Vuelta a España - Stage 1

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-01-000.jpg

Welcome to the coverage of 2018 Vuelta a España! It’s the 73rd edition of the biggest race in Spain, historically dominated by Spanish riders. The race starts this year from Leon, in a stage of almost 200 kms that will take the riders to the city of Salamanca. With this year’s weird route, this is the first of 9 consecutive flat stages, so the sprinters will have quite some fun in the following days. The second part of the race is almost all mountains though.

The stage is almost totally flat, without any KoMs, so the KoM jersey won’t be awarded today. The favourites for the win, as in every flat stage in this race, will be Ben Swift and Bryan Coquard, two of the best sprinters in the world. Swift has previously won 3 stages in the race, between 2014 and 2015, while Coquard has never won a GT stage

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-01-001.jpg

And we are live in Leon! And the riders don’t take long time before the first attacks

First man into the attacks is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Peeter Tarvis, the rider of EA Vesuvio. He’s followed by Hivert and Gjolberg, but these riders wouldn’t stay long ahead of the group

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-01-002.jpg

Roman, Lammertink and Marcos managed to open a gap to the bunch, where Bennelong, Festina and Aegon were controlling the race so far

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-01-003.jpg

Riders like Tarvis, De Vresse, Bol, Veyhe or Maccagli were very active trying to join the leading trio, but obviously the sprinter’s team didn’t allow them to escape too. Anyway, everyone was reeled in later on, and the attacks began again

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-01-004.jpg

It took more than 50 kms of stage, but we finally can say we have a breakaway! Four riders that most of them had been involved in previous attacks

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hivert
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Lammertink
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Marcos
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Groselj

Important warning! The wind speed is rising a lot, and with the route today basically being a straight line, riders will have to face lateral-head winds of 30 km/h all day!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-01-005.jpg

In the first intermediate sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Groselj won it as it was to be expected, being the best sprinter of the group. Marcos and Lammertink took the other bonus seconds

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Marcos 4
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Lammertink 2

With 120 kms to go their gap was just over 5 minutes, with Desigual, Tinkoff and Gazelle helping a bit in the chase to the sprinter teams

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-01-006.jpg

The second and final intermediate sprint of the day was in the city of Zamora, and there pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Lammertink took the 6 bonus seconds, as Groselj struggled to replicate his earlier sprint, and was beaten too by Hivert. So both Lammertink and Groselj have won 8 seconds, while Marcos and Hivert gained four. If they manage to finish in the bunch they all be placed 4th to 7th in GC after the stage

Only 10 kms to finish the first stage of La Vuelta, and the breakaway’s gap has been reduced to 50 seconds. The bunch looks in control with mainly Festina and Bennelong working in the latest kms to reduce the gap

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-01-008.jpg

And the breakaway is over with 7 kms to go! Festina’s work paid off as they avoided the classic mistake of letting too much leeway to the breakaway, catching it in the final 2-4 kms and then have a chaotic sprint because of that

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-01-009.jpg

Festina and Aegon are dominating the first places of the peloton heading into the final 5 kms. The sprint trains are yet to be formed though

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-01-010.jpg

And here they are, the sprint trains of Festina and Aegon! Four riders each. Festina has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Van der Hugenhaben first, and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Santos with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard at the end of the train, while Aegon has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Olivier in front, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift in second place ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Bauhaus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Sbaragli! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Kupfernagel is following Aegon’s train, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh is trying to avoid a dropped Festina rider to get in their train. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Maksimov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard are there too

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-01-011.jpg

Just under 2 kms to go, and Aegon hasn’t fully corrected their train yet. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Bauhaus is in first place now, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Sbaragli is trying to go around pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift’s right side to give him a fresh lead-out. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen are following his train, with Kennaugh having lost the wheel of both sprint trains up there. Wait, the first Air France rider is actually pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Clarke, with Kennaugh a few metres behind the Aussie. Not looking good for the French rider then

Meanwhile, Festina’s looks to be working fine, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Santos looks ready to take over from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bar the lead of the train, being the final lead-out rider for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard, who has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Kupfernagel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel on his wheel

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-01-012.jpg

Under the “Green Kit” the sprint looks chaotics due to being in slight downhill. Two Aegon riders lead the sprint, but neither of them are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift, who is launching his sprint close to the right fences, completely blocking pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger’s progression. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard hasn’t still started his sprint in the left side, though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard is storming through his right side. And watch out with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Stallaert’s progression, though he could be blocked by Swift or Enger

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-01-013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard is in the front with only half a km to go. He doesn’t look to be fading anytime soon, though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard haven’t give up yet, while currently fighting for the second place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Kupfernagel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel are a bit behind... but who is that pink bullet in the left side?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-01-014.jpg

Amazingly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Soupe is challenging for the win today! Both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger and him are going faster than anyone else now, which means that both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift are missing on the podium and bonus seconds today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard is still holding a little gap that gets reduced every single metre...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-01-015.jpg

And it’s a win and the Red Jersey for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Leigh Howard! The Australian rider finished off the fantastic job his team did today and becomes the first leader of this edition of La Vuelta.

Enger was so close to repeat his win from two years ago... but he has to settle for a fantastic second place, while Coquard gets the final bonus seconds and the third place after Soupe faded in the final 50 metres

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-01-016.jpg

Swift won’t be satisfied with only a fourth place today, while Clarke and Soupe get two amazing results with a 5th and a 6th despite not being between the favourites pre-stage. The Top10 is completed by Kennaugh, Zabel, Kupfernagel and Stallaert

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-01-017.jpg

First ever stage win in La Vuelta for Leigh Howard, who completes his set of wins in all 3 GTs. He also leads a GT by the first time in his career!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-01-018.jpg

5 minutes later arrives a group with some riders that could challenge for a GC Top30, like Bartl, Ludvigsson or Vysna, and also a rider that could have fought to be in the Red Jersey after the first TT like Van Winden
