Praha - Karlovy Vary - Praha - Stage 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Praha/Praha-2-000.png

Second stage of the race and we have the only proper flat stage for sprinters, given that the final one is the route of the former classic that had the name of the race, and pure sprinters will struggle there. Yesterday, Yannick Stoltz won the prologue ahead of Adrian Malori and Yoann Paillot, with the big favourites Fiedler and Phinney affected by the lesser amount of wind during their races.

For the win today, we have riders like Van Stayen, Groenewegen, Ahlstrand, Kristoff, Kennaugh, Avelino, Guerao or Howard. A good sprinting depth here, though the very top sprinters aren’t attending this race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Trillini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Daniel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Reguigui are the three in today’s breakaway. Reguigui is within range of getting the race lead if he wins all three intermediate sprints and then stays in the bunch, but he’s the worst sprinter here by a lot of margin. Trillini could get dangerously close to the race lead though

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Praha/Praha-2-001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Daniel wins the first sprint, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Trillini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Reguigui

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Praha/Praha-2-002.jpg

We get the same result in the next sprint, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Daniel winning again

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Praha/Praha-2-003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Yatsevich suffers a puncture with 80 kms to go. He shouldn’t have much troubles getting back in the bunch, but his team is focused now around Malori, so he’s alone on this

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Praha/Praha-2-004.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Daniel wins the final sprint of the day, taking all of them, and with it, 18 points for the Points classification. All three sprints had the same result, with Daniel ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Trillini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Reguigui. Their gap with 60 kms to go is just 3 kms, while Yatsevich is back in the bunch

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Praha/Praha-2-005.jpg

Have the sprinter teams miscalculated the chase? Because with 10 kms to go the three riders in front still have a 1’20 gap. If one of them has a great day and can attack, the bunch might have lost their chance to win today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Praha/Praha-2-006.jpg

7 kms to go and the gap is now 1 minute. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Daniel is keeping breakaway’s hopes alive against Volvo’s power, but it’s hard to know if he can do that until the finish line

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Praha/Praha-2-007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Daniel attacks with 4 kms to go. He still has a 50-second gap, and with favourable terrain with slight downhill, he might pull it off

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Praha/Praha-2-008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Trillini is trying to catch the French rider, sprinting from very long distance, seeing he has a life-time chance of getting a PT win. The bunch isn’t going to catch these riders, that’s for sure

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Praha/Praha-2-009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Daniel goes under the red kit with a 25-second gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Trillini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Reguigui, who couldn’t hang on his wheel, and 20 further to the bunch, where they are preparing a fight for the fourth place, or maybe second place. But the Festina rider is going to win today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Praha/Praha-2-010.jpg

You cannot argue that this sprint is all but organised. Very messy sprint, with Volvo and Hugo Boss in the first places, and a lot of sprinters around them

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Praha/Praha-2-011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Avermaet has given pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen a massive leadout, and both are leading the sprint for the second place, once pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Trillini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Reguigui were caught. Daniel’s gap is being quickly reduced, but he won’t be stopped from getting this win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ahlstrand and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Havik seem to be the only challengers to Van Stayen for that second place in the stage, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Stoltz being also involved in the sprint

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Praha/Praha-2-012.jpg

He runned out of energies in the end, so he couldn’t even celebrate this great win, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Maxime Daniel wins the stage in Karlovy Vary!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Praha/Praha-2-013.jpg

Van Stayen wins the sprint for the second place, ahead of Kennaugh, Ahlstrand and Zabel. Enger, Havik and Howard get the final scoring places, with Guerao and Avelino closing the Top10 of the stage

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Praha/Praha-2-014.jpg

Despite having a clear gap at the moment of crossing the line, the final burst of the sprint, closed the gap enough so the race jury decided to not conceed any time gaps, which is a game-changer in terms of who is the race leader. Because with no gaps, Yannick Stoltz retains his Yellow Jersey ahead of the 60-km TT, and Maxime Daniel is now second in GC, with the same time as Stoltz, but losing the lead due to the tenths in the prologue. At least Daniel now leads comfortably the Points standings, a classification that he could have just won
