Paris - Nice - Stage 2
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-000.jpg

First flat stage of the race, though it’s not exactly flat in the final kms, so while the fastest riders here are Howard and Groenewegen, someone like Van der Lijke could use his better climbing skills to outperform better sprinters, same happening with a rider like Hugo Houle

Three riders decided to go onto the attack. All three of them are within range of reaching the Yellow Jersey thanks to the intermediate sprint bonus seconds, though the 20 seconds for the stage winner will prevent those riders from getting a surprise race leadership.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Korsaeth wins the first intermediate sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_red.png Cruz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Turek, which puts him only 2 seconds behind Leung in GC. Meanwhile, the gap to the bunch has rised to 6 minutes with 160 kms to go

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-002.jpg

In the second intermediate sprint pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Korsaeth wins again, with the same order between the 3 riders, which gives the Grieg rider the provisional lead in GC, given that he finishes the stage in the bunch. Groenewegen can still take the race lead if he wins the stage, but probably the main favourite, Van der Lijke is now out of range to take the GC lead even with a stage win later

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-003.jpg

This is akward, as it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Andy Schleck, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Lachlan Morton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Daan Olivier the ones pulling from the bunch trying to reduce the gap to the breakaway with 40 kms left in the stage. I don’t think neither teams have run out of domestiques to work, and the gap is stable at 30 seconds since a few kms ago

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Korsaeth feels like he still has something in the tank and drops the other two riders of the breakaway with 20 kms to the finish, trying to stay in the front as long as possible, though his gap isn’t higher than 40 seconds in this moment

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-005.jpg

But his lonely adventure doesn’t go too far, as he’s caught with 16 kms to go, and seeing how tired he looks, he might not end the stage in the main group, thus losing the chance of becoming the new race leader

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-006.jpg

Only 8 kms left, and now Aegon and Vesuvio completely dominates the bunch. Vesuvio has all their 7 riders between the first 12-15 places, while Aegon has another 6 riders

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-007.jpg

The high pace is that uphill section before the final 4 kms, has provoked a split in the bunch, with around 70 riders in the first group, and in the second group, a lot of the timetrialist that did well yesterday, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Ciccone, the U25 leader.

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Lachlan Morton is also in the second group!!!!! Disaster for the Bennelong leader, who might lose quite some time in the first proper stage of the race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-008.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-009.jpg

Meanwhile, in the front of the race, Vesuvio and Aegon keep fighting for the best leadout to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke with only 3 kms to go

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-010.jpg

A little less than 2 kms to go, and Aegon seems to have won the battle against Vesuvio for the best leadout, but watch out the race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Leung, who seems to be starting his sprint very early, looking to surprise the big sprinters and retain his GC lead

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-011.jpg

Very messy sprint with several Vesuvio riders still in the first places with 750 metres left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen has already taken the lead of the sprint, but he has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke well placed on his wheel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Houle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard trying to overtake him in his left wing, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger by the right wing

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-012.jpg

Only 300 metres for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen, who doesn’t seem to be fading anytime soon, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Houle keep fighting to challenge the Dutch, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke looks to not have a great day, as he looks to be going backwards in the sprint, instead of closing the gap to the leaders

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-013.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Dylan Groenewegen takes the win in Cerilly, and also becomes the new race leader!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-014.jpg

Howard holds up the opposition to take a second place, while Van der Lijke beats to the line Enger for the final podium spot. Houle takes fifth ahead of Silvestre, while Porsev, Soupe, Bertilsson and Van Poppel close the Top10

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-015.jpg

Around a minute after Groenewegen, a group which includes a few interesting riders like Nerz, Fraile, Vasyliv or Lutsenko reaches the finish line. But a couple of riders falling in the middle of the main group and this group could null the gaps for these riders. We’ll see if Morton’s group can benefit from something similar

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-016.jpg

Morton’s group arrives 2’30 after the first group, led by Bayly, a team-mate of Morton. And with no riders close behind them to null gaps, this group is screwed. In this group it’s also Chamorro, but apart from loads of domestiques and some depth riders, there’s no one important for the GC apart from Morton losing time today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-017.jpg

Big day for Dylan Groenewegen, who apart from getting a stage win in a PT race, takes over both race leader and U25 lead, while also being tied for the lead in Points jersey

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Nice/PN-02-018.jpg

No crashes this season, but Lachlan Morton always finds a way to screw his options in one-week races. His manager tsmoha surely will hope that from now he doesn’t stop trying to attack in every opportunity to try to make up the time lost today, because Morton basically will start the race with a deficit of 2’40 to the main favourites as Amador, Schleck, Gesink or Taaramae now
