerva and Brandao, and new attacker Hirt with him, but the biggest news are that Schleck is heavily struggling, having been dropped of that group and could end up losing big time today!
McCarthy going into beast mode, trying to cut the gap to Herklotz in the only 3 kms remaining, but it’s still around 25-30 seconds. Though the Aussie has managed to crack every other rider that trying to follow him, the last one Dombrowski
Herklotz enters the final km with a comfortably lead, about 20 seconds over McCarthy, who has 25 further on Dombrowski (and another 25 further to the bunch)
Silvio Herklotz wins in Huttwil the fourth stage of 2018 Tour de Suisse after a fantastic aggresive strategy. Can this be enough to get into the race lead?
McCarthy has to settle for second, as his move was a bit too late, despite showing probably more pure strenght that Herklotz in the closing kms
Somehow Kangert manages to win the sprint of the bunch, well, it looked like he attacked before the final km and end up overtaking Dombrowski, who finishes fourth the stage
Mansilla takes fifth place for Evonik, ahead of Boom, Guldhammer, Paulinho, Meintjes and Gilett. They would all be given the same time as Kangert, who was 59 seconds behind stage winner...
And the new race leader is Silvio Herklotz! Big time gain today after his bad day in the first mountain stage, and the extra time loss in the TTT, which puts him 10 seconds ahead of Andy Schleck and 11 ahead of Andrey Amador! Who is going to stop the Vuelta winner now?
